Speaking for myself I also know the gremlins faced while streaming from a facility. A lot of tracks cant justify the cost of a hard line internet and some use satellite with a monthly limit. Even with a hard line a lot of providers limit upload speed so people can download movies. Some times I have relied on Jet Packs to get the signal out. We check for a minimum upload speed prior to any event. Problem is once all the fans show up it eats into the speed. The end result is the stream could drop after the 4 wide or parade lap because everyone wants to upload a picture or video all at once. I would rather lower my broadcast quality a bit to not risk an all out drop. Over time equipment is getting better. Remember that year no one could use cell phones at Knoxville during Nationals week?

I would say the answer for someone wanting to establish a for-profit business entity in offering streaming would be to invest in a dedicated and/or prioritized internet connection so as to not worry about this or make excuses about connectivity.

DV has (or had) this with their production trailer's VSAT connection, which again kind of surprised me given Flo's response earlier of sharing resources. Maybe DV was renting Flo a connection on it or something.

i think there is a bunch of spoiled whiney babies here. my picture was fine. only thing that bothered me was during the dash , when the camera just followed the leader while there was an epic battle going on behind him that we could not see. Overall i was very happy with it

Guess you can throw Lance DeWease and Logan Wagner in with all of us spoiled whiney babies. Both commented on it via twitter and LD was particularly outspoken.  So yeah, it wasn't good at all.  Kudos to the GM for coming here and commenting.

Hey all,

Really appreciate the feedback/criticism, etc. etc. Much of it is warranted.

Many of you may not know me ... but my name is Michael Rigsby, and I'm the new GM of Flo Racing. I was the owner and operator of DirtonDirt.com for 13 years, and if any of you are late model fans you know that our track record at DoD was sparkling, and whether it was the World 100, Knoxville Late Model Nationals, the Dream, the Gateway Dirt Nationals, or over 300 other LIVE events, we built a hell of a reputation as one of the best streaming platforms in the United States.

Now I have a new challenge with FloRacing, but one I'm very much looking forward to tackling. From USAC to the All-Stars ... to Tony trusting us with Eldora, we are beyond excited.

No doubt ... the first 2 nights of Volusia weren't perfect. Not only are we facing some challenges with a split broadcast with Dirtvision (We thank them for allowing us to broadcast the All-Stars at their venue by the way), but with limited connectivitry on site, and a number of other "gremlins" ... things weren't perfect. Many of those gremlins forced us to lower the quality a bit to ensure the stream was able to "go out" ... but we still had some glitches no doubt. That would explain the "picture quality" issue many of you experienced.

That also affected our ability to roll all the filler content that we did on Wednesday night. It was alot happening at once, but more "circumstance" than anything.

There isn't a human being on the planet who's more critical of his own work and his team's work than me. I built DoD to over 20 employees that way, and am working to do the same thing now at FloRacing.

Trust me ... we will get there. I won't allow it happening ANY other way. We will do in sprint car racing what we did in late model racing. I'm not naive ... there are many challenges we have to improve on like customer support, quality, etc. But this will end up where we want it. That I know.

I'm looking forward to East Bay Monday and getting right back on the horse.

If any of you have any questions you can email me directly .... [email protected] ... I'm an open book and you can reach me there.

Thanks all, and I look forward to being very involved in sprint car racing this year and in the future.

GM of FloRacing

Thanks for the service update Michael.  I'm pleased with the content and the broadcast was watchable in spite of the glitches and never locked up completely.  I understand the challenges of streaming from these tracks and know a few people involved in streaming services and have discussed some of these issues with them to get a better understanding.

As long as you're aware of the situation and working towards improving the product I'm fine with a few bumps in the road.  Somebody asked about broadcast quality and mine wasn't good so I weighed in on it.  I live near the Cedar Lake Speedway and consider it my home track so I am familiar with DirtonDirt.

Some would suggest that we should be content with inferior quality due to the subject matter being dirt track racing.  I guess there are two sides to that coin but everything else I watch is tack sharp high resolution and that is what consumers expect today.  Somehow to suggest we should accept 1990's quality at Netflix and Amazon Prime prices just because it's racing doesn't compute with my non-race-fan wife and bill payer.  One has to be invested in racing like I am to cut these broadcasts some slack on things like resolution and buffering but that thinking is limited to hard core racing fans and not based on the reality of the quality necessary to succeed in today's marketplace.

So I've got Flo USAC secondary to WoO DV tonight and the Flo picture is much, much improved - probably a true 720p if I had to guess.

Hey all,

We discovered an issue with some software in a BRAND NEW piece of equipment that went out. Couple that with the low connectivity at Volusia, and you got that "blurred" effect last night.

INCREDIBLY frustrating. Trust me.

We've diagnosed, and on the All-Star front are looking forward to East Bay next week. Meanwhile enjoy Ocala and USAC tonight.

Thanks all. We're digging hard.

I just started watching tonite (Fri.) & don't have any complaints about the picture.

But someone pointed out that you have to watch what the camera focuses on. Thats the trouble with all racing on PPV or TV.

Lets face it, it can never even come close to live.... can't switch attention back & forth to different battles in the pack, no sounds & smells of methanol, etc.... but at least its warm inside, & obviously a lot of us can't make it to Florida right now.
I watched highlites of last nites Allstar race, which seemed really good up front, but i really wish I could have seen Larson & Schatz fighting their way thru the pack

Oh well.....

I know exactly what you're talking about. There were times when you knew that spots 2, 3, and 4th were going at it behind the leader, but they were on the leader so tight, it was as if you're looking at just the leader through an empty toilet paper roll. Early on last year, the announcers could be heard just fine at one track, but you could barely hear the cars, even during qualifying. I mentioned it on Flo's Facebook page only because I've watched enough streams to know they had completely forgotten about the importance of the sound coming from the track. I know the sound is sketchy at times depending on the track, but this was as close as you can get to having no sound at all. The sounds coming from the track were not a problem for the rest of the year. Do I think that because I mentioned it on their Facebook page, with others agreeing made a difference? Hell, I don't know.

Half the lies they tell about me aren't true.

Service sucks at Volusia, even DIRTVision wasn't at its best tonight. Guaranteed Rigsby will take flo racing you the next level. DirtonDirt is probably the best dirt racing subscription website in the game...

Hey Dtfl125, DIRTVision pushes out a strong feed every night, regardless of service at the facility, so if you ever feel like your quality is degraded, shoot us an email ([email protected]) and we can help fix, or at least diagnose, little quirks that your device/internet may be experiencing. Hope you enjoyed the show tonight!

I watched parts of the TT and Heats and the USAC Midget Feature last night and the quality of the broadcast was good.  After the Midgets I flipped over to MAVTV and watched an epic last four laps of the Late Model Feature.  Like I said, resolution is important to me but I can't lose sight of how far TV has come in my lifetime.  In 1960 there was no internet, three black & white channels that went off at midnight and we had to go to the races to see a race and wait for NSSN to come in the mail to check out results.  No complaints, it has never been this easy to follow racing.  On the flip side 68 year old eyes need all the resolution they have to offer so I'm always going to favor 1080p or better yet 4k and whatever improvements come along.  Not that full HD is a necessity but I like my TV to be like a fine looking woman, easy on the eyes.

Hey, we're not demanding 4k but would have been happy with something approaching 720p.  That's not being an whiney baby, 720p was introduced to the market in 1998.  We're not exactly demanding perfection, just looking to boost it up to a 22 year old broadcast standard.  Anything lower than that I'd have been challenged to make out the car numbers at my age.  I get PPV mostly because I have a harder time making those late night drives through deer country.  If my eyes were that good that I can make out those fuzzy graphics I'd go back to chasing races.  LOL

Thanks.  I have no regrets about being high mileage.  I have watched the non-winged cageless cars of the 60's up to and including what's out there today.  It's kind of ironic that the old guy would prefer his racing in 1080p and 4k and someone younger would be happy with what amounted to 480p.  It's usually the other way around where us old folks are watching some old 90's tube TV with a digital converter box and the younger ones think we're clueless.  In this case I'm the one arguing the merits of current technology and you're defending a fuzzy picture.  wink
