I like how Tony B does it: Something like
KEEP ONE EYE ON THE FIELD, ONE EYE ON THE FLAGSTAND AND WE ARE GREEN AT KNOXVILLE.
|
Looking, looking, looking....we are green at Knoxville!

I thought the Kville guy said," as they roll their way through corners one and two, past the national sprint car Hall of fame, ladies and gentlemen, it's race time in the valley."
I liked that, I made it my phone ring tone.

In all the series, so not picking on any one of the announcers... but the whole signature line thing to start a race... has become really old to me. But that's just me, to each their own
|
All of the "signature" calls are lame. Every single one of them. They're trying to sound big time but they're all ridiculous and bush league. There are a few who are more professional and don't feel the need to have one. Johnny Gibson and Scott Daloisio come to mind. Thank god for the mute button on my Roku tv. Yes, we're lucky to have Flo and DirtVision but we have to put up with a lot too.

My more politically correct take (so it won't get deleted this time).
Announcers, STOP trying to be the show and just call the f*%@ing race.
Another thing, and you know who you are. STOP the stupid inside jokes and insults, you're not a comedian and it makes you sound like an idiot.

Yes, I do. I noted two in the post above. It's not what he's saying, it's how he's saying it. It's like he's pausing to yawn before half-heartedly finishing the sentence.

The announcer for Hi Limit does a good job. But, his tag line at the beggining of the feature could use a pep talk. If you're excited at the start of the phrase, why are yo so non-chalant at the end? Come to think of it, when would it be anything other than green?
How about:
WE ARE...GREEN!!!
or,
WE ARE...RACING!!!
|
non chalant at the end? maybe change your verbage on how the race starts...................at the GREEN
or, we are CHECKERED AT THE FINISH SUIT YOU BETTER....we are CHECKERED? LOL here Murph...

I know that the internet has made it so that everybody has to play the tribalism game. Anybody that's not on your 'team' has to be the 'enemy'. From that frame of mind, anybody that says anything you don't agree with, or anything mildly critical maeans they must be put in a category of 'us' or 'them', and has to be "dealt with' appropriately. I call BS on that.
I'm not an H-L guy; I'm not a WoO guy. I'm a sprint car car fan, just like you are. That's the common bond that brings us to Hoseheads, to talk about sprint cars. Questioning things, or being critical of things should not be seen as 'evil'.
Johnny Gibson does some stuff that drives me crazy. That doesn't make him my 'guy'.
Oh yeah. LOL!

In my opinion, the best was and still is Bruce Ellis at Williams Grove. There was a little banter about who the fans were thinking about whom would be the winner and as the cars reached the end of the back straight, Bruce would say "Well we are about to find out because ITS SHOW TIME AT WILLIAMS GROVE SPEEDWAY." The call would end as the front row hit the chalk line in turns 3/4. Perfect timing, a slight raising of the voice to indicate excitement without the hype, indicating something "BIG" was about to happen. No phony hype calling attention to himself, but here we go, this is the reason you fans are here. Not surprising to find out that Bruce was a teacher. Giving precise instructions, getting his point across and pay attention to what is going to happen.
Second best was Chet on Flo's USAC shows. Short and sweet, "Its time to drop the hammer!"
The worst, again in my opinion, is Earl at Port Royal. "Its time to light the fires and kick the tires." What the heck does that even mean? Close second is "This is what you saved your lunch money for!" Perhaps you can make lunch between "We are .........." and "GREEN"
Enjoy your Labor Day celebrations.

Probably the most annoying for me right now is the High Limit pit reporter. Everything he talks about becomes about him so I mute all the pit reporting on Flo HL broadcasts. The announcer isn't bad but it didn't take long for both National series to look pretty much the same. They both work up the crowds in a similar way and have their four wide and green flag trademark spiels.

Keep in mind that dirt track announcer hype goes back to before the internet or streaming. It was started in simpler times and is a holdout from the early days of racing. Twin City Speedway, Blaine, Minnesota, 1960 I was a young boy of nine. The announcer used the line "he's got everything open but the toolbox" so many times that even this kid got sick of it.
Some of the announcers go back decades and still use that style of whipping up crowds in the stands. The old joke about "he has a face made for radio" started when television first became available. Some of the announcing styles I think we could use a variation of that and say "he has a live crowd voice". With streaming I'm a firm believer in the mute button and changing the channel if a race has too many support classes or sketchy track conditions. When you're not in the stands and don't have a vested interest I won't hesitate to turn it off and watch the five minute hilite on YouTube the next day.

Most of the pit reporters do whats called "leading the witness" in a courtroom... long winded analysis posed as a question & all the driver can do is agree or disagree. Then the driver just goes ahead & lists his sponsors & thanks his crew
Lets face it, there's a lot of down time at sprint car races & announcers are always trying to fill space & make it seem exciting

I don't like it either, but that's okay. Just b/c I don't like something doesn't mean someone else needs to change what they do.

Bruce Ellis used a similar line "It's showtime at Williams Grove speedway...now." Worked for me. Selinsgrove announcer used to say "If you have a need for speed, this is the place to see a race" or "1 will go low, 1 will go high maybe 3 and 4 will pass them by!" All good stuff. I don't care too much for those that get over-animated to the point where they are screaming or trying to make a single file race sound exciting. That annoys me. The guy at Port Royal that likes to add an "ie" to drivers first names annoys me a little too. It's all good though. I don't go to listen to the announcers. As long as they are knowledgable, get the names and line ups right and keep you informed as to what's going on, I'm good.

Its Stevie Smith, not Stevie Smith Jr....
It is not the king's "hat" it is the king's "crown"
Likewise, It is not the king's "seat" it is the kings "throne"
"We are...................Green" is very annoying.
Only opinions folks, my opinions.
"I am........................out of here"
