waterpark, campground, fairs and carnivals? you f--ckers smoking crack or what? Trust me it would never work. The only other event that could make money is Monster Jam. Been to a couple and they get huge crowds. WoO, Allstar and IRA would be good draws. Husets has always done good with WoO shows. Hopefully someone with money buys it and would be happy to break even. The diehard fans will be back, hard to say about the casual fan. If they have a organized, fast moving show with no BS the fans will support. Start at 7 and be done by 10 and Sunday nights..   Maybe 4 or 5 410's show with Jackson and a point fund?

I appreciate some of the ideas on here but not sure some of them are even realistic. Even if someone gets it for 3.5 mil, they will have a hard time making that money up on weekly racing. Murphy took a stab at the numbers and even if he is remotely close, they will not make that on just weekly racing. So to think someone is going to buy it and then invest even more money into a campground or other amenities seems crazy to me. Someone mentioned building a waterpark. I agree that that would attract people out there but 1)waterparks are crazy expensive to maintain 2) building a waterpark next to a dirt track seems like a really bad idea. I can't even imagine the struggle to try and keep it clean.

I was never a big Chuck fan but I will give him props for investing in the track. I just pray someone can afford to buy it and get back to weekly racing. I also agree that people will not just come back cuz the doors open. Humans are often creatures of habit and they have given them 2 years to find new hobbies. It is going to be a tough gig any way you look at it.

2) Good point. A water park....next to a dirt track....hmmm..... I can remember being at a mud wrestling event... :0

Fair enough. I was just curious. The only thing I know for sure is that it wasn't me.

I can assure you it wasn't me either!

You forgot renaissance festival. I wonder how many knights we can expect for next week's WoJ (World of Jousting) event? I guess it  depends on where the ASoJ are it next week? Maybe some of the IJA guys will show up? I know Jackson and Knoxville aren't jousting that night, so I'm anticipated a good knight turnout. Heck, maybe some of the PA guys will leave the castle? wink

Now I have to go find out what a monster jam is.

Whats the seaon? Mid-May through August? Sparser market 2k to 4k per night, or less?

I know nothing about the deal. Does a bank own it? Can you take over payments?

Sounds like the last owner make improvements, did that not help attendance?

The comparison to Eldora was about price and the number of big special events at each track that would give them an advantage in repaying a large loan.  I'm not comparing the track or the racing.

I never said anything about the track or the racing either? I am a little confused I guess at your statement. I am just asking what would Eldora go for today do to continued inflation. Not to mention now, as you also stated, Eldora now has a good amount of large events throughout the year. My main point is that I think if Eldora sold today it would be well over the 3.5 million it sold for some time ago. 5 Million? 7-8? IDK Maybe I am way off on thinking that? I think comparing the 3.5 it went for to Badlands isn't completely fair to Husets. I think the place it probably worth 3 or so million because like I said in my last post you couldn't build Husets from scratch and have half of what they have for 3 million. It is going to take the right person and I hope they get that person.

      Probably old news, but...

I received a flyer in my e-mail for the auction of Badlands Speedway in September 15th. The only reason I can think of for it to show up in my mailbox is that they sent out information about advertising/ sponsorship  opportunities flyers to darned near every company they could find an e-mail address for back when they were getting ready to open.

I think it's common knowledge now that the minimum bid is set at $3,150,000. The flyer also has a box to markfor "pre-auction offer"  (buy it now?)

So, over & under: I think the place will sell. I don't think it will sell for $10,000,000 or it would have already. What do you think the end auction price will be?

My guess is $3,150,000.01. What's your over & under guess?

I have no idea Why but I got the same e-mail I'm Thinking it will sell for the minimum bid or maybe up to 4 million and I have a pretty good idea who the person bidding will be I hope it works out   Glen Murra

At $3.1 million how long does it take for the place to pay for itself? Inside of fifteen years?

If you were paying interest on the money you'd never get out of the hole you dug yourself into by signing the note.

At 5% you'd be paying $155,000 of interest the first year.    With 20ish nights of weekly racing you'd have $7500 interest payment per night.

With a $15 admission price the first 500 tickets sold every week would go to paying the interest.

Without a big downpayment or outside income I doubt you'd even be able to pay the interest, nevermind pay down principal.

I'll repeat again slowly.  My reference to Eldora was totally in regard to the big E coming as a turnkey complete with established big special events that no doubt gave an advantage in replying a multi million dollar loan.  I wasn't comparing anything else other than their advantage in generating income with their specials and both coming with a large price tag.

The on site camping goes hand in hand with big events as well.  What makes the Knoxville Nationals the Knoxville Nationals?  Certainly the racing but there's something to be said for walking the grounds after the races going to after parties and Dingus' and not have to drive to a Newton motel.

Speaking of camping experiences one of my fond memories was renting a motorhome with some friends and driving all night to the Eldora Million.  We got there exhausted at 6am, setup camp, met some guys from PA camping next to us and took them up on their suggestion we have a beer and do some bench racing.  You don't get that checking into a motel or off site campground.  Likewise some of my favorite racing memories at Cedar Lake involve comping with fans and racers at the track during multi day events.  In my mind those kinds of experiences are the difference between a race and an event and having that capability to host campers does make a difference.

The only place this track will get raced on is WoO 2002 on the playstation 2. At that price there is no way anyone in their right mind would buy it. Fun track on the game though.

You could be right on WoO show but it all depends on who gets the track & you have to remember there might be a few people or a group or people that would not have to borrow the money then all the interest talk is gone    Glen Murra

The only think i can think of they would need to do to the track is dig it up and sift it like jackson did, i was surprised at how jackson turned out, figured the 1st night would be a rut fest but the track hase been good all year. so in my opinion that would be the first thing i would do dig it up sift it out and put the dirt back in .

I think it will sell on the low end of the auction price. Some people may not realize that Brandon is 2 miles from Sioux Falls and there is a lot of money in Sioux Falls. I think there will be a group of people that buy it. My hope is that they will team up with Jackson and run cross cross promotions or a point fund together. Knoxville is probably too far away to really work with but they should not work against each other.

Whoever buys it should not expect to get rich. Probably break even is the best case scenario. There is plenty of room for camping but most of the grounds are in a flood zone so I don't know how that would work for insurance. Probably the biggest issue to overcome is that the Rubins pissed off drivers and Chuck pissed off the fans. If you can get someone that can promote it would be a huge success again.

I saw an ad in today's Sioux Falls Argus Leader for the first time announcing the auction. The paper also has an interesting article by Tom Savage entilted Top 10 moments in Husets Speedway history. The Badlands adventue didin't make the top 10, but then he probably meant the top 10 good things.

Jackson still has rocks.  Still is abrasive.  And eats tires like crazy.  Ask the drivers. Ask Greg Bakker.     Having said that, the racing has been pretty good since reconfiguring as long as they don’t get too much rain, or overwater.  .   I don’t believe Husets has any rock issues. However the dirt has been sitting idle for a while now.
