Henderson Cruises, Haase Makes History at Knoxville!

by Bill Wright

Knoxville, IA, May 15, 2015 – Justin Henderson had no peer in driving the BDS Motorsports #1 to victory in 410 action at the Knoxville Raceway on Saturday.  His seventh career win was worth $3,000.  McKenna Haase made history in the 305 class as she became the first female feature winner in a sprint car at the historic Knoxville Raceway.  Wayne Johnson scored his 11th career win in the 360 class.

Before a lap could be completed, RJ Johnson got upside down for the second week in a row after contact with another car to start the 20-lap 410 feature.  Tasker Phillips was also caught up in the accident with nowhere to go. Dusty Zomer was also involved, but the team made repairs and had him back out to rejoin the tail of the field.  Lynton Jeffrey was not as lucky and retired.

Ian Madsen led early over Henderson and Logan Forler.  Brooke Tatnell moved into third a lap later, and Brian Brown followed him into fourth on lap three.  Henderson shot by Madsen to lead lap four, right before Bronson Maeschen spun in turn three, collecting Dustin Selvage.

Henderson led Madsen, Tatnell, Brown and Danny Lasoski back to green flag racing.  Just two more laps were in the books before Aaron Reutzel blew a left rear tire, collecting Tim Kaeding, who got upside down.  No one was injured.  On the restart, Lasoski and Terry McCarl moved into fourth and fifth.  Both moved by Tatnell for third and fourth three laps later.

Brown would spin when trying to get by Tatnell for fith on lap 11 bringing out the final caution.  Henderson had no peer, pulling away from Madsen.  Lasoski would shoot to second, but couldn’t make up any ground on the Sioux Falls driver.  Following Henderson and Lasoski to the checkers, were Madsen, McCarl and Davey Heskin.  Don Droud Jr., who had climbed as high as fifth, earned hard-charger honors, going from 19th to sixth.  Dusty Zomer recovered seventh from the tail, and Tatnell, Brown and Austin McCarl completed the top ten.  Brown registered quick time and also won his heat race.  Henderson and Lasoski won the other heats, as all heat winners came from sixth.  Austin McCarl won the B main.

“I was really happy with this racecar all night,” said Henderson in Victory Lane.  “It was fast from the word ‘go’.  Bryan (Sunby) has really done his homework.  We switched to EMI chassis this year…and Parker power, you can’t do any better.  It’s really fun to drive.  I didn’t know if Lasoski was all over me, but I had a feeling he was right there.  I made some mistakes, because I was running too hard.  It’s a little lesson for next week.  Be confident and have patience.”

Wayne Johnson led the entirety of the 18-lap 360 main event.  Clint Garner trailed him early on, followed by pole-sitter, Matt Moro.  The race saw three caution flags fly.  On lap three, Calvin Landis came to a stop in turn two.  Keoni Texeira spun on lap eight, and Dakota Hendrickson contacted the infield wall on the front straight on that restart.

When things went green, Garner made a bid at Johnson for the lead, but Wayne drove the #77x between Garner and the turn two wall to shoot down the backstretch.  Justin Henderson would come on in the late going, edging Garner in the final corner for second.  Nate Van Haaften was fourth, and Tony Shilling fifth.  Joe Beaver, Russ Hall, Jack Dover, Jon Agan and Ryan Roberts rounded out the top ten.  Garner registered quick time, and Johnson, Roberts and Henderson won heat races.

“I ran up on a couple of those guys (lapped traffic) pretty quick,” said Johnson in Victory Lane.  “I wasn’t expecting to get there that quick.  John Cooley, back in Australia…he built that frame and sent a couple over for us to try.  He said I’d love it, and he was right.  That’s a brand new Charlie Fisher power plant.  We’re able to run here for a couple of weeks so we want to get ready for the 360 Nationals.  I think we’re going to put (the car) away.  I wanted to block the slide job (from Garner) on the restart, but I was so good on the top.  I saw him there, and I knew he was going to try it.  He’s a good racer and he gave me room there on the top.”

Before a lap could get completed in the 15-lap 305 feature, Brad Bowman flipped in turn one.  Fellow rookie Trevor Smith was also involved and the pair were uninjured, but done for the night.  Another rookie, Chase Wanner, took the early lead, while McKenna Haase’s move into second was negated when the caution flew for debris on the track.

On the restart, Wanner led Tanner Edwards, Haase, Chris Walraven and J Kinder back to green.  Just two more laps were in the books before Kevin Hetrick spun.  Kinder shot from sixth to third on the restart.  On lap four, Ben Woods got into the wall, as the yellow flag flew again.

While Wanner was using the cushion, Haase found the inside groove to her liking, and she shot by the leader on lap six.  Two more cautions would come out, one for Rob Weuve on lap seven, and one for Tanner Edwards on lap 11.  Haase shot away from the field in clean air to record the first ever sprint car win by a female in Knoxville Raceway history.  Wanner, Kinder, Stacey Alexander and Kade Higday followed her to the checkers.  Hard-charger, Mitchell Alexander, Chris Walraven, Hetrick, Mike Mayberry and Devin Kline rounded out the top ten.  Haase set quick time, while Stacey Alexander, Higday and Mitchell Alexander took the heat races.

“I don’t think it’s sank in yet,” said Haase, who will graduate from Carlisle High School on Sunday.  “This was the night I told everyone I wanted to win, because I wanted to be on a podium two days in a row.  This is a dream come true!”

Interesting "headline" BillW.  Justin looked great and it was awesome to see history being made.  But, no mention of Wayne Johnson or reference to the 360 outcome in the headline.    From our seats, it appeared the 77x was "cruising", too.

He's talking at Knoxville. He's the P.R. guy for Knoxville Raceway.

Erin Crocker (among others) would like a word regarding this statement.

There have been a handful of women who have won a sprint car feature, including Crocker at the highest level (WoO, I believe at Tulare, CA).

This post is about Haase being the first woman to win at Knoxville, which I'm seeing is clearly stated throughout.

Why didn't you put in what was in the concessions Bill and that the chicken bites were extra delicious?

Great article as usual Bill, you can't please everyone.

The past two weeks in the 305 class has been tough to watch with all the yellows and reds knowing that rain is coming.
