Yea I will be very interested to see this team at knoxville. Stevie runs well there. If my memory is correct, I think he even has a podium or two..

No Kings Royal. They will run at the Grove the week before the Outlaws, the Outlaws shows at the Grove and then off to Knoxville.

Stevie finished 3rd as a rookie in '89 .. was also 3rd in '90 .. had it in the bag in '93 before the rains came and Karl Kinser worked his magic (ran 2nd). He was 3rd in '09 to cap off his great year in the Zemco car.
He's got 6 top 5's and 14 top 10's in his 21 Nationals A-Main appearances... I'd say he does alright there!

I've always wanted to say that my two favorite drivers are the only drivers to ever win both the Ohio and PA Speedweeks. Stevie Smith and Keith Kauffman!!
Now if only Stevie would have won the Western PA Speedweek like Keith did although that speedweek was a little too short-lived and he was also busy running with the Outlaws too!!
I hope the end of this month and mid-August is as good as this past week was!!!

Your memory is correct! He finished third his rookie year at Knoxville, and it was the first time Stevie had ever seen the track as a driver. And, Stevie was giving the King all and actually maybe more than the King could handle when the rain delay came. The delay was one thing, but the officials determined it should be an open red. In those days, when Karl Kinser got an open red, the rest of the field usually paid for it. That night, it cost Stevie the win, in my opinion. And yes, I was there.

I was there in '93 as well... and yep, totally agree! The roar of the crowd heard over the sound of the engines when Stevie passed the King in turn 1 is something I'll never forget!

Amazing what we retain after so many years as race fans! That turn one pass is the first thing I ever think about when I think of Stevie at Knoxville. That image is still crystal clear in my minds eye!

I won't be making it Stubb... but I'm sure AJ and some of the old crew will be there. Family stuff (3 kids!) is slowing me down these days! You guys going to head this way in August?? If so, the least I can do is buy you a beer or two...
