It takes all kinds. It is a given that pro wrestling is a staged sport. With that they could just as well stage all happy go lucky polite characters. They don't. Every entertainment venue needs good guys and bad guys. Goes back to old cowboy movies even. Unfortunately for those offended by intensity this is a 98% pure competition sport and intensity year in and year out if really the only recipe to a winner 20 some years or more. Hell I was at Eagle 3-4 years ago and Steve Kinser came in second. Lost it for no particular reason I can recall but I was in the pits 45 mins later and walked buy the back of his hauler and he was visibly pissed off like he just saw his wife kissing his preacher and they both denied it vehemently and told him he was seeing things. One would think after 30-40 years of this and yes winning hundreds if not thousands of races including all the heat races he would know by now there are losses that come along with this deal. I had to remind myself he would not have dominated and still be on top of his game if the PURE fact that he just lost a race that he truly had no expectations of himself doing. Read the article below and the comments from Dana (Steve's wife) about his fierce competitive drive that he has to this day, read Lone Wolf about Wolfgang, etc. You will realize these guys are their own biggest critics and live a life of self-imposed pressure to win at any cost well into their later years even that all of us can't begin to understand. Just enjoy their performance and take their actions in context and remind yourself they have plowed that personality into a sport & passion at their expense for our enjoyment of their performance. The jig will be up soon and ohhh how we will miss them and what will then be called their ass kicking personalities that made them the best that ever lived.

I appreciate the comedians that can be funny without using foul language. Why is it that the other comedians get laughs just for throwing in the "f-bomb"? To me, they are trying to make up for lack of comedian talent

When I hear that people say they have respect for a guy who flips another racer off, runs into him under caution, or even goes backwards around a track risking the safety of others to take another guy out under caution......I just don't understand it. There are racers with as much passion for the sport as Sammy, they just choose to present themselves in a respectable way. I respect the guy's talent, but I can't respect the guy. Whenever I've tried, he does something to leave a sour taste in my mouth. I just chose to like and respect the guys who know how to treat other human beings with the same respect.

i respect Sammy for his passion for what he does, I respect Sammy for his willing to race anywhere at anythime not matter the situation! i've been a Sammy fan ever since i was 6 when i went to his pit stall after he did get beat by some locals and he was more then pleasent with me signed my shirt and took a picture with me. Sammy just doesnt like to get beat and shows his frustation a little more then others.

Obviously, the man is hardest on himself in the end. When we are all slapping asses and drinking beer after the races he is punching walls in the hotel or coach at 1am. How many of us do that over a mistake at work even yearly? Him nor Steve, nor Wolfie (JO hit the weed so I think he is a much diff. story) would make a good neighbor I am sure because they have such a hard time putting down the gun. They are trapped in a body of pure competitive intensity.

Sammy is the true king of racing period and if some dumbass couldn't control his car and ran into you while you were trying to run down the leader. All of you that actually race ( not the keyboard jockeys) would not be happy either. Class acts are for nascar and nuns. Keep it like the good days of racing. I salute the swindells on a dominating performance again and again!

Class acts are for NASCAR? Then why are the Busch Brothers there? Makes perfect sense to me!

Sammy is one of the greatest, but there were many times he couldn't touch the real king of true racing. Let's see, what was that guy's name??? I think it might have been Dennis????

After a great A main of great driving by all drivers for 55 laps and Sammy running second to his son, the checkered flags wave and Sammy gives a fellow competitor the middle Finger ! What c'mon if he thought he was held up or what not sure because Kevin made it through the traffic. Just surprised that this occurred, would think he should be happy that a son and father finish 1 and 2. Both are excellent drives but lost some respect for Sammy after that.

Like flipping off another driver has never happened before....give me a break. Hell, just the other day there was a photo posted of one driver flipping off two drivers behind him and everyone thought it was funny as hell. The below photo of a driver flipping off an guy in the infield and again it was funny. Now Sammy does it and it is terrible. Give me a break.

Not funny....drivers a jerk, fans a jerk....not funny.....GIVE ME A BREAK!

My thoughts exactly. Who gives a rats ass if Sammy flipped someone off. I've seen Hundreds of so-called GROWN UPS in the stands do the very thing to a driver after winning a race.

SkagitsTrueOutlaw25, you are exactly right! Sammy was LAPPING the jerk and trying to win the race. Not sure I would have JUST flipped him off, I think I would have had a little "talk" with him after, also! Unfortunately, you see this ALL the time when being lapped some jerk decides to RACE the leaders!! Give me a break! Let them pass you and THEN fall in behind and see if you can LEARN something from them!!!

The "jerk" and "dumbass" who couldn't control his car was one of the best in the business... Brad Kuhn. Who showed plenty of talent after getting wrecked in his heat on qualifying night by starting in the back of his C...transferring, starting in the back of his B...transferring, and then running through the field to finish 4th or 5th on his qual night. On the incident he was in front of Sammy and Sammy ran over his tire when he had a run on the outside. A complete racing deal and at no fault of Brad Kuhn. The person who could see it coming was Sammy and could have avoided it by not sticking his nose where there wasn't going to be room. I'm also sure Kuhn couldn't give a $h!+ about Sammy's finger or Sammy running him up the track after the race as evident by him bumping Sammy right back and pushing him into the pits. And i'm sure he would have welcomed Sammy to visit his pit and discuss the incident if he had liked.

Sammy shows true emotion after besting 250 something racers (all but 1) & he lost your respect? Are our standards a little high? lol It sure takes a lot to impress some folks! As for whomever he flipped off... even great ones make mistakes (whoever made him mad) & if you're in the A at the Chili Bowl... you're pretty good. It wasn't a great time to get in the way or inconvenience the lead lap cars a bit... but life goes on. It's a tight, small track & everything doesn't go your way nonstop. He was frustrated & showed it. One brief moment of not being a total gentleman & being real. Lots of worse things in life than that considering no one was hurt physically. It's a real shame he didn't wave and say "my bad" or "thank you anyway, friend". How dare him!

Why are you people getting your lil' panties in wad over this? Big deal, Sammy flips off some lapper at the biggest race of the year. Brad Kuhn may be among the best in the business(meh).........Sammy is among the best of all time. As for flipping the bird at another driver on the track, I am quite certain it pales in comparison to non-Sammy fans flipping him the bird as he pulled into victory lane over the years. Total non-issue

I honestly don't have a problem with Sammy flipping someone off, I have enjoyed flipping him off when he has pulled his crap antics over the years. Like for instance when he attempted to plant Jon Allard in the front stretch wall at Tulare back in the spring during their WoO heat race. It was a complete chicken shit move that warranted plenty of Sammy Salutes. He may be a winner but he can be a dirty competitor in my opinion.
Cheers!

Classic.... Thinking someone in their 50's and still passionate about winning races is going to grow up. Sammy is a living legend in open wheel dirt cars. Love him or hate him but appreciate the show while you can..

EXCELLENT POST!!

"Love him or hate him but appreciate the show while you can.." We ALL better learn to appreciate not only Sammy but Steve as well. I've been watching open wheel racing for almost 50 years and these two are the reason WHY I still love going to the track. There are a few characters still racing but almost all the other characters are gone and replace by corporate types.

Once Steve and Sammy are gone, open wheel racing will not be the same for me.

Yes it was Brad's fault. He was supposed to recognize the sound of Sammy's motor and get completely out of his way. (sarcasm)

Funny, all this discussion about Sammy's conduct, and not one mention of Brady Bacon's conduct in the B-Main. Conduct, I might add, that seemed to be endorsed by the announcer when he said, "You don't mess with the kid from OOOOOOKLAHOMA!!" In the end, who cares. I would rather see some hand gestures than guys tearing up another's equipment.
