Johnny, could you explain how officials determine if a red should become an open red, strictly based in the rule book?

and also why Do they make that decision in  such an early portion of the race based on last nights events?

please!

I know sometimes it is for the teams to keep the tires aired up. Especially if its cold.

I don't believe in conspiracy for sweet.

That race last night was full of odd and bad decisions which just drug the show out. That 2 minute rebuild a car garbage needs to end. If you can fix it in the time to realign the field great, if not too bad

Not sure what "bad" decisions you're talking about. As for teams being permitted to repair their cars in the Federated Car Care Work zone, judging by the applause when the 49 came back onto the track (which I could hear despite being in the booth AND having headphones on), the VAST majority of our fans are happy to see the world's best sprint car drivers return to on track action.

Johnny,

What is the process for deciding a closed red vs open? I was surprised it went open since we were only a few laps in. I am not a conspiracy theorist, it just seemed like an odd time for open.

Macedo, why did the wrecker remain hooked so they could work on the car? Correct me if I am wrong but goodno was still on track and needing a wrecker also?

my butt was sore after setting there for over 5 hours, and I was at home in a soft chair.  I really felt bad for the fans at the races.  We thought at the time the red flag was bull.  This whole fix a car rule needs to be changed.

Agreed, especially the last sentence. Of course if they'd ditch the double file re-starts, most of the red flags wouldn't happen.

We went open red with 3 laps complete based on the number of caution/parade laps we had run and the weather/track/fuel consumption situation.  I don't have the EXACT numbers, but here's a similar hypothetical situation:

Say our number of combined green and yellow laps we can run on a tank of fuel (which can change based on track/weather conditions) is 55.  We run 7 caution laps before the green (based on the first car to push off), then run 3 green flag laps before an accident that requires a red flag. Yes, we only have 3 "official" laps completed, but we only have 45 green/yellow combined remaining in our total. Assuming at least 4 more yellow laps to get everyone pushed off/lined up, we're down to 41, with 27 green flag laps remaining. Since we're already red, why not open it, allow teams to refuel, and reset our total to 55 again?  Another factor last night: the tractor (with a boom arm) that was serving as the second "wrecker" blew a hydraulic line while hooking up to one of the cars involved in the first accident. We now know we only have one wrecker in service, which could potentially extend any future caution periods. So again, why not make the first red open and save caution laps?  Going from a closed red already to an open red "looks" a lot better than going from a yellow to an open (fuel stop) red later in the race.

As for the situation for Macedo, our policy all year has been for teams changing a front axle to be able to work while the car is still hooked to the wrecker. Not fair to the 41 to not permit them the same opportunity that has been afforded to other teams throughout the year. (Yes, I know how it looks, especially with the 21W still on the track, but at that point we're probably not going to look good either way, so we go with what has been done to that point so far in the season.)

Hope that helps a bit.  (I'm sure the people that want to believe otherwise will still do so no matter what I say in online forums/social media.)

Thanks Johnny. You put yourself out there for criticism being in social media but it does help control the emotions here to get it straight from a WoO official.

Do you also have time to help me swap out my summer tires before Charolette? Jk!

Even though I may not know you, I

Exactly. This topic is one of the dumber ones I can ever remember.

How so?   The original poster never said a word about any conspiracy.   He more specifically referred to it as a clown show.

I didn't even watch the race, but as a Gravel fan, I don't like what what I heard

But your explanation seems pretty reasonable

I don't think it was intentional favoritism (but if I was watching, I might have been pissed & thought otherwise)

Thanks

Long events is what hurt baseball. They are still trying to fix games that were to long.

Why would the WoO would want to give an advantage to the guy that is starting up a rival series?

I didn't watch it, What happened?

The WOO-zwes are no longer the greatest show on dirt...been coming on a long time IMO.  If you think they are you need to get out more.  Try The Trophy Cup  show at Tulare some time.  That my friends was the Greatest Show On Dirt, hands down!!!

Ascot was the greatest of all time..

West Capital wasn't half bad either..

Life is good...

I'm guessing no one complaining about the open red has sat in the car through a 20 minute closed red before.  If nothing else, it's nice to know that someone checked the air pressure within the last half hour before sailing into turn 1 wide open on the restart.  Also, with all the cars bouncing off each other in the altercation, it lets the crews check over the cars that stayed right side up.

100 percent correct.  I have been watching the outlaws for over 35 years now.... either at the track and later on - dirt vision.   What they did in both the Sweet and Macedo incidents was nothing out of the normal.

A $H!T SHOW to say the least. Had a family event so didn't think I would be able to watch the last race, which should have been a historic event.
Got back in time to watch the A Mod debacle that went forever. I'm sure they are nice guys but the announcers were so bad. Had to mute it. Close to being timed out because of some many yellows.

The WoO A Main was an embarrassment. Sweat caused a red flag on lap 3 restart, by getting into his car owner #9. What occurred next was unbelievable. Officials make it an open red with only 3 laps into the feature. This gave #49 extra time to rebuild the car. The #9 and #49 should have been finished but the extra time allowed them time to rebuild. It would have been a big point swing as Gravel #2 won and Sweet easily could have finished last but came back for a decent finish.

I find it ironic that the guy with his brother in law is starting the new High Limit/ All Star whatever to replace WoO , was going so crazy to get his car back on the track. Appears the prestige of a WoO Championship means something. The WoO owe him nothing.

They had another open red later because it turns out only ONE tow truck at the event. I can understand running out of cheese because it was the last night forever but not to have the proper staffing to ensure the show runs smoothly is inexcusable. Then the pit reporter makes a comment " yours truly" even helped on a tire change on Goodno car. Goodno was in the back of the race, but why is a WoO staff person helping a car. I'm sure innocent action but not a good look.

The last lap by Gravel was exciting except I'm an #83 fan.

As Gibson said a memorable race but for a lot of the wrong reason.

Doesn't your television have a remote?  Tonight my Vikings play on MNF and as much as I have loved watching them if San Fran starts kicking ass early you can bet the channel will be changed.  If the WoO pissed me off that much I wouldn't watch.
