Mental note. Getting to the nationals is WAS on my bucket list. My 10 year old daughter likes to go with me and I would have for sure brougut her, but if that is the type of behavior permitted well then.......

As someone who has attended every Knoxville Nationals since the early 1980's, I can say that is not typical of the Knoxville Nationals crowd.   Anytime that you have 25,000 people in one place there are always going to be some real lowlifes, such as these guys.  However, the vast majority of the people there either do not drink or know how to drink responsibly.

Hopefully, Knoxville Raceway permanently banned the scumbags involved.

You can't smoke because of a STATE LAW, Knoxville Raceway didn't pass the law, the moronic state legistlators did.

For the record, I am not a smoker. I never had an issue with people smoking around me in the stands prior to the enactment of the law by the legislature. Most of the smokers would get up, go down and smoke even when you could smoke in the grandstands.

Drunks will ALWAYS be a problem as the ones that are wayy over the limit aren't the ones that are purchasing it, their buddies are going down and getting it for them. Having more staff or a sheriff at the beer stand will do NOTHING to curb excessive drinking. I know groups where only the DD goes down to the beerstand and buys for the entire group. Having a cop there to police people who've been "overserved" will do nothing to fix these situations.

That is a GREAT law.  Hopefully, more states enact it.

+1

Me and my son attend central PA tracks, and were looking to "get off the porch".

Was just starting to plan next year to go to Knoxville, but I think Charlotte World Finals just won.

Been going to Nationals for over 30 years starting when I was 5 or so.  Now I take my own young kids.  Never had a problem with a drunk in the stands... EVER!  To not go to Knoxville because of one horror story about 3 douchebags would be a huge mistake... and a missed opportunity to bond for a long weekend with your son/daughter.

Let's think about the options.  Charlotte, 2 nights, about 24 cars, no history, no sights, no passing, and from what I've heard some of the most boring sprint car racing you will ever see.... versus... as many nights as you want (up to 10) hundreds of cars, the mecca of spring car racing, the history, the sights, the atmosphere.

I agree. I don't drink anymore, but the people around me were drinking plenty of beer & just got more talkative, no problem. Most people there are pretty mellow. Nothing at all like a REAL rowdy crowd

Ever hang out at a bar in a mining town? Now that gets crazy....

Don't panic.....

Agree with Jamie and others... think it would be a mistake to skip the Nationals because of the 'jackassery' of 3 guys in one incident.  Same as Jamie, this will be my 31st Nationals (starting when I was 3) - and I've also never seen anything as crazy (and likely overpublicized) as this.  It seems that security has been stepped up since this happened 2 yrs ago, which isn't a bad thing.

It's the same group of FD guys, from Sweet Springs, every year. I'm about 9 miles from SS. The same EXACT thing happened last year & they were supposed to be corrected by their Department when they made it home. Appears nothing happened & they are off to a fine start again this year. And yes, they only go to real races these 10 days.

The Nationals are a fabulous show. Getting that out of the way up front, your post is really obvious that you have never been to the World Finals. The World Finals are one of the best shows of the year anywhere IMO with Sprint Cars, Late Models and DIRT Modifieds all on the bill.

Did anyone witness the rowdy group of loud drunks sitting in Sec H, row 21, seats 26-32 lastnight? These guys were sloppy drunk, swearing belligerently, and the surrounding people were asking them to knock it off with no luck. The sherrif came up and said something to them but left a few minutes later. Then the Rumpleminz came out and was being passed back and forth between these guys...And, one of them threw up all over the backs of the family sitting in row 20, not once, but again about 10 mins later. Alot of arguing between the guys and people fed up with them, but no punches or anything else ensuing. Guy in white shirt was the one who got sick mulitple times, guy in black shirt was the one who wanted to fight people. Bad thing about this was all the little kids and older folks that had to put up with this.

This is one of the reasons I spend race nights in the infield with a camera and ear plugs.  No drunks or rowdy fans, no wooden or metal benches wreaking havoc on my neck fusion and most of all I can fart at will and nobody can hear or smell it.  wink

I do tend to drink too many beers whenever I get a chance but fortunately taking racing photos precludes my feeble attempts at alcoholism.  By the time I get out of the infield they have stopped selling beer and I have to drive home so I can't have any.  When I get home I've got photos to upload, notes to jot down for stories and photos to send to publications.  Batteries have to be put on the charger and gear cleaned up if I'm going to races two nights in a row.

I'm planning on working around the house this Saturday then ordering the Knoxville PPV in the man cave.  That will allow me to have a few beers but not to the point of reguritation like these clowns did.  At six decades and counting getting pickled and blowing chunks is not fun or good for the body.

Seriously though, I could never go back to sitting in the stands.  I'd be in traction the next day from sitting on those darned benches.  Nothing short of a lawn chair would be comfortable and Knoxville doesn't have hillside seating like a lot of the tracks up in our area.  When you go there you're locked into the metal bleachers and there ain't enough Advil in the state of Iowa to deal with that.  wink
