My view is all size tracks have their place. What if all the larger tracks were cut down? It would be about a week and we would all regret it. Any given night the racing can be good or it can be mediocre at any track, but isn't that part of the draw to dirt track racing, the surface is changes every time the cars hit the track.

I   thank you  all  for your comments and thoughts  , whether  it  is  a  1/4- 3/8 -4/10  or even  a  half mile ,  I see  it  as  a  problem  not  providing  consistent   good racing  for each  one  of you  . Yes, track  conditions  play  a  big  part , locked   down cars  such  as  what  the  WoO  rules  provide  ?  but  the bigger  problem is  costs  to the  car  owners . How  long  can  we  continue  on this pace   ? its forcing  teams   not to  race  as much  , pick and choose  what  race they race at ,electing  not  to race  at   some good paying  events  , causing  short   fields  and  promoters  scratching  there  heads , what  do  I   have  to do ? to get these  guys  to my  races  ?  I  know  some  will disagree  with me  again  , but  you know  we  have  a  major  problem  here  in  PA  and  other  areas . I can  only hope  all  tracks  will  start  working  together to solve  the mentioned  problem that  we are  facing , and bring  more  competitive   racing  back and  find a  way  to cut costs .

Ain't gonna happen, and guess what?  It won't matter much.   As far as costs escalating/skyrocketing, those issues were being discussed 25 years ago.   None of the sanctioning bodies has done anything, let alone work together on things.  And yet racing still survives....

There  not  going  to do anything  because   fans   keep packing  the Outlaw races ,  I  guess  some people  are  satisfied   with   the  410  winged  racing  the way  it is  . The racing  could be  better  but  some do not want  it  to change .

I heard about that deal and yes those things can be some real rattle traps so if they're going to have those kinds of shows they need to look them over pretty good.  Didn't mean to give the impression that I go to that stuff on a regular basis but I got roped into shooting school bus night a few times to cover for someone.  My son brings his kids out to that one because his in-laws live close to the track so it's more of a family deal than serious racing.

As far as the one I referred to in the early 60's, those were considered race cars back in the day and were as safe as anything else out there at that time, Sprints included.  They weren't very safety conscious in the early 60's.  You had to be there.

By the way, school bus nights draw 10x the crowd that their regular racing does.  I remember one year we had a great field of Late Models lining up for their A Main as the stands cleared out after the bus race.  Now they give the Late Models the night off and run B Mods and Hornets because the people that come for the buses don't care about real racing.

I'm not down on the junk shows as long as they do a good job protecting themselves.  I don't get paid enough to worry about that shit.  LOL

I was there in the 60s. Grew up watching jalopy races. Saw many guys get hurt and burnt. Looking back now I wonder how there were not a lot more hurt or killed. At least they didn't go that fast. But now we know better and even as a fan I worry about safety for the drivers. Thats why racing buses & rv's seems so stupid to me. Even if that stuff draws huge crowds. Tracks complain about their expenses and how much do you suppose a fatal accident raises a tracks insurance? Can not believe tracks think the reward from bus etc races is worth the risk.

I worry about the safety aspect of some of those crates too but they pack the tracks and rival WoO crowds and the there is virtually no purse to pay out.  Our concerns are not going to stop the non-race-fan kids and their parents from packing the places to the rafters one night out of the year and the tracks love the jingle.

As far as the jalopies of the 60's go, the old Supermodifieds and Sprints without roll cages were just as brutal if not worse.  They were faster and got a lot more air when they went over.  The jalopies did slow tip overs most of the time but the deal with those was the fires because they hadn't figured out fuel cells.

If people would have been more concerned about safety in the 60's the sport might not be here today.  That was a tough time for racers.

I've been pretty fortunate and have not seen many ambulances roll in the past decade and nothing serious when they did.  That can change in a minute with racing so I hope that my streak of watching safe racing continues.  wink

I think great racing is watching the cars go as fast as they can at that track on any given night. Great close competition is what many call great racing, if you truly want great close competition with lots of side by side, slide jobs, and very close finishes, go to go kart racing. To me sprint cars are the big bad super fast car, and watching them squeeze out each death defying MPH is thrilling to me.

+1  I love Knoxville and wish we had anything remotely like it down in my neck of the woods.   I also wish I lived close enough to make it there every week.

I live in the heart of 1/2 mile countrty(central PA) amd I wish we had more bullrings around here. It's just a fact of life that the cars get strung out more on the 1/2 miles amd the action is closer and tighter on the smaller tracks. Lincoln has, by far, the best racing around here. To me a high-banked, wide 3/8 is the perfect track for sprint car racing. You can see a great race on the 1/2 miles form time to time and it's awe-inspiring at those speeds, but those nights are few and far between.  1/2 miles are for back in the day when you needed a big track to reach speed. JMO Most 1/2 miles are fairground tracks that were originally built for horse racing. When was the last time anyone built a new 1/2 mile track?

Agree with what you said but the race last night at the Grove proves you can have a good race on a 1/2 mile. Sure the race was won from the front row, BUT, Stevie and Hodnett battled for the entire 25 laps even through traffic. And the Hammer from 12th to 3rd with a late race surge past Dewease and Dollansky. Great battles thruout the field...Kreitz/Wolfe and Blaney/Monteith to name two.
