We have had both Dish and DTV.  When I wanted to add a DVR Direct was going to charge $275.  I said, Dish will install the latest equipment for nothing.  Do you want to match that or do you want me to switch?  They said switch.  I called Dish and the same guy, in the same truck that installed Direct, showed up and installed Dish!  Go figure!

That is just the way it works.  You can't take adantage of FREE stuff everytime you want it.  If you want to upgrade, it costs, or you can switch.  The best thing to do is get your own equipment as upgrades.  If you hae them come out, it will cost you.

Tried to get DTV, but dude said I did not have line of sight and suggested Dish. Dish came out and said DTV dude was probably being lazy as he had great line of sight for DTV. Have had Dish for over a year now and love it - no problems at all.

I've never paid for an upgrade yet.

Line of sights are different for Dish and Direct.

Depending on what you are trying to upgrade and how sweet you talk to the person on the other end of the line......quite possible.  You are paying for whether you know it or not tho........

I have had both, I use to be a big DirectTV supporter and had them on a couple different occasions after moving and such. The last time I cancelled them though, simply because I wanted to bundle my TV/Phone/internet so I went to a local cable provider and DTV treated me like garbage. I had there service at that house for over 5 years and so when I went to switch I never thought anything about being in a contract because when you startup with them its usually 2 years and then you can cancel when you want, but I called to cancel and they were telling me I was under a contract and I had no idea why, come to find out I had bought an additional HD reciever around a year before that at Best Buy. Because I paid for the reciever I had no idea they considered that re-upping the contract and they were insistant that it did, after many conversaitons and them beating around the bush about how did I re-sign the contract without knowing or signing anything and they had all kinds of excuses and also could never produce anything that stated that I was in a new 2 year contract, I finally just paid the early shutoff fee cause they sent it to collections but the kicker is they also made me send the equipment back that I supposedly bought at Best Buy, I said why should I send it back, I paid for it, they told me oh no, you just paid to lease the equipment, that box would be much more if you bought it. It was just so silly to me because I would have went back to DirectTv again, even if they would have just waived the early cancellation fee because of the mixup I would have went with them again but now, never again. The funniest thing about people asking to upgrade their equipment and them saying you have to pay to upgrade, so they move to the other co. and get all that stuff free, I've known several people who have done that and within the month the old company is calling them asking them to come back and offering all the stuff they asked for to begin with for free but they'd already switched.

I have now had Dish Network since Aug. and have been very happy with it. I got the hopper with sling adapter and it is quite awesome as to all it can do. I'm sure I'm not even using it to its full potential but its got a large DVR capacity and the ability to add additional storage, tons of on-demand content-both free and PPV. The coolest feature I think is the Dish Anywhere App. On my phone, computer or tablet I can put this app and I can watch either Live TV or DVR content from any of those things where ever I am. I went to a local company that contracts out with both providers so they sell both and the guy there told me that he thinks the Hopper is superior to DTV's Genie in functionality and features(that was his opinion anyways). One real nice thing about the Dish equipment is also the remotes don't need to be in direct line with the reciever, they will control it threw a door or wall so the reciever doesn't have to be sitting out in the open visible if you don't want. As far as programming goes, they all have similar programs, its just what package you have to get to get certain channels. I know DTV has the NFL and other sports packages but I have no interest in paying $400 to get all of the NFL games anyways, I can see if you want to watch a certain team and live in a different market but I would guess you could do a little digging on the internet nowdays and find that game broadcast somehow for free.

in 15 years, my bill has gone up a total of $5 per month (and that was when I added a 2nd receiver in 2003.

My equipment has been upgraded 5 times in the same time period.

It is in how you talk to them, I agree.  When they call and want you to upgrade, you simply answer "no".  Every upgrade I've gotten, I didn't pay for, they came in and upgraded to upgrade the equipment that "they" own.  I don't own any of it and haven't since 2001.  (I owned the original receiver when I purchased it @ Best Buy when DirecTV was fairly new).

Like I said, and you agreed, it is all in how you talk to them.  I really haven't had to, nor needed to upgrade.  I am happy with what i hae.  We agree that Directv is the way to go tho......

Yep, I think the only people that pay to upgrade are those that "have to have the latest and greatest" instead of waiting for the company to want you to have it so they don't have to service old equipment (and in today's technology "old means a year or less in a lot of cases).

Cell phone companies will be doing the same, but right now, there are enough people willing to spend $500 on a new phone every 6 months that they don't need to yet.

I had been a Direct-TV subscriber for years, until a receiver went bad and they wanted quite a bit to replace it. So I switched to Dish. When the installer was here I asked him which was the best system, since he installed both and he replied that whichever system you were switching to was best, as they both have good deals for the first year, then start charging a lot after that, so he recommended changing systems every two years, when the contract expires.
By the way, the next week Direct-TV called for four days straight, offering a free receiver to switch back.

I've had both and am presently with Dish and the main reason was DTV DVR would not record the 2nd part of a recording event if a power failure occured. Dish equipment always restarts and the rest of your event records. Nothing more frustrating than getting 1 hour of a two hour race/movie. New DTV equipment may be different but Dish is my choice...

Dish is my choice. My sister and my nephew both have Direct and I stay there a lot they both have more trouble than I do with Dish.

When I ordered Mav TV i had to get a HD reciever cause it was HD.

I like the way Dish remote works better than Direct!

Bob

Bob you gonna be at industry the 28th ?

Lets see and since I live in this cabin... One bedroom's for my fishing and camping gear and one bedroom is mine for sleeping, so I guess that leaves you guy's to fight over the screened in porch, the living room, or you can all sleep outside with the Javalina's.

I'm sure either company can be a pain in the ass at times.   My brother had a worse experience with Dish than the one you describe here with Direct.    My only complaint with Direct is when it thunderstorms.    Nothing like severe thunderstorms with tornado warnings in your area and your TV service goes out.   Of course my brother now has U-verse and guess what, it goes out sometimes too.  I guess nothing is ever perfect.
