Stan try the new SB900
I use to use SB800 (with 5 AA) with a battery pack now just a pair of SB900 (last year); I can get two nights just about with the SB900 with the SB800 I could only get one night
The 85mm is sweet along with 35mm f1.8

There's a freeze on new equipment this year and I've got two SB800's and the external battery pack so I'll probably stick with those. The flash tube burnt out on the first SB800 I bought and Nikon charges around $160 to get it fixed so I'll probably do that so I have a backup. The only purchases I'm going to make this year is another CF card, a couple packs of ear plugs. I've got the external battery pack that holds 6 AA's and you put 4 in the flash for a total of ten. I get fast recycle times and as long as I buy new rechargeable every few years they'll last all night. I never put an exact count on it but I've probably gotten close to 300 shots without the batteries going dead. Realistically that's more night shots than I can frame and focus in one night of racing. Some guys like to get 1000 shots a night but I'd feel like a fricken' machine gunner if I did that. If I get 100-200 good shots per night that's plenty. That's all the photos I have time to process and upload to the gallery and like I said earlier in this thread I don't sell enough to justify working very hard at it. I take what I need to illustrate what I want to write about and that's all that I really need. I'm busy doing a lot of other things at the races besides just taking photos so I'm looking for ways to spend less time worrying about pictures and more time taking notes and doing interviews and that sort of thing.
