I remember when my uncle used to pull his car to Tulsa Speedway in the late 60's,with a tow bar, instead of a trailer. This day and time,a guy wouldn't know what to do without a trailer with a whole garage packed in it.

Who was your uncle? I remember one time in Great Bend (I think) a guy's car coming unhitched, rolling across the centerline and causing a serious accident.

This is where Air Capital Speedway was on West Kellogg in Wichita.

Great Pictures! I'm new here and bouncing on sites and came across this. My Grandpa was killed at Air Capital Speedway . His name was Lee Smith and was subbing for my Dad who was sent to Vietnam. Another racer was killed that night as well. Anyways, just kind of a cool picture that takes me back to that time.

Thank you......

I was there that night very strange night, just did not feel right from the start. Shorty Burkholder also got killed that night in the Stockwell Offy. Harry Ivers told me what happened to the Smith car. Cotton Musik was driving Chet's car first time he had been in a car in years but set fast time, so he got payed for the feature win when they cancelled the races.

If your new and looking at Web-Sites check out the Kansas Antique Racers New Web-Site.

After a great season for the BCRA in 1965, a season in which the club raced at Belleville for the first time, and Wichita driver Grady Wade would win the first of 4 straight titles for the Air Capital City, Wichita was given it's own BCRA race in 1966! Unfortunately this tragedy occurred, the BCRA would never come back, and this promising facility would close before seasons end. Growing up, We would drive by the track from time to time, for several years the grandstand was intact, and I saw Hay burners out on the facality. Ironically these fatalities were the first in BCRA history for the club that started with it's first race in 1958. It would be 10 more years before there would be another fatality in the BCRA in 1976. After that accident which claimed the life of Doug Hjermstad at Belleville, the streak of the BCRA racing at Belleville would end as well. The next season the BCRA, and the IMCA would both take their final checkered flags. Interesting side note, Air Capital raced super modifieds that year, many sprint cars raced there with cages. The season for them came to a premature end, as stated before. If they would have declared a champion, The Petty's have told me, it would have been Jack that would have been declared champion, driving the yellow #6 sprinter, which I believe is still in the Belleville Museum. The car that Lee Smith was killed in was the car that Bruce Budy won Rookie Of The Year honors in BCRA in 1960. It raced in Wichita with wire wheels, which by 1966 was very rare. Shorty Burkholder was driving the Stockwell Offy #3 that night. After the tragedy, Curt continued to own and race sprint cars up until his death in 1974. In 2009 he was inducted into the BCRA Hall Of Fame. Ray C

Thank you guys for the history. I still have the steering wheel and interior from my grandpas car. Harry ivers bought the tandem trailer from my dad for 150 bucks and I believe he still has it. I have some really cool pics of that car. Does anybody know how to contact Harry Ivers?
