As I remember it Gerkin was working with Mark and Karl while Steve was in NASCAR.   I think Gerkin may have been the guy who knew what was going on in Karl's engines, or something like that.   Steve came back to sprint cars, started his own team, and lured Gerkin away from Karl.    I think that's how it went down.   I may have left some things out or gotten one or two things wrong, so someone can correct me if needed.

The story was that Gerkin was the motor guru, while Karl was the Set Up, fabrication, innovative guy. When Steve left Karl to go to to Nascar, Gerkin was still doing the motor stuff for the Kinser team. When Steve came back, he got Gerkin to come with him (essentially taking away the motor guru) from Karl and Mark. Many always gave Karl all the credit for alot of Steve's success early in the days and the move to bring Gerkin with him kind of spearheaded the (who was actually the brains of that operation) debate. Was it Karl or was it Gerkin...because it seemed to be that STeve was saying he didn't need karl and that he needed gerkin. So there was a bit of an ugly family dispute there as Gerkin has been with Karl forever and now he was splitting to go with Steve to kind of make their own path seperate and prove it just wasnt karl

In Central Pa we had the Fred Rahmer vs Jeff Sheppard battle when Jeff won at Lincoln and said Fred Who when the announcers asked about knocking Fred off his throne at Lincoln as he'd been dominating at the track that season. Was a fun one for quite a while.

Steve felt he was the reason the 11 car was great. Karl felt without him steve wouldn't be were he was. If karl was pissed at steve or he wrecked the car you could see the tension between the 2. When steve came back to the outlaws I don't know if he and team 11 ever had a conversation. Yes he lured  Scott Gerkin away from Karl and that pretty much ended it.

Good times indeed, Lance and Joe Harz even got into the act. Sure was fun , hard to believe it was over 20 years ago. Lynn Schaeffer's (sp)  '99 thunder in the mountains video  captures some good racing and some fun interviews.
