Very cool. No huge rv's and open trailers. Also it's open country off turn 3. Thanks man those are awesome.

Brings back memories. The first Nationals I attended was in 1962. I remember the old wood grandstands and the pits with no pit wall. The most interesting photo to me was the Taylor Weld #94. I remember the way it looked in the early 60's compared to the "restored" version that sits in the Hall of Fame today. Thank you for posting the pictures.

I'm curious about all the white pants and white shirts in the pits back in the days.  Was everyone not extremely dirty at the end of the night?  How often did you have to buy new attire for race day?  I'm guessing everyone just bleached the hell out of everything?

Also, who started the trend of rebeling away from not wearing white everything back then?  What happened when the first pit guy got out of the truck and decided he was going to wear shorts and tennis shoes?

Just bored at work and wondering!

Used to be the rule was you had to wear 50% white in the pit area for visibility. Used to be pretty dark in the pits, and obviously no lights on the trailers like now.

Back to a time when men built everything and 20 some second laps were fast.Disputes were settled right at the moment and the racers helped each other. You could buy a new Corvette engine put it in and be competitive if you had the money and take it back to local dealer and get another if it broke[ at least the first time ]or just go to the junk yard and find what you needed. Ingenuity was welcomed and this was around the time that men like BobTrostle,Lenard Mcarl,Freddie Kain revolutionalized sprint car racing. Those days are long gone and today everyone can buy the same pieces and I dont know if it is any more fun than those days .Many cars not including labor were $1000 or less compared to all the rules we have and cars including engines and fancy haulers that are  expensive to say the least .I remember in about 1960 watching the super modifieds at the Iowa State Fair as an FFA usher and how fast they seemed. It was a hobby and labor of love for racing now it is a business and usually one that doesnt break even. Not much different then Nascar when you could drive your car to the track now it takes several milion to have a start and park team.

Wasn't alive during this time, but I remember reading some articles about white clothing in the pits.  I read an article where one track would make you pay more (double??) for your pit pass if you were not in all white.   The article also said that it was for safety.

Lots of home made headers, or just straight exhausts...

Some of them only show 3 pipes.... V-6s?

Looking at vehicles in background there is a picture of a Camaro and it seems they were introduced in 1967.The days of towing with a 1/2 ton pickup or a station wagon with an open trailer bring back some memories of seeing the race cars headed for their local track going down the hiway.

I'm not sure if all of the pics I loaded are from the same year, a lot of them yes, all of them probably not. The picture of the 300 car has me sitting in it, I was born in 66 so I'm thinking that pic is from 68?

My grandfathers name is Earl Tharp from Marion, Ia, My dad's name was Dusty Isaacson.

The only other pics I have at the moment are from somewhere in Inianapolis I believe? Same genral Circa, about all I remember it was that it was an asphalt track. I could post those if you'd like.

On the white pants - first race I went to the pits was in '69 or '70. Freeport IL. I was working part time at a speed shop. Admission was $3.00 if you didn't wear white, $1.00 if you DID wear white. I went 8 times or so that summer and my poor mother somehow got my one pair of white jeans clean every week. Her laundry soap was called Fels Naptha. If it really had naptha in it, I'd guess that's how it cut the grease.

By the time I actually started racing in the mid 80s, no one was wearing white. So, sometime between those years is when they stopped.

Good stuff.  White pants that fit instead of baggy camo shorts. Nothing Chinese in sight.  No black wheels. The good ol days for sure.   We need a PA thread like thisSmile

Luna's Ford engine style that won 2 WoO titles and 3
Kings Royals before a weight rule against the best EVER
in their prime and now DOMINATES super dirt late model
racing is no longer allowed/wanted in a WoO sprint
car.... Was Luna a miracle worker?

I'm a noob here and didn't realize that when I edited the Topic Name that my original post disapeared...I've added several more pics, scroll down to view.

I love the trailers, all with the same purpose but meeting their individual purpose. I wonder how many 18 wheeler car ramps were used in their construction?

A V6? Possible as GM cut the rear 2 cylinders off a 215 cu in aluminum block Buick in 1962 casting a V6 in cast iron. More probable many early V8s only had 3 exhaust ports per head. A Studerbaker? More likely a mid 60s Pontiac!

Neat pictures, thanks.

Awesome pics and thanks for sharing.

I enjoy looking at the old pictures as the cars were so different.  Headers, roll cage, suspensions, body panels - everyone had their own spin on things.  Look at the tires in the racks on some of the trailers - different sizes, makers, treads, etc.  It certainly was a less regulated era.  Good thing for better safety today in a very dangerous sport.
