Karl and Steve Kinser put together that 1st down tube car in the parking lot at the Pepper Tree Motel.
I was there for half a day shooting what was going on and it came to a 45 minute tape of them swapping parts back and forth from the old car to the new one right up until they rolled it into the trailer. He won the feature that night but the engine almost fried because the opening in the hood was not big enough to cool it. Historic event! It WAS Oct of '86.

I don't know if they every ran the motorcycles on the 1/2 mile track or not, however AMA ran on the S.J. mile track from the late 50's into the 80's which was the AMA 20 mile national held there yearly.. The 20 mile nationals were originally held on the mile at Bay Meadows in San Mateo around 1950 but was later moved to the S.J. mile.. Bay Meadows also held one or two 100 mile (Big Car) races around year 49 or 50, those were the type of cars which are now called the dirt silver crown cars.. I don't remember but think they also may have ran a couple times on the S.J. mile mid century..

Thank you, Keitth
Keith,
I know I have one from Bruce from Baylands where you're on it. I think it's a weekly show where Gurney wins and Ulyate offers him the ride in the 3db for the rest of the year in front of the fans.
Bruce,
You are the man! The money is in the mail - except I lost your address so it's not really.

The memory is still working Buzz. You're right about the GSRA shows being on the half mile. I have a program in front of me from March 8, 1976, it wasn't mine originally but the person that tracked the times lists 101 cars qualifying that day! Fast time. Jimmy Boyd, 24.235.
NARC opened the 1977 season on the half mile at the fairgrounds. I remember it had a wooden gaurdrail on the inside of the track. And the half mile was used for the late season open comp shows in 1976 and 1977.
Damn. Does this offically make me an old fart?

"offic-ally" between you and me...yup! as far as anyone else knows we will just call ourselves "historians".
Got the Petaluma NorCal Challenge Cup. AWESOME! I think I'll recap it on here and do a play by play in print to bring this great race back to life a little. I'll post names and numbers for the guys I recognize, but there are a few that I have no clue. I can't remember that far back either, as I was a 16 year old fan and now pushing the big 40. Out of 29 qualifiers, I had about 25 of them. 4 I had no idea, or there may have been a driver change.
Sorry it took so long Ron That is a Great idea, Theres a few More that will really interest You as Soon as I get Mr Hoppers out coming Your Way. Tech Glitches are normal just slows things up. But Excited with The BCRA Event......Johnny Anderson & Bobby Morrow Compete. Sincerely
