I watch them both every week. These kinds of things are relative as there are people out there who watch pavement racing who would tell us all we're morons for watching dirt track racing and there are people who are into bird watching who can't understand why anyone, anywhere likes to watch cars go in circles. Quite frankly, I get sick and tired of hearing Late Model fans trying to tell sprint car fans that sprint cars are follow the leader and take too long to get pushed off. Sprint cars due tend to spread out more but they also tend to be much more unpredictable from my experience. I don't think it would be possible for a late model to do what Don Kreitz Jr. did last year when he ate up over a second a lap over the last 6 laps to steal the win from Montieth. Some people like side by side racing and that's fine. Like I said, its all an opinion and personal preference just like some folks prefer Coke over Pepsi and hot dogs over hamburgers. Me personally, I could give a shit less if I ever watch another late model race. They just don't do it for me. To me, sprints are far more exciting. I think sprint cars produce a lot more edge of your seat action. As far as late models being adaptive to a wider range of surfaces, from my experience, that isn't true. I've seen MANY nights at Port Royal where the track slicked off and the sprint cars were running 3 feet from the outside fence and then the late models come out and everyone runs around the bottom and the middle while the few who try to run the top, go backwards. But it is what it is. To me, the side by side thing gets a little mundane. I like to see guys making moves, bold moves and there is no other form of racing that I've seen, where the cars are as capable of that as sprint cars. Even with all the rule changes, there are guys such as Schatz, Jac, Hodnett, Dietrich etc. who will make moves to come forward that just take your breath away. But that's just me. I get sick of hearing people argue winged vs. Non winged, late models vs. Sprint cars, modifieds vs. Sprint cars, Posse vs. Outlaws. Just go do what you enjoy. If that's watching sprints, I'll see you there. If its watching late models, go enjoy yourself and introduce someone new to our sport of DIRT TRACK RACING. Life is way too short to argue over these things.

I like them both but they are completely different.Weight being first and not being open wheel they are safer and races are a longer. The Late Models seem to race for bigger purses and seem to get more TV exposure.Talent is equal there are great drivers in each. There are some real personalities in both also.

Do you think I am odd for watching Late Models and Sprint cars as well as enjoying bird watching?

Not at all man. Variety is what makes life so interesting. It would get awfully crowded if we were all into the same things wouldn't it?

I don't disagree but like I said, Late Models just don't do it for me. Really neither does anything else other than sprints (both winged and traditional) and midgets. But that's just my preference. I've watched hundreds of Late Model races on many different tracks and they just didn't do it for me there's nothing wrong with that. It isn't wrong or right, its just an opinion. Obviously plenty of people like them because they race all over the country and the same can be said for sprint cars. I just don't get why people have to argue about it and compare apples to oranges the way they do. You hit the nail on the head. They're both very different.

Seriously though-the only birds I like to watch are being deep fried or broasted and then put on my plate!
I agree with you though at the end of the day. My orginal point was that no one can say Late Models don't provide great racing-because they do. My preference is still sprint cars too. It is hard for me to explain why it is my favorite, but I think you hit the nail on the head. Although late models tend to be bunched for longer periods of time and remain side by side for long laps, the closing rate and excitement of the passes in sprint car racing are almost always better. And while there are great personalities in both Late Models and Sprint Cars, I believe spint car racing definitely has an edge in that category too.
All of that said, you are correct; we are all dirt racing fans with our own preferences. I could care less to ever see another modified race. If they get going and stay green for long periods of time, the racing is usually very good. But staying green is the issue and it is for most people. But there are those who absolutely love modified racing. More power to you and enjoy! At the end of the day we are all still dirt track fans!
(I don't even mind going to see cars going 325 mph in a straight line)

I meant "couldn't care less"--my wife the English teacher would kill me if she saw that.

Good catch. That's a pet peeve of mine. The conversation usually goes something like this...
Hank: "I could care less."
Me: "Really? How much less could you care?"
Hank: "What?"
Me: "How much less could you care?"
Hank: "I don't get what you're asking."
Me: "You told me you could care less. I'm just trying to ascertain exactly how much less you could care about the given situation."
Hank: (Finally understanding what I'm getting at) "Hah! You're such a dick."
Me: (smirking) "I know. You probably won't do it again though."
(see also: people who think irregardless is a word and people who pronounce supposedly, "supposably.")
I think I have brain damage.
