This is the same road the 2bbl sprints went down and it's a dangerous road.

1987. 100" 2bbl 350's on the 1/4 mile. Stock HEI ignition. Flat tappet cams, flat top pistons, stock block, heads, rods, & crank. Everyone was super pumped. Anyone will be able to build a killer motor for next to nothing. Plenty of parts and parts are cheap. People winning races with what most people would consider junk. Carbs were mostly stock or crude modifications were done.

1988. We gotta have better crank & rods. This stock stuff is junk and everyone is blowing up motors because of stock rods and cranks. Nevermind that no one could figure out how to keep the motors cool. 260 degress was common at the end of a race.

1990. Now we're on the 1/2 mile. Same rules and motors. People spending $2,000 on 492 heads (legal), buying new pink rods from the dealerships running them 1/2 season and replacing. New steel stock cranks from dealership. Hello, Braswell. Now this cheap class is not so cheap anymore, but still not too bad.

1991-1998?. Aftermarket crank and rods are now legal. Must be a sportsman crank and rod and stock stroke and length. Aftermarket coils now creep in. Mags ok during some of these years. During this time rules stayed relatively the same. Costs went up every year due to the latest and greatest intakes, oil pans, carbs, cams etc... For the most part everyone is happy with the way things are going. Good car counts in both OKC & Tulsa.

1998-2000. 100' cars are gone around this time. Now it's 2bbl sprints. 360 cubic inch limit. Same rules.

2002. These sprints cars hook up so much better than the old junkie 100" cars that we are going to have to start letting people run good cranks and rods! No one can afford to blow up 2 motors a year! Let us build one good motor that will last several years and everyone will save money. Lots of heated meetings. The have's wanted it, the have not's didn't. In the end, it was taken out of the racers hands and the promotor made the call of any steel crank and rods ( any stroke combo was fine), and any roller cam. Still 360 cubic". This is the point where the class that had been around for 15 years started its down fall. Motor costs went thru the roof. RPM's went from 7,200-,7,800 to 7,800-8,400. Stock stuff would not keep up. Vertex magneto ignition was the norm.

2011. $20,000-$25,000 2bbl motors. MSD iginition. Ultra light cranks, rods, & pistons. Class is struggling. Costs have severely lowered car counts and the descrepancy between the have's and have not's is huge.

Look how long it took this class to get to where it is today. 25 years. Look how much faster the Sport mod class is progressing than the 2bbl's. It won't be long before this cheap class will be doomed.

Silver Fox # 14 it couldnt have been put any better. I like the crate motor idea the best, get the RPM down it will get the cost down. Then its all in setup and driver.

I agree with everything KBjr said as well.

I couldn't agree more. We as racers are our own worst enemies. Always wanting more. I personally think this sportmod deal was the best thing going and that is what draws the guys with money to that class. When this class started it grew to good car counts. Good car counts turn into big shows for good money. That's when the big money guys see the opportunity to get in a cheaper car and run for decent money. Then they want better stuff because they can afford it. Soon car counts will dwindle because the original guys that started the class can't afford to run in it anymore. I have a nice sportmod for sale right now. It has new deck and new body. Needs motor, trans, driveshaft, radiator, and seat belts, and rear gear. Maybe a few more minor items. 4500$.

If this class gets much more out of hand or they go to a crate motor around here I will have 2 for sale.

Hea I am in the same boat as you but with the e sprint. I see that class looking like what Silver posted real quick if rules are not inforced hard.

Rules had already changed from one year to the next making me think about how guys could spend more money.

What Silver Fox #14 said has happened to all of the "entry level classes" at these tracks around Oklahoma. If I were a track promoter I would lock in the rules for all classes for 5 years (except for safety rules). This way racers could buy parts and they would know exactly how long they can run them. And I would tech the hell out the fast guys to keep them honest. When the five years expired I would only change a couple of small things if needed at all. Just my opinion.

Again KB Jr. speaks wisely , The Champ Sprint deal is to far gone in motor costs and not sure how you fix it and really don't believe you can till the vicious cycle of the class runs itself out and then you start another class if there are any race tracks left to run at.

Hope they can figure out how to keep the Sport Mods cost down, but I will believe it when I see it , be just like everything else , rule changes , need to turn more RPM's and go faster and let the spending spree begin.
