If you're hitting up Pella, you might as well visit their local shops. As someone said Jaarsma (Yaarsmah), is a must stop. Be sure to go there before a big meal.
If you're into coffee there's smokey row on the SW corner of the square in Pella. ON that same road (Franklin maybe?) a block to the east is a nice ladies shop... purses, accessories, clothing etc.
I'm assuming you're staying at Prarie Meadows in Altoona, in that case you might as well hit up Bass Pro. On your way to Knoxville heading down the highway stop in Prarie City and go to Goldies. Great ice cream (get the monster cookie blizzard) and voted best tenderloin in Iowa, a couple of years ago.
Hope you have fun!

If you like horse racing they might be running at Prairie Meadows. I was a regular at Tasos for many, many years. The High Vee has a great Breakfast spread as well. The racing, SECOND TO NONE. You will be easy to spot, your grin/smile will give it away as you sit in your seat 15 minutes after it ends.....

A short 2-1/2 drive to the North East you can view Barge Races on the Mississippi River!
