I buy a lot of parts online from hoseheasd, ebay, craigslist, etc. A few things as a buyer
1. Bad pictures (far away, bad angles, blury, uploaded sideways, and worst NO PICTURE AT ALL!)
2. Bad descriptions of item or no description at all.
3. Have multiple ways of contact. Often ads will say calls only no text/emails. Well me personally work over nights and sleep during the day so email or text is only way to get a hold of someone plus playing phone tag is annoying.
4. Do research on what a part costs new. I know the seller wants the highest price and the buyer wants the lowest but I've seen guys sell pretty used stuff for not much below what it goes for new. For me personally if its not far apart I'll step up for the new piece.

I also buy a lot of parts on line as well as sell occasionally on ebay and hoseheads. My personal rule of thumb is .50 cents on the dollar for used parts, and that is usually what I will bid. Once the price goes over that mark I will usually hold off for another opportunity or just buy it new. Race parts are subjected to so many variables that I figure it is not worth spending big $$$ on most used parts. But that is just me. I also try to sell at that .50 on the dollar as well. I agree with LR however in that if you are going to sell on line you must provide as many options as possible for contacting you and describe your parts as accurately as possible.

The .50 on the dollar theory isnt very smart. Many parts are worth more than half and others are worth less. Go by how new or used an item is, how much use you can get from it, and the price if you had to buy it new.

Ebay has a large audience but the fees will cost you 10% or more including the Paypal charges.

I guess if you trust everyone that you buy parts from then you would be right. NO race car part is worth anywhere near new price once it has been on a car and used.

So you need a right rear wheel. New its $450. How does the .50 method work if its 1 race old or has 100 nights on it ? Are they both $225 ?

If they are both straight and usable with good splines you can get $225. for them. That is the point. How many wheels do you see on Ebay or Hoseheads that fit well into that category that happen to be going for roughly the same money? I have purchased both, 3 year old wheels right along side much newer wheels for roughly the same money. Right now most right rear wheels are in the $175. to $250 range. That is right about .50 on the dollar. Many RR wheels new are in the $500.+ neighborhood. I would not pay a dime more for a wheel just because it only has one night on it. Once it hits the track it is used. If you want new money for it then don't mount a tire on it. The market will bare out the worth, but if I am going to spend money above .50 on the dollar then I will buy it new. There are more than enough parts out there to support a low dollar race team. The argument would be different if the market was not flooded with parts, but it is, so there is no point in paying more, you don't need to.
