MIKE MARTIN SPRINTS TO “BORDER TOUR” VICTORY AT LAS CRUCES
By Lance Jennings

JULY 13, 2015... After rain washed out Friday’s race at El Paso, “The Magic Man” Mike Martin of Yuma, Arizona led all 30-laps to win the “Border Tour” finale in Las Cruces, New Mexico. For Martin, Saturday’s $2,000 USAC SouthWest and NMMRA Sprint Car triumph at Southern New Mexico Speedway was his first victory of the campaign. “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr., Matt Rossi, Brian Hosford, and Dennis Gile chased “The Magic Man” across the finish line.

Starting on the outside of the front row, Mike Martin moves into a tie for sixth on the SouthWest win list with Brady Bacon, Dave Darland, Matt Rossi, Stevie Sussex, and Rick Ziehl. Currently ranked sixth in the point chase, the pilot of the #16 Sherwin-Williams / Desert Building Materials won his series leading eighth heat race of the year. In addition, the veteran driver has two high-point driver awards, ten top-10 finishes, and 53 feature laps led to his credit. “The Magic Man” will be looking to add another trophy to his collection this Saturday at Queen Creek’s Arizona Speedway.

Buckeye, Arizona’s “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. claimed second in the USAC-NMMRA “Border Tour” finale. Racing the Massey Motorsports’ #50 RSS Industries / Rod End Supply RSS, Davis won the night’s first heat race and left Las Cruces placed second in points. To date, the five-time Arizona champion has one feature win, two high-point driver awards, four heat race victories, fourteen top-10 finishes, and 36 feature laps led on the year. “Chargin” Charles has four SouthWest wins at Queen Creek and will be one of the favorites to watch on Saturday.

Matt Rossi of South Central, Arizona scored third in the Las Cruces main event. Driving the family owned #02 Apache Scapes / IWR Spike, Rossi won his first 8-lap heat race of the season. The defending Western World Champion sits third in points with one feature win, two high-point driver awards, three hard charger awards, ten top-10 finishes, and 27 feature laps led on the season. Matt will have his sights on Saturday’s $1,500 payday at Arizona Speedway.

Gilbert, Arizona’s Brian Hosford charged from tenth to claim fourth at Southern New Mexico Speedway. Piloting Bernie Weber’s #32B Coffin & Trout Fine Jewelers / Invision Auto Body Spike, Hosford ran third in his heat race and heads to Queen Creek ranked seventh in the standings. At press time, the veteran driver has two heat race victories and seven top-10 finishes in the campaign. This Saturday, Brian will be looking to earn his first USAC SouthWest main event win.

Dennis Gile of Phoenix, Arizona had his best run of the year with a fifth place finish at Las Cruces, New Mexico. Racing his #13 Quarterback Academy / Bobby Q Ellis, Gile scored third in the program’s first heat race. Continuing to improve, Dennis is currently tenth in points with one heat race victory and three top-10 finishes to his credit. Gile will be looking to earn his first sprint car win at Arizona Speedway.

Farmington, New Mexico’s Jason Grady earned the night’s “Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors with a tenth place run from twenty-third. Driving his #45 RSS Industries / Revis Auto Finish RSS, Grady took sixth in his heat race and ran seventh in the semi-main. In limited starts, the NMMRA regular is thirty-fifth in USAC SouthWest point standings.

Andy Reinbold of Gilbert, Arizona won his first 8-lap heat race of the season. Piloting Todd Underwood’s #19 AME Electrical / Ross Equipment Rentals Spike, Reinbold scored twenty-second in the feature and left Las Cruces placed eleventh in points. As this writing goes to press, the veteran racer has seven top-10 finishes on the year. Andy will have his sights on his first USAC win at Queen Creek.

Las Cruces, New Mexico’s “The Real Deal” Rick Ziehl took the victory in the semi-main. Racing John Ziehl’s #20Z Lucas Oil / Bay Hayes Motorsports Maxim, Ziehl scored fifth in his heat race and fifteenth in the main event. In limited starts, the multi-time ASCS Champion is tied for forty-third in points with two top-10 finishes.
