Ahhh. . . the things you do when you're bored and recovering from a nasty case of the summer flu.  Started playing around with Google Earth, trying to find evidence of tracks I've been to that no longer race sprint cars (or anything, for that matter).  Since I'm in Ohio, I started there.  Can anyone give me the approximate year the following Ohio tracks last raced?

1) Lakeville Speedway

2) Quad City (McCutchenville) Speedway

3) Expo Speedway

4) R&R Speedway

5) St. Clairsville (Cannonball) Speedway

I know both Cannonball & Expo raced SOMEWHAT recently after years of sitting idle. I'd guess Quad City has been gone the longest of these five.  And for the record, I didn't see sprints at R&R (not sure they ever ran sprints), but saw a midget race there--possibly NAMARS?

And if anyone REALLY wants to dig deep: What year did they cover the asphalt of the half mile version of Sharon Speedway?  I know as a youngster I saw at least one race there on the pavement.

Thanks

Johnny Gibson

Lakeville closed 4 or 5 years ago. McCutchenville closed in the mid 80's if my memory serves me right. I'm sure that the guys over at pitgate would have more specific answers.

Johnny, Expo still races every year during their fair week (mid-July typically). Usually 3 to 4 races, featuring big block modifieds, crate lates, modifieds and stocks.

Expo runs every year during fair week like Tyler said. The last sprint race was in 2007. I'm pretty certain Jody Keegan won. Sharon got covered in dirt in 81 or so, according to my dad. Cannonball last ran in 2012.

Is Oakshade still operating? Does it go by another name now?

I know Cannonball Speedway had a sprint car race back in 2012 as part as ohio sprint speedweek. I think it was won by Kyle Larson? All I remember is Logan Schuharts car catching on fire and basically melting in the infield as the fire crew tried to put it out.

No Nerf Bars- I believe Oakshade still operates but i do not think they run sprints. Went on their website and it looks like they run late models, bombers, compacts

R&R closed in '98-'99 I think, never ran sprint cars.  Muskingum County maybe 20 minutes away ran sprint cars, but not very often.  I think it is still owned by Donnie Moran and is mainly a fender racing facility.

Found a youtube video of a crash at Lakeville speedway from 2009. It raced in 2010 as well but i do not know if sprint cars raced there that season though. Facebook shows that the track was auctioned off in 2014.

I drove past Cannonball (StClairsville) Speedway back in September...It appears to be a work site for a gas drilling operation now.  Real shame...Cool track...Not far of I-70 and the National Road.

Larson did win that race..He also won the next night at Wayne County...I remeber Logan cathcing on fire..Real scarry deal

Johnny, maybe someone else can help verify, but in 1981(if I remember right it was 81) I won what I think was the first race at Sharon after the dirt was laid down, I even think it was an All Star race and Keith Kauffman was 2nd in Weikerts car,

Brad Doty

Brad,

The Wheels of Speed website has listed for July 15th, 1981....

1981Brad Doty, in the Bowers #28d, won the All Star Sprint Car race over Smokey Snellbaker, Keith Kauffman, Lee Osborne and Richard Lupo at the Sharon Speedway, Hartford,OH.

There was also another one from May 1st in 1981 that this site said you won....see below...

1981Brad Doty won the Super Sprint Car feature over Rick Ungar, Buddy Cochran, Johnny Beaber and Bobby Allen, at the Sharon Speedway, Hartford,OH

Yes, Oakshade still races, but their top class is late models, not sprints.

Johnny, did you make to Waynesfield last Saturday night? Rough night for the non-wing guys.

Unfortunately I didn't make it to any races Saturday--came down with the flu. BARELY made it thru Charlotte Friday night.  I'll have to catch Waynesfield some other time.  Planning to go to Millstream Sunday for the first time since seeing Joe Gaerte win an All-Star race there on May 6, 1990.  (That was quite the weekend for me: went to Atomic (K-C) for the Freedom 40 on May 5, but it was rained out, so I hustled to Eldora just in time to see Steve Kinser take the checkered flag in what I believe was his last non-wing start. The win against the CRA tour was worth $10,000. Hit Millstream the next night while CRA rained out at Terre Haute.)

I know Eldora wasn't one of the tracks you were asking about, but it's really interesting to check out Eldora on Google Earth. To the southeast of the existing track, you can see the mile track that Earl started, but never finished.

Millstream has been on my radar ever sence thes schedules we announced, really glad the All Stars picked these dates up.

Many a Sunday nights my Dad and I sat on the hill in one there, it will be another bout of emotion without him this Sunday but still really looking forward to seeing the old joint. I see they hae it listed as a 1/2, not sure on that one, always considered it a 3/8. Man did Hewitt get around that place.

As to your lost tracks, check out New Bremen, I drove through there years back looking for any remnants but was on the way to the big E and did not have the propper amount of time.

They ought to have you on the mic for a bit Sunday.

FrankR63,

Millstream is special to me as well. I saw my first USAC Sprint race there in 1977. I can't remember who won, but I do remember Gary and Larry, Jan Opperman getting over the rim in turn 1 and 2, and Clark Templeman having a sour motor all evening. I also saw an All Star race in the 80's where Rick Ferkel was about to win it and Steve Butler raced past him with about 5 laps to go, if I remember it right.....

I liked the place better without the walls....So looking forward to this Sunday...hope the weather cooperates!

Ya man! those were the days. I agree about the walls.....Earl turned it into a little Eldora in some ways, still a killer joint. I just hope it is not like going back to an old neighborhood where everything is not quite as good as you remember, I am prepared for that and will not let that dampen things.

It looks like Sunday might be our best shot at racing this weekend, debating on Plymouth IN tonight. I 96 Sat. looks iffy. Attica looks OK for tonight but two nights of Wings is more than I can take.

Hope you enjoy it Sunday, I will!
