21 year old sprint car rookie Darren Pifer will undergo skin grafts on his ankles tomorrow at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was life flighted there after suffering burns over 23% of his body when the fuel line came apart and his car erupted in flames. His ankles were burned the worst. Thank God he was wearing a three layer firesuit and full nomex including socks, or this could have been so much worse.

Sportsmans Speedway in Knox, PA had no fire crew or fire truck on hand. His Dad had to run by t-shirt wearing track crew who just stood there and watched Darren burning and put out the flames on his suit with his personal fire extinguisher.

Please keep The Beast in your thoughts and prayers.

You  need a safety crew to go to any race car stoped on track.  You do not  know if a drive line broke and the guy is bleeding to death.  This did happen a few years ago.  Anyone that knows anything about alcohol fires should know that you can not always see the fire. A  fire  truck parked on the other side of fence may not be quick enough.  You need first responders in infield in fireproof uniforms and helmets.

Update on Darren:

Darren was released form Mercy Hospital, in Pittsburgh PA, on Monday May 26.  He will have to go back to Pittsburgh one a week for a while for the doctors to check how his burns are healing. After that, he will have physical therapy 3 days a week.

He is doing very well, and has no signs of infection as of right now. If all goes well, he should be back in the car as early as mid August.

Thank you for everyones prayers and concerns. We greatly appreciate it.

Rod Pifer

I unfortunately was there the night Darren got burned. And the prople in the infield were very confused and did seem like they knew what they were doing. As far as fire protection at this track, THERE IS NONE. There hasn't been any fire truck at this track for many years. As far as fire protection with a fire company, I raced there in the late 90's when they had the local volunteer fire department as the fire protection. I had an onboard fire in my micro sprint, I got out of the car on fire. The firemen put out the car and not me. I was lucky that night a fellow driver saw me rolling around put me out while the firemen were spraying my car. I was lucky and did not receive any serious burns. I never raced there again. As driver be aware of your surrounds.
