Oklahoma's first women Race Car driver passed today. Buddy Faye Ebey (Foster) was instrumental in allowing women in the Pit Gate and in competition at Fairgrounds Speedway (SFS) and other tracks across the state, including Enid, Goldsby, and others.

Wes Farrand, 75, of Kansas City, MO, passed away March 31, 2010. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, April 8, 2010 at Floral Hills Funeral Home.
Wes was born on October 21, 1934 in Independence, MO to Frederick and Louise Farrand. He was a truck driver and a member of Teamsters Local 41 and Local 541 for over 32 years. Wes was an avid race car driver. "Wes was a good hard racer whom I considered to be a clean driver. He also wasn't about to let anyone run rough shod over him." This was quoted from Bud Hunnicut's book, Up on the Wheel. Kansas City auto racing was synonymous with Wes Farrand. As his career was in its infantcy, so was the competition in Kansas City. He started with modifieds and graduated to Midgets and Sprints. He was always a top competitor. He had a racing glint in his eye until the end of his life. "If you raced with Wes fair and square, he could race 100 laps with you and never touch you. And if you beat him, you beat him! But if you touched him, he was a little touchy about touching back. Wes loved to hunt and fish, and especially liked to go Morrell mushroom hunting. He was also a huge fan of Harry S. Truman.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Kenneth Farrand. Survivors include, children, Shirley Farrand-Plaisance; Michelle Spring and husband, Terry; and Wes Farrand, Jr.; grandchildren, Wes Plaisance; Bree Ottwell; Ashley and David Spring; great grandchildren, Alyssa and Ethan Plaisance; Tanner and Tamera Ottwell; and many close friends and racing friends. Vernon Edward Schrater, 86, of Great Bend, died Feb. 28 2010 at Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend. He was born April 8, 1923, in rural Timken, the son of Edward and Marie (Hofbauer) Schrater. He married Marjorie Elizabeth Yost on Oct. 7, 1944, at Alexander. She survives. He was a farmer and machinist. He was a resident of Great Bend since 1960, coming from Timken. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Aleutian Islands. He received the Bronze Star for his military service.

Mr. Schrater was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, both of Timken; Tired Iron Club, and the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers.

He built and raced cars, having a specific interest in modified and stock cars, which was also an interest shared with the entire family. In all of his pursuits, he strove for perfection.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, Marjorie, of the home, include twin sons, Steven Kent Schrater and wife Kathy of Roy, Utah, and Roger Vernon Schrater and wife Jeanita of Albany, Ore.; one sister, Velma Schneider of Atlanta, Ga.; five grandchildren, Mike Schrater and wife Jo, Jared Schrater and wife Kerri, Kristtoffer and wife Melissa, Karsten Schrater and wife Misty, and Terri Jo Glover and husband Brent; and eight great-grandchildren.

Bobby Gene "Pistol Pete" York: 1931-2010

Bobby Gene “Pete” York was born August 24, 1931 in Vera, Oklahoma the son of George and Ollie (Booker) York. He completed this life on Sunday, October 31, 2010 at the age of 79.

Pete was currently working as a shop superintendent for York Plumbing Company. He was a retired district supervisor for Hudson Oil Co.. He was a fixture on the local dirt track auto racing scene for over 50 years, 30 as a driver and the last 20 years helping his two sons.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Deloris (Hill) York, his daughter, Rhonda Leathers, his sisters, Trudy Van Horn and Edna Weeks. He is survived by his daughters, Paulette Foster and her husband Richard of Broken Arrow and Debbie McCage and her husband Jeff of Tulsa; his sons, Bobby G. York, Jr. and his wife Vickie of Sperry and Mike York and his wife Tonya of Tulsa; his step-son Bill Bristol and his wife Ruby of Tulsa; 14 Grandchildren and 20 great Grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 4th at the Floral Haven cemetery.

BILLY JOE BOOKOUT (7/29/1935-6/16/2006)
Funeral services for Billy Joe Bookout, 70, of Enid, will be 10 a.m. today, June 16, 2006, at Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Velmer Goebel will officiate. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery of Lahoma.
Billy was born July 29, 1935, in Walnut Ridge, AR, to Tolbert and Ada (Hutsell) Bookout and died in Enid Tues-day, June 13, 2006.
He moved to Wichita chasing a racing dream. There he met Stella A. Kingsolver and married her April 4, 1965. They moved to Enid in 1967. He worked for B&W Tank Service, Bookout Detail, B&W Sand & Gravel and then Bookout Wrecker & Salvage. He retired about a year ago. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Lahoma.
He is survived by sons, Tony Bookout and wife Stacy of Enid, Jerry Bookout and wife Kim of Wichita, KS, David McGill of Lufkin, TX, Dennis McGill of Salem, OR; daughters, Cindy Pekrul and husband Doug of Enid, Sheri Williams of Goddard, KS, Tammy Goode and husband Ed of Cheney, KS, and Karen Freidman of Wichita, KS; two sisters, Glenda Kelly of Norwich, KS, and Dean Fisher and husband Bob of Smithville, AR; 20 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Stella, Aug. 31, 1999, great-granddaughter Madison Victor, his parents, and two brothers, Melvin and Troy.
Memorials may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation Heart Division with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home acting as custodian of the funds.

Bernard ‘Bernie” Dean Beydler was born July 30, 1936, in Delta, CO, to the late Bernard and Louise (Welsch) Beydler. He passed away Monday, January 24, 2011 in the Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital at the age of 74.

On November 23, 1954, he was united in marriage to Twila Bartley in the First Christian Church in Oceanside, CA. In early years, Bernie worked for Farm Bureau selling insurance and later owned and operated WaKeeney Truckline, Inc.

During his spare time he enjoyed driving race cars (especially on a dirt track), hunting coyotes and fishing. He always looked forward to his fishing trips to Lake Texoma, OK with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Twila; three sons, Larry and wife Carla, Gary and special friend, Athenna, Alvin and wife, Becky; and a daughter, Rhonda Whisler and husband, Bob, all of WaKeeney; thirteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Betty Beydler of Spokane, WA.

Two brothers, Kenneth and Alvin Beydler, preceded him in death.

Visitation will be Thursday evening from 5:30 to 7:30 PM.

Services are 10:30 AM Friday, January 28, 2011 at Schmitt Funeral Home with Pastor Troy Miller officiating and Interment is in the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at WaKeeney.

Terry Uehlings wife of 25 years.

Paula Gae Uehling passed away February 2, 2011, at Lakeside Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. She was born April 18, 1943, in Hutchinson, Kansas, the daughter of Molly Marie and Lawrence A. (Larry) Antenen. She was united in marriage to Terry Uehling on August 15, 1985. From their home on their farm in Ness County, they shared over 25 years of marriage. Paula and Terry enjoyed being part of a sprint car racing family during his years as a driver and car builder. She cared for him during his five-year recovery from a severe racing accident in 1987. Paula graduated from Ness City High School in 1961 and Kansas State University in 1965 with a bachelor of science degree in business. Paula's teaching career included teaching business classes at Turner High School in Kansas City, Kansas, Bazine High School, St. Mary's of the Plains College, Dodge City Community College, and Outreach classes for Dodge City Community College. She used her business skills and experiences at Uehling Farms, the Federal Land Bank and Riverside Chiropractic. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, P.E.O., Chapter FW, and Do Gooders Relay for Lite team. Paula was a member of the Indian Hills Saddle Club, winning many ribbons and awards with her horse, Nena. She belonged to Women Involved in Farm Economics (WIFE). Paula was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Terry Uehling of Ness City; sons Cale Good (Andrea), Omaha, Nebraska, Brennan Uehling (Cammy), Hays, and Lance Good (Laura), Garden City. Her sisters, Sue Ann Stewart (Clark) of Olathe, Sally Yost of Springfield, Missouri, and brother Ronald of Dodge City survive. Surviving grandchildren are Jenna Uehling, Logan Good, and many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Paula's Life will be held Saturday, February 12, at 11:00 at the First Methodist Church in Ness City. Her cremation followed multiple organ donations in Omaha, Nebraska. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to: Do Gooders Relay for Life in care of Paula's longtime friend Sabra Clark, 405 McKay Drive, Ness City, Kansas. 67560.
