When the price of gasoline goes back up to around $4.00 per gallon, the savings one will experience driving a vehicle 20K plus miles per year that gets 35+miles per gallon versus 10-15mpg will save enough cash to pay cash for several of those older gas guzzler trucks and vehicles.

One will find that the liability insurance on a newer safer vehicle equipped with air bags, roll bars and anti intrusion enforcement is much lower than the older vehicles not so equipped.

Best to get rid of the older, heavy, and less safe vehicles as soon as possible.

My Grandma used to drive into the county seat once a week, church 3 times, town nearby 3 times a week, and mommas on sunday. She measured with a ruler in her model A gas tank.

This was "frugal"

A teenager in OKC with ANY kind of wheels is not "frugal". Want to save money in the long run? Put 'em on a bicycle!

THERE WAS A TIME IN THIS COUNTRY WHEN THE CONSUMER WAS MORE EFFICIENT. NOW WE EXPECT THE TECHNOLOGIES TO MAKE UP THE DIFFERENCE AS WE BECOME LESS EFFICIENT INDIVIDUALS.

IF GAS MILEAGE WERE TO DOUBLE, WE WOULD DRIVE MORE REQUIRING MORE ASPHALT AND RUBBER TO RIDE ON.

THINK I'LL KEEP MY 'OLDER, LESS EFFICIENT VEHICLE AND LET THE POLITICALLY CORRECT NINNIES GET SUCKED INTO THE VORTEX OF SHEEPHERD THINKING.

I agree Brian.

By the way everyone. I received news today that my ex and her hubby purchased the car and the truck will not go to be crushed.

While i don't agree with this totally, I still am thankful they used their heads a little bit in the matter. I don't like the idea of my daughter driving a small car but we saved the truck from destruction.

Amp, you can't be serious.

Dad bought this one for me back in '86. I used to pull an old modified up to OKC with it, (Thanks Bob and Jeff Garnett). Anyway I got a decent job and rebuilt it(as a Blazer) from the groundup with the idea of honoring my Dad, so giving up was never an option. A lot of stupid money was blown on it, but hey........ The geometry for the top comes from a fold out couch. I thought I was gonna get rich with this top, but I found out most Blazer owners were broke just like me! LOL

In the end for me, the family connection is the one thing that pulls me through on a project when I'm exhausted. It is the one component you CANNOT replace.

And somewhere around here I have an "older less efficient" '48 Willys truck that I will use to pull this "Older, less efficient" 6 banger Modified. In fact, I already do, just haven't taken it to a track yet.

This may clear things up for AMP.

Older Chevy Vs. Mini Cooper

Side impact: Chevy hits mini, driver of mini has bumper impression from chevy on side of head.

Mini hits chevy, mini's motor is sitting in drivers compartment and driver of chevy is pissed because the mini dented his door and made it a bit harder to open but he drives away.

Front impact: Chevy hits mini head on: once again motor is sitting in drivers compartment of mini and driver is hospitalized in severe condition, chevy is bent a bit and needs work but will live to see another day, driver has a headache from whiplash and needs an asprin.

Rear impact: Chevy hits mini, mini's axle is now under drivers seat and driver can read the license plate by looking to the right.

Mini hits chevy, Chevy is pissed and wants the mini to pay for a new bumper, mini is hauled away on a wrecker to see a crusher.

Chevy safer than mini!

Gas mileage is not worth getting killed in a fender-bender for a real vehicle. Besides that your figures are way off on being able to go buy several vehicles with the gas savings. One maybe but you dont figure in the higher insurance cost of the mini in that either

Don't ever get hit by a Tractor Trailer, Cement Truck or Locomotive!

Insurance is lower for the newer safer vehicles equipped with air bags, roll bars and anti-intrusion devices.

Savings at today's gas prices equates to $22,000 in 10 years time, or $44,000 should the price of gas go back to $4.80 per gallon.

Unless one desires to donate their hard earned cash to the oil barons of the Middle East, the wise choice is to purchase and drive more efficent less oil dependent vehicles. There are trade offs with everything in life. The older lesser efficient gas guzzlers are coming to the end of their era. Most will be needing complete engine/transmission overhauls soon, and one needs to add that additional cost to the equation as well.

Unless one is moving a small army, hauling heavy equipment for a business, or needing to move trailers, there is not much economical sense in driving around a giant chunk of iron to move one to two people from point A to B.

There will always be a need for heavy non-efficient commercial vehicles to perform commercial industrial jobs, they are no longer economical for basic commuter transportation.

1999 to 2000 Gas Guzzling V8 Trucks, SUVs and Vans with around 130,000-140,000 miles are listed for $1,500 to $3,000 on Craigslist every day. If one saved up their cash from 10 years of gas savings, by driving a fuel efficient vehicle, one could buy ten of them.

You keep on doing what your doing and we'll keep on doing what we're doing. The choice is all of ours. I fear that people thinking like you will drive us all into no choices.

Your exactly right!! Don't ever get hit by a tractor trailer, cement truck, or locamotive in one of those rolling coffins. There won't even be enough left of you to id. At least in a pickup or something you have a chance. And if your talking about ten years of fuel savings then by that time you would have to buy a new mini because it would be worn out so there goes ur savings idea. Also we are talking about what sounds like a truck that is in good condition, not the crap you can buy for 1500 bucks on craigslist. I damn sure wouldn't let my '71 chevy go for anywhere close to that.

Mini Cooper---BMW

Have you ever paid the labor costs or the parts costs on these foriegn cars?

Full coverage insurance instead of liability

Interest paid in ON TOP of the existing car loan

The true total worth of said car LOST as it depreciates before it is time to sell that car---When the truck is going to lose it's value much slower in relation to the initial cost to the poster of this thread.

Deduct those costs from the 'savings' of fuel mileage.

------------------------------------------------

No need to talk about the 'carbon footprint', the truck already has it factored in and it will take a very long time to match the carbon footprint it takes to build one Mini-Cooper now and put it on the road.

CASH FOR CLUNKERS IS TRULY ABOUT GENERATING CAR SALES, PURE AND SIMPLE.

I build OE Michelin tires and BF Goodrich too, car sales put food on my table. But when it comes to a Dad giving their kid a vehicle that should mean something, I'm cool wit dat.

The Cash for clunkers is just a "Green Gimmik" to make the tree huggers feel they voted for the right man..

No one in there right mind would trade in such a sweet ride as you described.

As someone else said : GO GET THE TITLE AND KEYS man !!

Tell your daughter she can keep on driving it and if they are really that well employed, they can afford to finance a new car for her in the first place.

I think your X is attacking the "Daddy built this truck just foe me" notion and the memories it has and hopefully will continue to produce.

This pissed me off a little to, and hell I was all ready mad ! LOL Lets get a covert RE-PO team together and plan a rescue mission.....!! LOL

I do apprecate it Mad Mike. The truck is gonna stay. They went and got her the little coffin anyway. Much to my dismay. I had a talk with her again about safe driving and that she will have to be extra careful in a car that she can't down the road in and is so small that her life is at stake any time anywhere. I'm very concerned about this safety issue. I don't care if it has air bags in the roof, doors, windows, dash, or seats. It could be crushed easily. The side roads are a huge concern. I don't think the intersections are maintained, as far as trees and shrubs go anyway, to be conducive to safe driving. Little car will be hard to see in some instances.

Thanks for your post. It's exactly what I thought.

Thanks to everyone.

Dale

My daughter has a Hyundai Accent which is about the size of the Cooper. I honestly think it's made her a better driver. She's told me since shes' had the car she become alot more aware of things around her. She claims its made her a safer/better driver. She says that she really watches out for the 'other guy'. Hopefully your daughter will heed your advice about safe driving.

No matter how old they get.....you never stop worrying about them.
