Petaluma Speedway, Spetember 1, 2007 - 360 non wing open

Shane Golobic piloting the family owned black #57 sprinter used a lap 23 pass of #93x Steven Williams to take the $2,500 win at Petaluma Speedway Saturday night.

21 cars, weather - warm, track was tacky, hooked up and hard to pass in the A-Main. Field was nearly evenly split between 10 carbeurated sprints and 11 injected sprints. The #5b scatched after hot laps. Not sure of the name. There were 3 drviers subbing for Petaluma track regulars tonight. Rick Williams was in the the #25b of Dustin Baxter, Robert Ballou was drivng the #2 of Mike Learn, and Terry Shank was in the #17 of Rob Johnson. 4 heats were run, trophy dash, and A-Main

Steven Williams led all qualifiers with a time of 14.698 followed by: 2. #25b, Rick Williams,14.719 3. #57, Golobic, 14.724 4. #17, Shank, 14.947 5. #38, Davey Pombo,15.002 6. #56, Shawn Arriga, 15.067 7. #33, Jason Macintosh,15.070 8. #20, Keith Shiperd, 15.223 9. #41, David Press, 15.230 10. #7, Charlie Mars, 15.333. Ballou was just out of the top 10 at 15.349.

Heat 1 - 6 laps, 5 cars, finish, car #, name(started)

1. #40, Darrell Hannestad(1) 2. #38, Pombo(3) 3. #93x, Williams(5) 4. #50, Don Emery(2) 5. #41, Press(4) - After the intial start was called back Hannestad bolted to the lead from the pole. Pombo follows Hannestad into 2nd and Williams grabs 3rd as the 1st lap is completed, Emery to 4th. Williams pressures Hannestad for 2nd as Pombo checks out. Hannestad keeps Williams in 3rd and this is the way they would finish.

Heat 2 - 6 laps, 5 cars, finish, car #, name, (started)

1. #3x, Geving(2) 2. #8, Jim Richardson(1) 3. #7, Charlie Mars(3) 4. #25b, Williams (5) 5. #56, Arriaga(4) - Richardson guns to the early lead. Williiams is up to 3rd by lap 2 getting by Arriaga. Mars fades to last. Top 3 of Richardson, Geving, and Williams are runnning together down the frontstretch on lap 3 when contact between Geving and Williams puts the #25b up against the turn 1 fence. Williams is clearly not happy with Geving as he gestures at the #3x as the field goes by on the yellow. Williams would be done for the heat as he goes off on the hook. 2007 Petaluma 360 winged champion Arriaga stops in trun 4 during the yellow and is towed off. This would end Arriaga's racing for tonight. Only 3 cars on the lap 3 restart -8, 3x, 7. Geving tries to pass Richardson low in turn 1 on the restart but Richardson holds her off. Lap 5 sees Geving try the same move in the same turn and this time makes it work to win the heat followed by Richardson and Mars.

Heat 3 - 6 lpas, 5 cars, finish, car #, name, (started)

1. #2, Ballou(1) 2. #33, Macintosh (2) 3. #57, Golobic(3) 4. #9n, Lathrop(4) 5. #9, Hayes(5) - 1st start is called back as Lathrop and Hayes are not side by side with Lathrop (on the pole) wanting a slower start and hanging back. The 2nd start sees Lathrop push Hayes up to the wall and the yellow light comes on again. The starter is not happy and moves the front row to the rear putting Ballou and Macintosh at the front. The start sees Ballou jump out front. Macintosh tries to pressue on lap 3 and Golobic joins on lap 4, but it was single file to finish.

Heat 4, 5 cars, 6 laps, finsish, car #, name(started)

1. #17, Shank(5) 2. #93, Jerry Kubzka(2) 3. #20, Shipherd(4) 4. #41s, Jack Clark(1) 5. #M1, Billy Macedo(3) - Start sees Kubzka grab the lead with the field bunched behind. Shipherd jumps a wheel between 1&2, bicycles badly, and somehow stays on all 4's and comes to an abrupt stop in turn 2 to bring out the yellow on lap1. He is re-fired and joins the rear for a total restart - 1M,93,17,20,41 (41 was to start on front row, but elects to tag rear). Next start sees the #M1 of Macedo encounter a mechanical problem in turn 2 and he idles slowly around the track and pulls off. Shank takes advantage running low down the backstretch and goes from 3rd to 1st passing Kubzka while Macedo is trying to stay out of the way high. Shipherd under Clark in turn 3 on lap 4 for the last change of position.

Tropy Dash, top 4 qualifiers inverted, 4 laps (sets the 1st 2 rows of the A-Main) - The #25b of Williams cannot get fixed in time from his heat 2 incident and Pombo as the 5th fastest qualifier takes his spot on the pole.

1. #38, Pombo(1) 2. #17, Shank(2) 3. #93x, S. Williams(4) 4. #57, Golobic(3) - Pombo to the lead with Shank inn tow. S. Williams takes 3rd on lap 2with an outside move in turn 3. Shank and Williams right on Pombo, but passing is tough and 4 laps end quickly.

A-Main, 25 laps, 18 cars, finish, car #, name(started) - #56 Arriaga, #5b, and #M1 of Macedo do not make the call for the start.

1. #57, Golobic(4) 2. #93x, S. Williams(3) 3. #40, Hannestad(8) 4. #2, Ballou(9) 5. #33, Macintosh(6) 6. #3x, Geving(11) 7. #17, Shank(2) 8. #20, Shipherd(7) 9. #8, Richardson(15) 10. #9, Hayes(10) 11. #41, Press(16) 12. #93, Kubzka(13) 13. #50, Emery(12) 14. #41s, Clark(14) 15. #38, Pombo(1-DNF) 16. #9n, Lathrop(17-NDF) 17. #25b, Williams(5-DNF) 18. #7, Mars(18)

Mars decides to tage the rear before the green moving up the outside row. At the drop of the green Pombo ttakes the lead from his #1 starting spot. The #93x of Steve Williams takes 2nd with a powder move under the #17 of Shank in turn 4 to conclude lap 1. Track is hooked up and the carb. sprinters are hauling, too. Rick Williams grabs 4th from Golobic on lap 2. As the top 4 enter turn 1 to start lap 3 Pombo checks up slightly and it is time for a brake check. Williams cannot get on the binders quick enought and hops the #17 wheel and flips in 2 to bring out the red. Williams is OK, bit finished for the night as his recent string of bad luck at Petaluma continues. Re-start lap 3 - 38,93x,17,57,33,40,2,20,3x,9,50,8,93,9n,41s,41 - #33 of Macintish spins exiting turn 4 to abort the start. Luckily he spins to inside berm and everyone misses. The #17 of Shank has some bad luck as the mishap ealrier with Williams now shows he has a flat left rear. Shank goes to the pits, changes the tire and comes back out. Macintosh is refired and joins Shank at the rear. Re-start lap 3 - 38,93x,57,40,2,20,3x,9,50,8,93,9n,41s,41,33,17 - Pombo takes over again after the re-start and S. Williams is right behind trying several different lines to get around Pombo. Lap 11 and 1st lapped traffice appears. Lap 14 and Williams uses a nice outside move in turn 4 to take the lead from Pombo. The #9n of Lathrop brings out the yellow seconds later stopping up against the turn 4 wall. Lathrop off on the hook and is out of the event. Williams pass of Pombo is negated as the line up returns to the previous lap scored. Re-start sees the #33 and #17 bang wheels on the front stretch and keep going. Pombo enters turn 3 and the front end breaks as he slides nose 1st and taps the middle of turn 3/4 wall to bring out the last yellow. #93x Williams inherits the lead. Restart - 93x, 57,40,2,3x,20,8,33,17,9,93,50,41,41s - Williams leads them to the line and opens up a 10 car advantage in 2 laps. Ballou is trting everything he can to get around the #40 of Hannestad, bit nothing sticks. Golobic is trying to stay with Williams. The #33 of Macintosh grabs the 6th spot on lap 17 with a low move in turn 2 to get by the #8 and #20. Lap 23 and traffic is becoming a factor and golobic closes the gap. Williams gets bottled up behind the #50 of Emery entering turn 1. Golobic sees ewaht is happening and storms around the outside of 1 and 2 to take the lead for the 1st time. Golobic takes the white flag and holds of Williams to take the exciting win. Macintosh passes Geving on the final lap to finish 5th.

Hard Chargers - Richardson in the #8 moved up 6 spots and Hanestad, Ballou, and Geving all gained 5 positions. The #33 of Macinosh was the one on the move as he came back from his lap 3 spin that took him to the rear and 15th on the restart and raced his way to a 5th place finish.

Shane Golobic soars to wingless sprint payday
By: Harlan Osborne

When classes ended at the conclusion of Shane Golobic’s sophomore year in June the Fremont high school student immediately signed up for summer school. Not conventional summer school with books and desks but exciting, hands-on, competitive sprint car racing on dusty dirt tracks in Indiana where the 16-year-old honed his driving skills. Not only did he get an A in attendance, the talented young racer also won his first feature racing wingless 410s against older and more experienced drivers.

Those races in the Midwest taught Golobic invaluable lessons about handling a race car all of which were on display Saturday night when the daring teenager patiently chased down race leader Steven Williams before taking charge with two laps remaining and capturing the $2500-to-win Verihealth “Run What You Brung” wingless 360 sprint car feature at Petaluma Speedway.

The event brought in a mix of carbureted spec sprints and fuel-injected sprint cars with the carbureted cars competing for bonus money in addition to the posted purse.

Golobic was timed third-fastest among the 21 entries and started the 25-lap feature in the second row behind trophy dash winner Davey Pombo and heat winner Terry Shank Jr. and next to fast-qualifier Steven Williams. Pombo led from the start with Williams and Golobic in pursuit.

Williams inherited the lead when Pombo’s car broke on lap 14 and quickly opened a sizable lead over Golobic, spec sprint car ace Darrell Hanestad, Robert Ballou, and Alissa Geving. In lapped traffic on lap 23, Golobic seized his chance to take the lead with a high side pass around Williams.

“The opportunity came and I jumped on it,” explained Golobic. Two laps later Golobic was savoring his first Petaluma Speedway victory. Second place went to a dejected Williams, who blamed himself for surrendering the front spot, and third place to carbureted driver Hanestad. Robert Ballou finished fourth and Jason McIntosh, a Petaluma regular who passed Geving on the white flag lap, was fifth.

Heat winner and Petaluma rookie-of-the-year Geving claimed sixth place over heat winner Shank, Keith Shiperd (carbureted), Jim Richardson, and Dave Hays (carbureted).
