Yeah but Earl had the Royal and The Big One within the same year. Bad purse or not, i'm guessing the drivers would like to have that one back on the schedule.

I think the timing of the Big One was not good too.  It was always a week before the Knoxville Nationals.

I just wish they'd hire some bands for that big beautiful dance hall next to the track.... now THAT would be an extravaganza! Smile

I understand paying well through the field. You ll get more cars but a big step between positions will entice a driver to make one more pass to gain more prize money. It is racing and there needs to be something worth passing for instead of just finishing a race .   Too much of one will only bring the few who actually have a shot at winning. Too much of the other and you have a mobile car show. Put something up to race for and let's see them go hard trying to win it.

Haha that's funny Rod. I think we are a long way off from that happening in Sprint car racing. The way the position payout works in all events, even the Knoxville Nationals which is the best paying event, every position matters in terms of money.  Basically the words, "ahh I could try to move up, but where I am pays well enough too."

Well start and parks are an indication that last is ok as long as the cheque doesn't bounce. Cheque is like check eh!

Have there been any start and parks in sprint car racing?  I haven't heard of any but that's not to say there hasn't been.

Both of the Shark cars at Bubba this year. However, it was an All-star race and the conditions were a bit ugly.

Long overdue?!  While the winners share has stayed the same, the purse certainly has not.  2 years ago they put over $100k into the purse from 2nd on back.

Adjusted for inflation, 50k in 1984 is 125k in 2019. When your 50/50 winner wins more than the Kings Royal champion, it’s long overdue for an increase in winners share.

I know the track side of the event is a business and even the cars are more business than pleasure but I'm just trying to point out we still call it racing. The definition of racing seems to imply there needs to be incentive to move forward and not be content with the position  you have.  I see both sides of this discussion. At the end of the night I mention to my friends how many cars attended but I talk about the lead swaps and all out get to the front mentality more than the numbers. I prefer to watch battles for position, even if its 6th place more than a crowded pit area.

Makes perfect sense to me, & I think everybody knows that. The trick is finding the balance between increased incentive to pass & giving slower teams a fair deal

Yuuuup, exactly. If I was making the same money today that I was making in 1984 while the costs of living (racing) had gone up, I think I'd be a little miffed to say the least.

Depends on how you look at it.  While the historical big one paid 100k to win years ago, I don't think it made as much money for the track (can't really remember the reasoning Earl gave in his book).

I actually prefer what Eldora did a few years ago and added money throughout the field rather than just adding to the winners share. I remember last year everyone talking about SCWC being a better paying race but in all actuality, it only paid more for 1 spot than the Kings Royal, 1st. Both races paid 20k for 2nd and every spot down the Kings Royal paid more per position.

I'm glad to have both races in my area and they are great races. But it is funny how sometimes we associate how good the payout is just based on winners share, when it should be based overall

I think the attendance was down for the big one because it was only a couple weeks after the kings royal and everybody blew their wad at the royal.

I thought the attendance was low because Kville was just a few days later and folks were saving up their beer.
