After watching 305s and 360s both run at Devil’s Bowl at the winter nationals.  I can say there is not much of a difference in the quality of racing when they are each on the track in their own groups.  Both put on a great show on the large track.  Now if there was a 305 in a 360 race could I tell the difference?  Maybe depending on track conditions.   I watched a 305 run in an OCRS (360 2bbl) event in Oklahoma in April and the car finished second in the A main.  The track was dry and slick, plus the car had a really good driver in it.  I also was at the 360 Knoxville Nationals.  They ran 305s as a support class to the 360s.  But the 305 that was quick time for the night would have been in the top 10 times for the 360s.

I agree. The show at Devil's bowl was very competitive and I enjoyed the heck out of it. Same as the 2012 Lone Star Nats, my first time seeing them. I wish them well and will support the Texas bunch when I can. I would much rather drive 4 hours and see 40 racesavers than 4 hours to see a watered down WoO show. I think 12 WoO regulars showed up at Salina Hibanks this spring.

Eagle pit,,,, Why are you so concerned about those crate cars? Just seeing what you can stir up in the off season?

Keep em in Cali!!!!

I've never seen them in Cali. But I have seen a spec sprint race at ocean speedway but I think they are 350 crate engines. Never seen a 305 race yet.

We need more sprint car racing at our home track.

But, they aren't racing with the 360's.Smile Plus they aren't imitation, they are real sprint cars. I can refer you to our 6-time sprint car track champion for his opinion on the matter if you'd like since he raced the new class this past season and enjoyed it quite thoroughly.

And my sight and hearing are just fine; but thank you for your concern.

Come watch a 305 run Devils Bowl with the ASCS.......Some teams do........And this is not a dig on them, but they are quickly lapped traffic. If you look at most of the tracks that are switching to 305s, you will see a trend..... 410s....360s...305s.....And less and less PROMOTION!

Just wondering if promoters are just looking for a cheaper class?

I assume less 305s are going to get paid less than the 360s they are replacing?

Wonder no more.  If they are going to pay less,  they are looking for a cheaper class.  If they are going to pay the same, they are very nice promoters.  If they are going to pay more,  those $60,000 360's will just become $60,000 305's.  Wait a minute.  If those 305's start costing $60,000,  I just might be able to sell my used 305.  Say for $30,000,  $25,000,  $20,000, $19,000, $18,000.....  Say, where's that SMILE button?  You better believe I'd be saying adios to $125 To Start Land.

non wing spec sprint racing in Cali started as an economy class, last year the top runners are starting to build 30K engines to win. A group of these guys split off and run centural ca asphalt with "spec" motors because they could not keep up now we have a group of teams that want to win so give the rule book to an engine builder and  sure they have a steel crank a nice 26 lb Bryant, ultra light rods and 16 to one static with a iron head, most run a Beast chassis and a good shock package will run these guys 8,000- 20,000, new tires every time you go on the track if you are even thinking about being in the top 3. They get a little purse and the original club is on blocks, because these bad guys built bad ass cars and started winning. When will you guys quit trying to make racing sprint car racing afordable. Quit whinnen and go run a 4 banger. The rest of us will sacrfice everything to run 360 and 410's. Lots of us run on a budget and have no shot of winning, man we have fun though.

Just like velveeta is an imitation cheese substitute... 305's are an imitation sprint car substitute. They are similar to the real deal, just not quite the same.

You can try until you are purple faced to convince sprint car fans that 305's are the same as 360's but you will only be fooling yourself.

If you have a more affordable way to bring new racers into sprint car racing I'd like to hear it. This only means more future

360 & 410 drivers. If thats not to your liking go join the modified message boards.

Not to pass judgement 1 way or another on the 305, but this just continues to fragment the sprint car ranks here in cali. Kings has not got a weekly 360 show so maby this will be good for them. however, up north we have 410, 360, 360 spec, usac wingless, fernley sprint lites, chico econo sprint and my own pro 4 sprints. each of these classes has 10 or so cars weekly except the 410 and 360 that run 17-25. everytime someone starts a new class it is populated by members of the back of the old class. car counts go down and as a result purses stagnate. a part of this whole economy sprint deal is that they can't afford to travel so theres no numbers bump for additional racers. I wish scott well, but I just dont see sprint cars as successful down south period. and the 305's havent done that well in Oregon. so I don't think I would declare the demise of the 360-410 just yet.....paul

Paul, It did increase the car numbers in Nebraska for the 305's. We still have a 360 traveling group in Nebraska. Only 4 or 5 drivers dropped from the 360's and some of those run both. It has increased car counts at Eagle by double, talking 32 cars at the end of the season. We still have 30+ 360's that travel and that is our choice. Promotors sometimes try to cater to all and then the counts suffer! 305's work for us in the midwest. Not sayin' the will in NorCal.

Oregon doesn't have 305's   In the Northwest Washington and Oregon there are 410's that run only at Skagit, Open 360's at skagit but most are ASCS headed 360's. There are Limited 360's a nother spec head class. There are the 604 Gm crate motor cars that run at Sunset Speedway Banks OR, Coos Bay and SOS Southern Oregon Speedway Medford...

Most of the 360's in oregon are ASCS 360's.

The Non-wing cars are Open 360's, ASCS 360's, Limited 360's and Crate Motor  604 355's.

We tried a couple years ago to start a 305 Motor series and no we got Crate Motor cars that you can only run at a few tracks in Oregon and Washington. And most of the cars are owned by the track owners at Banks and Medford , Coos Bay. The cars from Banks have never ran at Coos Bay, Medford or the other way. The crate cars are a morf of a Sprint Car with home made injection.

Eagle Raceway pays $700 to win (dropped from $1000) and $250 (raised from $200) to start weekly (same total purse as the 360's were paid).......The recent IMCA Racesaver Supernationals there paid $2000 to win and $1000 to start (with very little drop off in positions) and approx 250-500 tow (not for certain)......some tracks may choose to pay less.....Eagle paid the same total purse as the 360's and should reach 30+ cars weekly in 2014........The NE360 group had a succesful 1st season,  ASCS Midwest will return, and possibly NCRA will continue to run specials throughout Nebraska and eastern Iowa, and of course Knoxville weekly.......With Denison Iowa, Iowa State Fairgrounds, and an 8 race traveling series in Nebraska/Eastern Iowa for the Racesaver 305's,  there should be more than enough sprint car action to go around next season.......... I'll be seeing them all at one time or another (Have I mentioned I love my job...LOL).......see ya' at the track...............SC

Yes, Eagle Pit Shack Guy has had major wood on here for the IMCA sprints.  Eagle was able to generate a good car count and I am sure it will continue to grow as it is more affordable and keeps people racing who couldn't if 360 racing was the only option.  I did notice when you hosted the IMCA Supernationals, the attendance in the stands was less than impressive (and this was the knoxville nationals of IMCA sprints).  On a weekly basis you draw a good crowd becuase of the 4 other classes you run with the sprints.  You get great car counts in all classes and the crowds are very good.  When you ran the 305's durning the supernationals without all the other classes, the crowd was not good.  When you ran your only 360 show of the year a month later, the crowd was much better.  This should atleast tell you that people DO notice a difference in the racing and prefer the 360 sprints to watch.  You can have good car counts but if you pay a nice purse to the 305s weekly i would think the 305s would have to put enough people in the stands on their own to justify the costs of having them race there.

I wouldn't say major wood, but yes, I AM excited about keeping sprint car racing going at Eagle.

This was the very first year that the IMCA Racesaver Supernationals, and I am confident that the event will continue to grow! Car count will be bigger, fan attendance will be greater once the word gets out about how good the show is!

Or those of us that drive up for the 360 shows will continue to stay at home when the 305 "sprint cars" are there...

And that is a mistake, in my opinion. The IMCA Racesaver sprints put on a whale of a show. If you actually like/love sprints and good racing throughout the pack, you are missing out.

I've been watching 410's since my first race in the early 80's. I'm personally not going to pay to watch cars go slower, bottom line.

most fans want to see the best racers, not the best races you find examples of this in every form of racing,

NHRA sportsman and pro stock have much closer consitant racers, most are in the pits when they run, bring out the two top fuel stands fill,'

the go kart races in Mississippi this weekend are another example of extreme close, look at the two biggest shows in Tulsa, the tulsa shootout has more cars more races and some of the cars are faster and closer than the midgets but the chili bowl brings the top drivers, so untill all other dirt sprint car classes drop, 305s and nebraska (like football) not on most peoples must see

Much like buying a ticket to a movie theater, I'm not gonna pay to catch a movie I Don't want to see.

And the attempt to question my love for sprint cars was feeble and it failed.

If they really want to promote these engines, pay the same as you would for a 360 show! Oh wait there it is, they are not gonna do that!!
