I guess I'd like to know what the "old Eldora" is that people on the message board are referring to.
|
I have only been there once for the non-wing Million but I watched the video of the Haud crash and it still looks scary fast comparted to anything here in the upper Midwest. I'm not getting this complaint at all. I mean, two guys crashed so hard it took my breath away just watching it on YouTube. I'm not seeing anything "slow" or "NAPCRAP" about the place. Speaking of terms like "NAPCRAP", I don't get that either. It is what it is, the top asphalt series in the world. Watching clips of Almirola's 200+ mph wreck it looked like some pretty serious business to me.
I'm thinking that some of the folks on these boards need to start buying the next bigger size Fruit of the Looms because the tight ones they're wearing are souring their disposition.

I will say this, Saturday night race green flag then just follow the leader. Literally. No passing at all. It seemed to me that The cars couldn't run the same line as the car in front of em in the corners bcuz it would upset their car. It was werid. I told myself last night I'm probably not going back to Eldora for lil while to watch wing sprints. I'll pay and drive to Attica or Waynesfield, Limaland etc. To watch 410s especially on short tracks. Better car counts, wayyy better racing, car actually passing g each other and having to wheel the shit out their car, more likely to see a local driver, or a lower funded team actually win a race and drive to the front. Like last night you could just tell Sheldon didn't have a chance with his motor to stay up front with shatz or any of them. Put him on a short like Waynesfield and that's entertainment to me. I love Eldora. I live 40 mins from there but everybody is right that surface isn't the same. Heat races are always boring as heck anymore. They spread out and that's it.

I believe they took about 5-7 degrees of banking out of the corners......actually by building the bottom up if I'm not mistaken so they didn't have to mess with the outside walls. Might not sound like much was taken out, but it was. And back in the day, just when you thought nobody could run higher, along comes the Wild Child and he passes on the outside! Eldora is still damn fast, but with today's power and speed, and the banking of old, it would be TOO damn fast!

If anyone is surprised to see the 1A on the bottom and putting the left front tire letters on the wall. You didn't watch Ole scruffie to much. All I am going to say is Knoxville, he kicked all them boys a**es.

I'm in a feisty mood so I'll throw some more fuel in the fire. Knoxville by way of comparison is a flat track but thousands flock to the place every August. I have seen awesome races and dogs on every size track.

Did anyone else notice how quiet the 15 was Saturday? Maybe they had mufflers on? I know when it slicks off not as much throttle is used but I had no trouble hearing everyone else

Theres no doubt a big part of their success is a calm smooth engine. I guess thats why its taking months and months to get a ford that soft.
Luna's Ford engine style that won 2 WoO titles and 3
Kings Royals before a weight rule against the best EVER
in their prime and now DOMINATES super dirt late model
racing is no longer allowed/wanted in a WoO sprint
car.... Was Luna a miracle worker?

I was there as well. If you look at the qualifying times they were all pretty consistant (and fast). About a second faster than the previous night. When the entire field is running similar lap times, it sometimes makes for a boring race. I believe there was 10 laps to go after the last caution in the feature and it took Schatz basically that entire time to catch the back of the field. Nights like this need to go caution free to make it somewhat exciting.
Friday night the track looked like it lacked grip and the high side wasn't working. Atleast you saw passing though.

I've not missed many openwheel shows at eldora in the last 40 years. Yes it's still fast, but it just doesn't have the edge of your seat intensity it once had. If you were at the "million" and came back now you'd see. Everything about the place is nicer/better except the racetrack.

The banking is definitely different. Standing in the infield by 3 and 4 there was a slight banking from the inside wall to about halfway to the outside wall, but from halfway up to the outside wall the banking was much steeper. Now it seems to be same top to bottom.

Innocent mistake. F1 is off my radar if that's what youre referring to. NASCAR is still big even if we're going to split hairs.

But the biggest ? is why did Tony feel compelled to ruin the track?
whatbasis?
did Earl not make something great that only Tony felt was not great?

Eldora was the 2nd most popular racetrack in the world next to Indy......without Tony
Legends of the sport ran Eldora without Tony
Eldora wa very very fast without Tony
Eldora had great racing and bad racing without Tony
So what did Tony fix messing with the track? It was a established venue without Tony so why fix what was not broke??????????????????????

sorry one last rant then i will shut up cause Tony dont care...
I strongly believe with the things i said above that anybody with some money could have taken over Eldora and with it being a established venue that people from all over visited that people would have still visited cause it was like a landmark that Earl built.
But then Tony comes along and thinks he needed to put his touch on it by trashing the race track....
upgrades were needed and our needed at lots of tracks across the country but to think for one minute that Tony stood there after buying it and looked at all the history and knowing its allready established and he says to himself "lets take speed and excitement out of the track and fans will love me for it cause were literally gonna bring nascrap here and race the pushtrucks that push off legendary racers that have raced here and people will love me for it"
WHATEVER

In the Eldora book I think Earl said something to the effect of wanting to slow down the Outlaws because they were going too fast. Can anyone confirm this? I'll look in my book when I get home tonight.

they were going to fast.... or was it crapcar complaining to Tony about the track being fast on the top and no chance for anybody that dont know dirt track racing to race and pull of a sliidejob and get back to the top so Tony said "okay nascar I will alter a historical land mark for your guys money to come race here 1 time a year" the hell with this place he said
