I have used vertex internal coil mags done my magsarus for years with high compression engines and had no issues. The draw back of the old style is that you can't run a rev limiter or traction control etc..

There is a reason guys have multiple ignition boxes ready to go in the trailer.

If vertex type mags were better every WoO team & any other major sprint car team would be using them.  the problem with them is the points. Nobody wants to deal with the points. The rare earth vertex type mags are even worse as they require a bunch more maintenance.

Considering modern day technology, it seems that a much better mouse trap, ignition system could be developed.  Sounds like a windfall of money to an electrical engineer that can design and market a better one.

I didn't say that they were necessarily better, I said that they can be used with little issue. Msd ignitions do have advantages like a crank trigger, rev limiter and ability to run traction control, etc. But the ignition boxes are a known issue with them.

Ok, was it the driver ?  Or was it the development of a new motor that has the little gremlins keep setting them back ? I don't know.

I have seen and been told about the bad condition magnetos and boxes are in when sent in to be fixed.  The bearings are completely gone and Mag sounds like a combine when you spin it.  Seen them when bearins are so bad the rotor is rubbing on cap.  The plastic connector that connects top have to bottom half is completely shot.  Boxes were full of dirt and magneto and box show signs of water in them.  You should not run these items till they stop,  but of course you would not have any way of knowing the coil was to burn out.

I'm suspecting this team exhibits a lot of frustration once the trailer door is closed. It's got to be getting to them.

Is it just stuff or is it the Ford?

I don't know but Tony must have a lot on the line with Ford to use it if he knows it's the problem.

So why are you always blaming failures strickly to Ford?  Must be a die hard Chevy guy.

Donny didn't have these reliability issues in the Chevy days....

I'm pretty much a "Ford guy" but I've been wondering the same thing as Rod

I don't understand electronic ignition anyway.... on passenger cars, its been shown to be way more reliable than the old points. I wonder why it fails in 15 mile sprint car races????

In fact electronic ignition is about the only electronic thing on cars I really like....my "Check gas cap" & "check engine" lights keep coming on over & over. The car runs just fine. I have lots of faith in my mechanic & he can't figure it out, been there probably 4 or 5 times about this....I'd like to just get rid of the damn "idiot lights"!

Crank triggered ignition is very reliable and have been in American production cars for well over 20 years.

I would mouth off for Chev 30 years ago. Today there are 4 trucks in my yard. Dodge 1 ton. Ford 1 ton. Toyota 1/2 ton and a Honda noneton.

As shared above the biggest variable after almost zero mechanical failures crashes or spins the Ford shows up and so does the trio .

He also has a different crew chief/mechanic.  He hasn't run the same since that.

Guys, we know chevy 410 engine has NO chevy parts in it at all.  The Ford engine has no Ford parts available in a hiway auto.  Ford probably paid for block  and head castings to fit WOO rules.  All other parts are made after market.

True, but he wasn't having DNFs with Chevy and he was still in the hunt for the season championship even if he wasn't in victory lane much.   Right now he's 166 points back thanks to the DNFs.
