That was the concept behind the name as in Outlaws ride into town, steal your loot and ride off into the sunset.  I had three young kids and was working nights and weekends during their first few seasons so I didn't catch them until around 1983 or so and have seen them every year since.  If memory serves me there were a lot of years they didn't come close to 15 to 18 full time travelers.  The Outlaws were never intended to be a self contained series like NASCAR where all the cars follow the tour and it's tough for a local to even get into the show and only one or two would try.

The NSL has clearly stated from the outset that their intent is to work with other series and has left a bunch of open dates in June open to accomidate the Outlaws when they are in the midwest.  Then we've got the All Stars now owned by a WoO car owner so I can't imagine them scheduling against the Outlaws.  The IRA does the same thing and, in fact, is working with the Outlaws when they're up this way.  You wouldn't know all that to read the posts on here, according to some of my fellow keyboard jocks it's all out war and every series for themselves.  And of course there's the recurring them of the offseason that the Outlaws will meet their demise.

Not much has changed on here since the board started.  Some different people posting but the themes of the doom and gloom posts are consistent.

Enjoy the coming season.  I think it's going to be a good one.

As I remember it the Outlaws started as a group of racers fed up with the monarchies of USAC and IMCA in the early to mid 70's and wanted to race for good purses anywhere they chose to and with as few rules as possible. Before the Outlaw name really took hold a lot of the races were called open shows-race what you bring. Ted johnson started the gunslinger approach along the Pennsylvania racers-a good marketing ploy which didn't endup getting the big TV air time they were after. Nothing is wrong with more WOO teams-locals will still come, car counts would be higher and the fans would get more racing for their hard earned money.

In 2007: 26 outlaw teams started the season, I believe 23 finished the season.

that's because the NST folded after one year and all those teams had no where else to run on a national level. the next year i think the numbers fell off to the normal 10-15 teams.

the outlaws were formed because at the time no one knew who would show up to any particular event. the top teams picked and chose where they were going to race and didn't follow any type of schedule. the promoters and fans never knew who was goinmg to show up. the top teams that wandered about like gypsies or "outlaws", would show up for the high paying events around the country. ted figured if he put together a few teams that he could take around to different tracks in the country and gaurantee them good money every race and gaurantee the promotors and fans who would be there, then it might be a good thing.

at first the "outlaws" and there were only about 8-10 of them would come to the local track and have to run against your guys with your rules. that was the draw to the fans, that these few guys would come and run against your best. then as time went on and the idea caught on, the traveling organisation realised they couldn't try to carry several different motor and wing combinations to run local rules so they formed their own series that would come in and you had to run their rules.

still they only brought about 10 cars. that was always the best traveling number to go from town to town. they couldn't bring the whole show because if they were the whole show then there would be no reason for the locals to race against them. also the travelers had to be able to finish high enough every night to afford to keep traveling. they wanted to make sure all their cars made the show so they kept the number of travelers small.

i remember when the traveling numbers got big and the locals stopped racing with them because they couldn't make the show and it wasn't worth it.

Screw the WoO..they will be fine for a few years and frankly when the time is right to consolidate the touring 410 series, it will take more than Tony Stewart, Roger Slack and company.

USAC needs fixed NOW, especialy the dirt champ cars.
