I was sceptical at first, but when NBA & NCAA cancelled all their games, it cost them MILLIONS of $$$. They wouldn't do that unless they had some real knowledge, certainly not as part of some conspiracy by liberals. They're in it for the $$$, right?

I dunno. Maybe it would be best to leave all the political BS on this thread only, so that all parties can have their hissing matches here and leave all that crap off of other threads?  Just a thought. We now return to your regularly scheduled cat fight.

No problem.  Sorry for the confusion.  Stay safe!!!!

Thanks.  I'm retired and coming off our Minnesota winter where I spent a couple months cooped up only going out a couple times a week.  This stay in place order hasn't required much in the way of lifestyle changes.  I was already about as close to being a recluse as I could get.

I hate to be that guy, but no you didn't. While they traced back the first case to sometime in mid-November, it wasn't until late December around the holidays when China started discovering an outbreak of a pneumonia type disease (Dec 31 is when they confirmed to the World Health Organization) And it was early January when it was discovered to be a novel coronavirus. So unless you were boots on the ground in a Wuhan hospital in December, you were not calling attention to it until January at the earliest

Hmm. I was thinking the same thing as you. Not possible. But I am sure there will be a perfectly spun explanation coming.

Not trying to bash either one of you but

Actually, you are both incorrect.  I remember walking down the hall at work and we have a 60 inch flatscreen TV at the end of the hall with world news updates.  The headline read something to the effect that "China had discovered a novel virus with dozens of confirmed infections.  Infected have been isolated"   (maybe even something about discovering at an airport?)

I cannot give you the exact timeline, but I knew of this in early to mid-December as we were off campus by December 13th and did not return until jan 8th.  By January 8th, it was already spreading in China.  I remember saying to myself when I read it "well, here we go again" as I thought we had another SARS or MERS on our hands.

It wasn't in November that it was announced.  However, it was a blip on the radar in early to mid-December.

I can't find any source of a report in early December. One of the first people to get treated originally got checked out on 12/10 and wasnt admitted to the hospital until 12/16 https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.ibtimes.sg/how-did-wei-guixian-probable-coronavirus-patient-zero-contract-deadly-illness-41882

It was 12/21 when the Chinese CDC recognized a cluster of pneumonia cases of known origin. http://weekly.chinacdc.cn/en/article/id/a3907201-f64f-4154-a19e-4253b453d10c

It was 12/30 when the whistleblower doctors sent out their warnings which is when any attention and news was brought to the virus. https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)30382-2/fulltext

"America was asleep???"   What a dumbass blame America first statement.  America was no more asleep than the rest of the intelligent part of the world.   Always the first thing that comes out of the mouth of some of those living in their mother's basements sitting at a computer.   Politicians on either side of the aisle don't say that crap and they say a lot of crap.

The US absolutely dropped the ball in the early stages of this. The early travel ban from China was a good start but then we completely screwed up. The testing capacity we have now we should've had at least 3 weeks ago, the CDC completely bungled that and it put the US so far behind where we could be right now. The response the last 2 weeks has been fine

I agree the U.S dropped the ball but I am not sure I will say the CDC bungled as far as testing capacity. Yes testing capacity was bungled but I don't know if that is on the CDC due to them not having the resources and funding in order to do so. In past situations such as H1NI, SARS, Swine Flue, etc the U.S would send the Pandemic Response team to investigate the disease and help with providing plans to help the U.S to fight whatever said disease was. In 2018 that team was cut & is no longer in existance. It was part of the spending plan that the politicans approved at that time so I am not going to point the finger at any said Politican name, whether I hated them prior or during or like them, it was part of the spending plan. Along with that the CDC funding was cut to where they could no longer help other countries fight infectious diseases in 39 of 49 countires. One of the countries the countires abondoned in this funding cut? China. I do not feel that the CDC had the resources, ability to get the knowledge, or funding to get the testing capacity. It was almost like seeing the disease for the first time when it should have been seen months prior. Almost like a med school student having to treat their first trauma victim. A lot of the Governors including the one here in Ohio to whom I did not vote for are at least doing a good job of trying to react as good as possible

The CDC absolutely screwed up, they put out faulty test kits and did not allow states and private labs from creating their own test kits (until 2/29). These 2 things put the US a month behind where it could have been.

I swear to you I saw a quick headline on the screen about this.  It was not related to pneumonia----rather an unidentified virus that had sickened a small cluster of people----and I thought they said something about an airport?  It was weird though, because it was out of the headlines then for quite a while-----a week or two?

Correct they screwed up because of the rush job that they had to do in order to get the tests created. The FDA is the one that would not allow state and private labs to create tests which had to be lifted after the problem with the kits were discovered. It usually a normal part of regulatory approval to ensure safety.

The problem with the kits had to do with the PCR which is a very delicate thing to process and should not be rushed. Even the smallest micro contaminents can ruin the PCR which is what happened in this case. It gave a negative control which that detected the wrong genome and raised a false positive.

Multiple other institutions have said that something like this out of the CDC is very uncommon. One scientist said it is unheard of for this to happen them. Given the nature of the situation, it should not have been put only on their plate and have them do several months worth of work in a matter of weeks with no collaboration. Had the funding not been cut in 2018, I doubt this problem happens with the test. Had a team or personnel been able to work with other countries, they would have been ahead of this and the timeline would have looked a lot different. Instead we were told we had nothing to worry about

Just saw a short public announcement by the surgeon general of Israel.  Basically saying one of the biggest problems in the world is grandparents hugging their grandkids and vice versa.  Saying that should be stopped until this virus thing is over.  Imagine an American politician of any party having the balls to say something sort of "anti-family" like that.

As Doug Auld has said more than once in his monthly editorial in Sprint Car and Midget magazine (formerly his magazine, he sold it to Turn 3 Media a few months ago {suppose I should nail down the exact number of days since he owned the mag---don't want to offend the experts on this forum}), "too many azzholes on social media".  Think egras qualifies.

No he doesn't. Just because he doesn't agree with your opinion, doesn't make him an asshole.

Not being an asshole and not giving my opinion.  Stating fact.  Every single politician in America has been saying to stay away from the elderly.  Don't touch or hug grandma or grandpa.  You said they wouldn't dare say this.  They have been saying this.  Not an opinion.  FACT
