Thats freekin' cool Brewer! Put old school scalops on it and put a name on it like Brewer Special. Morgan is going to debut her non wing car March.

One of the things I love about discussions of the "old days" is the way we find out what a small world it REALLY is and how much we ALL have in common. Never knew you were from SoCal Bucky. Looks like we were probably "neighbors", well sort-of.

Yeah, I was born in Los Angeles and lived in Montebello and Monterrey Park and then in Chino from 6th grade thru high school.

I also got to see some racing at Inyo/Kern County Speedway and the Corona/Norco Speedway. Racing was pretty much dead until Don Kazarian revived the Perris Auto Speedway at the Lake Perris Fairgrounds.

"The PAS", as they call it is a pretty cool track. It's a big fast half mile with progressive banking. The most unique feature of the track is the raised back stretch, 4 feet higher than the front, and the sunken pits, 4 feet lower than the front straightaway. With the pits being 8 feet below the back stretch, it makes it possible to see over 18 wheel race rigs in the pits. Cool....

Perris has wingless USAC/CRA Sprints on the weekly show. 410 without a wing is pretty cool.

It's not HOW fast you go, but how you GO fast.

Kind of looks like an Offy in that thing!? I guess we will see at the Chili Bowl

That's pretty cool Cody. You should just cut the roll cage off and the seat belts out and you'd have a real race car on your hands.

Great minds think alike Greg! I cant tell you everything, but the scallops are already in the works and she already has a name! Is Morgan going to run the non-wing class?

I am already going without the arm guard Jennings! I am doing this deal in baby steps! Haha!

Can't wait to see it at the Chili Bowl! I bet it gets alot of attention. Yeah Morgan is moving up to non wing this year. I figure she may as well go now and start logging some laps. This way, if she ever gets the chance to drive a midget or sprint when shes 16, she will have 3 full years of non wing experience. This will be her biggest test yet, thats for sure. My son Matt is going to race full time next year too. PS We need a 2 barrel NON Wing Sprint class at SFS!!!

Wow what a great car, you might like this link..http://www.b2-design.biz/Racing/bogan_racers.htm

OK, moved to Torrance from Indy as a infant. My dad ran mostly Midgets back there after the war so I grew up at old Carrell speedway and Western in Cali. Then later on it was off to Phoenix and Manzanita and the big cars at the Fairgrounds..Then back to Cali in 63 and Ascot was where you had to be on Saturday night! Off to the Pacific Northwest in 74 and then it was Skagit, Portland Speedway, Cottage Grove..etc Back to N.M, Duke City and then Phoenix in 85. Mazanita and Canyon Raceway and that meant CRA, SCRA, ASCA, ASCO and the slick 50 deal and the gathering of the clan at PIR, the Copper Classic. So ya think I just might be a old school, non wing kind a guy? LOL

Of course we had some great super mods back in the day at Manzy, Skagit and Ascot, in fact the whole left side had some beautiful supers. That could include you guys as well. No, not the left side, the super mods..LOL

Perri's is a small 1/2 mile, especially if you compare it to Manzy. Some say it's closer to a 3/8, while Manzy is closer to 5/8 around the top, the fast way around. In my opinion they play way to much "bumper cars" at Perri's, and that's because they can..LOL You can't play like that at Manzy, the consequences are to high. You can see in this video just how fast Manzy is, and what the consequences are that I'm talking about. I had to put the link on because the embedded device is shut off of this particular video for some reason.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZqGbrj87Jk

KOP, I'll see you at the Copper on Dirt, Feb 20th.

Kenny

Kenny,

That is a great write up and very ironic! I am very good friends with John Carrol and Ken Hamblin from out in California! I saw where it mentioned them near the end of the article. Last time I stayed at John's house, he broke out his old TQ pictures and told me all about Bob Bogan! There is so much racing history in Southern California!

Then you will love this. It starts with a shot of Old Carrell from the air and can you believe how neatly those cars are parked? Be sure and check out the slide show. http://www.fototime.com/ftweb/bin/ft.dll/detailfs?userid=161BD2CFC5CD446BB028586AF136C181&ndx=1&albumid=4237A067DAE841618CCBF3F378322CD4&pictureid=BCCDAB2B892A45118D35FD705F77C262

Years later my dad showed me where you could still see the outline of where the turns had been. We were on Artesia Blvd and going right through what would have been the middle of the track.

This is the John Siroonian "Western Mag Special". This car has time and time again been selected as the best looking sprint car to ever sit on a race track. Drivers have included Jimmy Boyd (pictured), Leland McSpadden and Ron Shuman just to name a few.

This pic was taken at Ascot Park. The car to the outside with the orange helmet on the hood is the #98jr owned by J.C. Agajanian. The driver of the car that day..............Shane Carson.

I was googling my fathers name and ran across this blog about our sprint car. I completely agree I think it was a great looking car and your blog brought a smile to my face. Thanks!!

I can tell you get engine costs down and increase purse in the area then you would see an influx of non wing cars.

Yeup cut the power cost while not cutting competition and it will be a big class. We think Mark Brill is onto something with his limited sprint car class.

This thing will work with limited's as long as the spectator will feel that it is a "real" sprint car because that is who we must please.

Really got to shake my head at the direction of chatter for what we need for sprint cars. We replaced 100" cars for 410 sprints. Then we (ASCS) went to 360 injected and then to 360 2 barrel (OCRA / OCRS). Now we are talking about this "extremely limited" class of sprints?

This is the wrong direction folks. We WILL NOT get fans who aren't family members and/or friends of such a class to come watch this. Hell, its a struggle to get fans to come out now with the upper classes we currently have. ALL OF THEM! You might get back gate $$$, but not front gate money.

Whats the next direction? Six cylinder sprints?

John there used to be 10 thousand plus people that came to the Tulsa Fairgrounds to watch what you would now be called a limited motor. I do not think what you are saying hold water.....about like these 20 thousand dollar motors when they blow up.

What we can do is think a strong running V8 and I am not really for a small carb class more like fuel injected with a limited motor and some kind of chip where it wouldnt rev over 7000 rpm.

oh yah and back to yah I agree it is hard enuff to spectators to an ASCS Regional Race or an NCRA.

But maybe it is time to slow em down some, reduce the costs, and make and keep them more affordable to build and maintain. Or we can keep seeing numbers dwindle and there will be no local sprint car show.

Ed:

That was in the early 80's as well as the 60's/70's when he crowds were that large. That all went away in the mid 80's when the track moved north of town. Then there were crowds of 3000-4000. Numbers dropped like a hot rock. Money had no relevancy then.

While we might not agree exactly what to do, I just don't believe you can keep slowing the cars down for the sake of just doing it. What will a promoter pay to win an economy class of 30-35 cars? Mini stock money? or $400? $500? Then $50 - $75 to start? That's going backwards. Teams not ready to go OCRS or ASCS racing due to competition have places to race. There's Creek, Brill and Lawton. Most of those teams have equipment thats as low of a budget as it gets now. So we would have them trade nickles for pennies?

What I'm trying to say is sprint car fans are NOT people you can pull a sheet over their eyes. The majority of the 410 fans still havent come back. Do we want to risk running the others away? If the trend was to choke the motors down so much we basically have pure stock motors in them, you wont see sprint car fans come back.

As mentioned before, you will get the family and friends of such drivers (much like the full body classes), but you wont get the fan that sits at home looking for somewhere to go. They wont see any value in that kind of class. What we need to be doing is working on the structure we have now (Injected and carbed 360's) and not do anything that will cut into their numbers and water down its field just to be replaced by a weaker class of car. With the utmost respect to you as a professional in our industry, what you seem to be indicating will do just that.
