I was just wondering if anyone could tell me where I might be able to find a photo of bristol when they covered it with dirt. I have 2 friends that are new to dirt track racing, and don't beleive me when I told them that the sprint cars raced there in 2001 or 2002. Thanks for any help.

Thanks, Jeff Pinkerton

typical WoO shows hard slick follow the leader, but Sammy was fast if you could find him in the dust!

Sammy Swindell and Jeff Shepard's battle in 2001 was hardly follow the leader. And while that was going on Steve Kinser was charging through the field from 20th some odd to finish 4th.

BTW they raced at Bristol in 2000 and 2001.

I was there both years and I certainly don't remember it being follow the leader. Kinser moved up about 15 positions and Sammy and Jeff Shepard had a spirited battle for the lead for several laps. Just to make sure I got out the old tape and watched it. The track was certainly more racy than most tracks seem to be now days

Jeff,

Don't forget to tell your friends that the sprint cars turned laps almost a full second FASTER than those NASCAR boys...or was it almost 2 seconds faster, i can't remember.

I would hope so, almost half the weight, fuel injection, wings, soft wide tires, 40 MORE CUBIC INCHES, and Alcohol, I'm surprised they are not quicker. And no body templates to boot and/or they are camyrs, taurus, etc. 4 door sedans steel bodies and Jamie your point was they were a whole second or two quicker wow wink

Easy, jd. They also took out 12 degrees of banking for the Sprints.

man if they ever ran a REAL nascar race on dirt ---lets say a 250 lap race - if they counted caution laps they would probably only end up with about 25 laps of green flag racing. I know most disagree with this........but is it not ironic how many rookies, newbies, or even first-timers have gotten top 5 or top 10's in the first few races? Trained monkeys could do what they're doing. keep in mind I said trained.......I ain't sayin its just the easiest thing. But aside from the goin around in a circe 500 times.........those drivers are just guiding the cars. Not a whole lot of REAL drivin. I really think there are about 25 guys of the same caliber just a difference in their cars and their builders. It's more about what car owner you have and the sponsor to go along. I bet nascar did a lot wheelin and dealin to help get Dale Jr. with Hendrick. They even opened the chase up to 12 drivers and he still couldn't make it. Now Hendrick will buy him a shot at it.

sorry to offend any nascar fans. it's just really really weak racing and I think it makes the rest of the REAL racing (aka DIRT RACING) look bad. jmo.

I'm usually a reader not a writer, but man, OK, you have a bad opinion of the Nascar drivers. Not fair. If it was all the way you say, then Jeff, Tony, Carl, and all the others who started on dirt would still be here with us slingin' dirt. However.......... it aint all that way, bud. jMoSmile

I like a good NASCAR race about once a year, Usually Daytona in the spring. But it would also be fair to say that I could also possibly enjoy a good barge, bus or trailer race if the weather was good and the cooler was full.

headline-fastestdirttrack.gif (2596 bytes)

bristol-test.jpg (15854 bytes)(Bristol, Tennessee, April 28, 2000) The officials and crew at Bristol Motor Speedway are busy laying down the clay on what is without a doubt going to be the world's fastest dirt track.

This week the crew put down a test section of clay in order to get a better idea for the depth of surface that will be required, and what kind of base will allow the clay to be removed easily without damaging the asphalt racing surface.

Jimmy Mars and the Hav-A-Tampa Dirt Racing Series are scheduled to invade the Winston Cup facility for the inaugural event on June 2-3. Donny Schatz and the World of Outlaws will put on their spectacular show the following weekend, June 9-10.

If you are a dirt racing fan, these are two shows you do not want to miss. Events of this magnitude are taking dirt racing to the next level. Make sure that you get out and support the teams and sponsors that make these historic events a reality.

JD, not to make you look stupid, but 1-2 seconds on a half mile track is a huge difference. It equals up to 15% faster, or in other words, the sprints would be lapping those sedans once every 8 or so laps, give or take.

Klootwyk, you are forgetting you are allowed to make him look stupid because it is a Sprintcar board and he was defending NAScrap.

not only did they take out 12 degrees of bank but the sprints ran on dirt and was almost 2 seconds faster !!! i wonder what a winged 410 pavement sprint would run on that track in it's natural state ? probably not as fast as dirt cars but it would be fun to see.
