DAMION GARDNER – THE WORLD’S FASTEST SPRINT CAR DRIVER!

(Concord, CA, August 16, 2013)  Damion Gardner’s resume is swarming with main event wins and titles including the 2005 USAC/CRA championship and two Oval Nationals victories.  Tonight, as he drives from the Bonneville Salt Flats to Southern California for Saturday’s USAC/CRA race at Perris Auto Speedway, he can bask in the glory of a brand new addition to that resume.  Gardner is “The World’s Fastest Sprint Car Driver.”

The week at Bonneville was satisfying and exasperating at the same time.  Gardner is delighted with his new label and with the knowledge that his Go Rhino! “Green Demon” car can be referred to as “The World’s Fastest Sprint Car.”  However, there is some frustration that they came so close to 200 MPH with a fast pass at 194.27.  Gardner’s final attempt on Friday morning ended with a spin on the slippery salt surface.

“Two-hundred was a nice round number,” Gardner said as he passed by Las Vegas on the way to Perris.  “That is what we went there shooting for, but we didn’t get it.  It leaves something for us to shoot for, for next year.  We definitely learned a lot this week.”

He looks forwards to getting a full year to get the car ready this time.

“We really did not get started (putting the car together) until, I don’t know, maybe two months ago,” he said.  “It was a lot of work in a short amount of time.  It was definitely full steam ahead working on it.”

The wiry driver continued about the time and sacrifices.

“I don’t think I have been home for more than a week in two months,” he laughed.  “I have been down in Ventura putting the car together.  It has been a lot of late nights.  My guys from up north came down and helped and we got it done.  So, it will not be like that (getting the car ready for 2014), but you know racing.  There is always a lot of late nights.”

It was an electrifying week and a new adventure watching Gardner and the Go Rhino! “Green Demon.”  If you thought this effort was a good one, wait until 2014.  As Mike Grosswendt said on Friday, “We have only begun to fight. We are already plotting our revenge.”

Glad it was successful... but it wasn't a sprint car with those tiny narrow  tires, and it's just drag racing if you don't turn...call it what it is

Isn't that kinda like how some of us feel when we say a winged Sprint car is more of a supermodified than a Sprinter?

Yes!! Thanks for showing everyone that a sprint car is a true hot rod..The first thing I did when I got home from work tonight was look to see how it went today and though he didn't hit the 200 mark, well, it was bad ass.

Great for Damion. He is one the the absolute best on a big half mile.

The first time I saw him race at Terre Haute he broke the track record.

Best of luck with the Bonneville goals.

I'm sure some people won't like it cause its less of a sprint car, but I think he needs longer wheelbase to run straight for 10 miles at that speed.

It's a bad ass Sprint car no matter how you cut the cards and yes, a longer wheelbase would make it more stable but if that's what they were looking for they could have used a Siver Crown car. They stayed as close to a traditional Sprinter that they dared and in all respects.... I applaud them for that.

kudo's to damion and crew, couldn't have been an inexpensive i think.  he got close, spun, next year for sure...

seems as tho some "aero" issues are in play, rear downforce?

Ascot was the greatest of all time..

West Capital wasn't half bad either..

Life is good...

I think that, coupled with a short wheel base, plus I believe I heard that it needed more rear weight bias.

SUPPORT WILDLIFE, go to a sprint car race!

So now it deleted original post:

Much heavier full bodied cars have been doing 200 at Boneville for a long time. Sky is the limit when they figure it out. Only thing is a sprint car is specifically designed for a far different task than straight line top speed

Sorry but I have to agree.. It was not a sprintcar on dirt it was a purpose built car for salt flats to drive in a straight line for how many miles.. Great effort by the team to go fast in a straight line but sprintcars run on ovals on dirt.. Do that at 200 mile and you get credit. As far as I know Sammy and Murphy hold the quickest time in a sprintcar , and yes they were on mile ovals but they were still ovals.. I may be wrong but thats my opinion..

If your going to be thay way, Sammy and Murfy were in a modified Sprinter as well. So if you're going to be that picky about the fastes true Sprint car record in a circle, it would have to be without a wing!

Well, it was NOT a purpose built car for the salt flats.  It was Damion's 2010 asphalt sprint car.  As far as skinny tires?  You might want to go back and see how sprint cars were raced "back in the day".

Good Lord! It amazes the hell out of me that there are people who are so fast to discredit someone for trying something that is out of the norm. Had he run his car with a huge right rear wheel and 16 inches of stagger, a set of wings, and not formed an enclosed body people would cry even louder that he was not going in a circle. Had he done this in a winged car going in a circle on the flats so that he would have a large enough area to go 200 without risking hitting something solid we would hear about how it didn't happen at Knoxville! What is this argument about wheel size anyway? Do we discount speeds at a 1/4 mile track because they require 15 to 18 inches of stagger over the 10 to 12 inches they might run at Knoxvile? Why does wheel size matter? They would run right rears that rolled out at 135 inches if they thought that it would be faster at Knoxville.......... People need to get over themselves for petes sake. Damion Gardner did EXACTLY what he set out to do. He took a sprint car, fitted just enough to it to attempt to set a record in what is otherwise a traditional sprinter, and he took a run at 200 mph. Good for him, he took his shot and got close. He never said that he was shooting to knock track records down, or to proclaim himself the worlds greatest driver. He did however go faster than any other sprint car has gone. IN A REAL SPRINT CAR, not a salt flats car!..........I know a group that runs a car at the flats and believe me, that car that Damion drove was not a salt flats car. Congratulations Mr. Gardner and I hope you go faster next year.

I also believe that he can go faster than the 200 mph mark. For a guy who has never driven on the flats I would think that he is pretty proud of himself. At the very least he should be. My buddy runs a car down there and he says that it is a different deal all together. I am pretty impressed with this effort. At least he is doing something pretty cool, which is a lot more than a lot of the keyboard commandos here can say. I am not so sure that I would want to go 194 mph in a car that I felt might be ready to spin out. That sounds a little nerve wracking to me.
