Pong,
That's definitely welcome news. A WHOLE LOT better than the news I was hearing when I left the track last night. Hopefully he won't need any additional surgeries.

That is good news Erin. I am hoping for a speedy recovery. When they got him out of the car it did not look very good for his ankle. I do have to say though he was helping them help him out of the car and seeing the way it looked knew it had to hurt. One tough guy right there. Glad to here they were able to do it with one surgery.

This is terrible and devastating news. Fortunately doctors can do amazing things even with the very worst of circumstances. Hoping for good news and a day when Wayne can get back in to a 410.
One other thought. While I've been a sprint car fan for a very long time and believe that I'm fairly knowledgeable, I don't know a lot about the fine workings of a sprint. Why is it that there isn't technology available to protect a driver when a drive line breaks? May be there is and guys aren't using it. If they aren't, then shame on them.
Again I'm hoping for the best....

the drive lines hav a hoop over them but i am sure it all depends on where it breaks and also if the welds or tubes hold the drive line in place. all i know about the configuration

There are steel torque housings that do not shatter like mag. ones. Kevlar covers. I also prefer steel / alum. yolk . In a wreck you never know what happened but a lot of drivers get hurt needlessly by driveline failures.

I also think running a torque tube strap in addition to the drive line hoop is a good combo. The hoop has too much play side to side.

OK...This whole driveline situation has to change...it's time...in the 70's and 80's too many guys got hurt or killed in these cars..back in those days it was primarily the lack of seat design and safety devices..I think we have that deal changed...but, why can't we figure out something better to do for driveline safety...it's really not that complex..someone with fabricating abilities can earn a lot of money figuring out something to stop this deal....
Get well soon!!!

I'm glad Wayne is ok, even though he has some bad injuries. Atleast it was not life threatning or career ending. Wayne will be back on the gas in no time.
From what people have said, Waynes car flipped and that is what broke the rearend/driveline components and caused injury. Don't get me wrong there have been some pretty bad driveline injuries that have exloded and caused injuries as well, most recent Brooke Tatnell. Most of the Outlaw or even the bigger teams across the Country use an aluminum or titanium/steel mixture u-joint to keep the rotating weight as light as possible (1 lb. rotating weight equal to 5 hp). While they do make sheilds and wraps to prevent injury not many drivers/teams use them for different reasons. Most of all the teams that use these u-joints change them around every 10 races as to prevent them from failing and causing injury and/or damage, remember the fuel pump and steering pump is right above the torque ball housing. Todays motors are putting out huge hp numbers as well as monster torque so that also plays into how many u-joint failures we see.
Until sanctioning bodies make it madatory, teams/drivers will continue to save weight (where it counts) and use what parts and pieces they like.
The older I get, the faster I used to be.

The Dr. was just in. Wayne will have to have a second surgery, probably on Wednesday, to clean out the open wounds. The ankle reconstruction went well though and we're hopeful for a 100% recovery in time.
Wayne and I are also hoping the best for Travis and Tyson and praying for them and their families.

Between my two favorite forms of racing (Sprint cars, NHRA) they're getting a bad rap lately!
I agree that these housing's need to be mandatory. If everyone has to have it then everyone will have to deal with the extra weight. Way to many drivers over the last few years getting taken out by something that can be stopped.
I hope Wayne, Travis and Tyson all have a speedy recovery! Stay strong guys!!

P-Hill Posse I will try to say this as nice as I can so hopefully people don't pile on for your last post. But please shut up. I agree that Wayne was injured in the line of duty and Travis was not but it does not make a difference. They both put there lives on the line everytime they strap in to make a living. The are trying to make a living at some thing you go to watch for entertainment. So it doesn't matter if they got hurt playing ping pong we need to support them with prayer and finances. Knowing these two guys they would do it for you.If you don't want to support them because they are racers, do it because it is the right thing to do.
Godspeed Wayne, Travis and Tyson. We are praying for you.

If I was from Pennsylvania or a friend of P-Hill Posse, I'd disclaim him in a flat second...What the hell is wrong with some people anyway?

I'm normally the one in trouble on here.
However, PHP has hit a new "low" with his post.
Wouldn't it be sad if you cut yourself, ran to the ER and found out your insurance doesn't pay for "stupidity on part of insured?"
