I'm sure this was a Great Bend Car. On the backstretch at Goldn Belt. The drivers name is coming to me. I'm thinking the owner was a Stan last name might have Cuzick or something similar. I think he worked at the NAPA store or warehouse. One of the guys that pitted on the car was almost the splitting image of myself. A lot of people at the track got us confused. But I don't remember his name.

This is Salina Speedway when it had a guard rail around it. I'm pretty sure this is Bill Willcoxon from the Great Bend area. He may have been more from Chase/Lyons area. You didn't see alot of 59/60 Mopar products.

I understand the Pedigo family have tons of photos. But I'm not sure who is in charge of them. Wouldn't that be a hoot to look through.

Marvin McNett from Great Bend at Great Bend.

Warren, Your pictures from that era reminds me of all the great 1950's era stock car bodied cars that raced at Hutch, Wichita, Great Bend , and other Kansas Speedways during that era. I'm sure collectors would cringe at the carnage that would take place at some of those races. My dad loved watching the semi late models race at 81 late in the season when the driving tactics, became very aggressive, knowing there was a long winter ahead, and plenty of time to build a new car, or fix a old one!

I have contacted her on facebook (Sandy Pedigo Smith) of great bend but haven't had a willing response yet. I will try later. I do have some news articles and stuff of Golden Belt and will post them soon. Warren - Those are great photos you have posted. Nice work

I think this was Shelby Steeson'a ride. I know Tom Lutkie also drove one with the same number. It just doesn't have the 81 Speedway look. Those cars had a look to them. I am thinking they may have been all lettered by the same person??

The 81 Speedway cars were not all lettered by the same person although there were several painters who did letter several cars regularly. (There were a lot of Wichita cars in the late '60s and most of the '70s.) I would attribute what I think you are describing as the 81 Speedway look to the 6.5 inch tire width rule 81 Speedway had. Unlike many of the cars that mostly raced elsewhere, the tires stayed inside the finders at 81 Speedway with such a confining tire rule. It also put a premium on getting a car to handle well. That, in turn, made it more difficult than to just slap on some wide tires and go racing at another track. To change tires like that required multiple other changes as well to get the car to handle well with the much wider tires.

I remember that, in the early years, the John Hebb / Mel Montgomery team would race their #5 car at 81 Speedway on Saturday night and then stay up all night changing almost everything on the car to get it ready to race at Great Bend on Sunday night. Mel told me that they finally decided it just wasn't worth it and built a separate car (the #05 car) to race at tracks other than 81 Speedway. Eventually, they quit racing at 81 Speedway all together.

A person who goes by PovertyFlats on the HAMB Forum posted these and some more. "I have alot of old black and white 8X10 photos on thick paper stock that my
helper Adam bought at an estate sale for $5. Lots of 55 Chevys in these photos."
