Thanks 65

Clearly a fun job for younger guys, or old pros who've earned the higher numbers.... but not a long term plan for security

Food not generally included, either.

Fun job, but your future becomes pretty apparent when Karl Kinser and Kenny Woodruff are in the next car wash bays with you at 2:00 in the morning.  No matter how much you might make, it's a tough, tough job that turns into a grind after you've been around the merry-go-round a couple years and the excitement wears off.  Never worked with Rob Hart, but I know he and anyone that's done it will attest to this.

Does anyone know what an average salary of WOO pit crew member is?   Also does anyone know what an average salary of a crew chief is?   I don't want to know about the drivers best friend who is doing it over the summer because he is bored.   I want to know for the guys who do it for a living what do they make.   For this conversation, lets assume that they have thier CDL liscense.

Thanks

Jon

To me nothing wrong with question and I know that when we raced and had Leonard McCarl help us when he was still around we went forward everytime.Tough but fun job with right team and good way to learn and see country.Probably not for someone with young family.I know of a guy from our town that worked for Schumakers Top Fuel team and another that worked on a Sprint Team and the pay was about like a regular job with benifits of having fun doing it.

This is a very valid question if one is contemplating entering this particular job market. The considerations given have been spot on. Just as I did with the motorsport photography for years I knew I would not earn a "living" at it but would have a life experience that few get. The NST years with Brownfield are some of my fondest. Although it was a paid gig John and I were already "retired" from private industry and our children were grown and out of the house. We were not expensive and hard to convince to sign on. The people and memories I have of those years are priceless.

Whatever it is, it ain't enough and the majority of these guys LOVE their job and few work harder.  Another majority is the fact that these are great guys, spent many a rainout in the local establishment swapping lies with 'em, always fun.  Oh, you want stories, these are the guys that have 'em, they would blow this place up with what they've seen.  Season's Greetings to each and every one of them....

A good friend of mine was a crew chief for a KKR team. He got a base salary and a portion of the winnings, also had health insurance.

Meals were not paid for when on the road. Averag salary from what I gathered as he had a wife and children and moved from Ohio to North Carolina To take the position.

The general public has no difficulty in dicusssing in public forums salaries of teachers.

Seems complete fair, since the "general public" pays the salary of teachers without having much choice on the matter.

One other point on school teachers vs. WoO crew members. I suspect there is no such thing as "tenure" for a World of Outlaw crew member that makes it nearly imnpossible to get rid of a poor performer. I imagine WoO crew members wuold love a union that would suport incompetent/lazy employees every step of the way.

Some of the better funded teams may offer "perdiem" to certain team members. Maybe $25-50 a day when on the road. Rob Hart is fairly spot on with his assessment.

I think if anyone is going to be able to give a decent answer to this it would have to be Rob Hart, nice guy too Smile
