All cars time trial. 2 heat races, lined up in "standard" WoO form (invert 4). Heat race winners and the two fastest qualifiers finishing 2nd-6th in their heats locked into the dash. The remaining cars split into two "qualifying races", lined up straight up according to heat race finish. Qualifying race winners, along with the 2 fastest timers finishing 2nd-6th in the quaifying races locked into the dash. "Standard" WoO format from there: 8 car dash, with the rest of the field behind the dash cars lined up according to qualifying time.

Guess ya gotta do something to fill out the night's racing when only 17 cars show up.

Sounds fair to me. Sometimes you need to adjust to what you have to deal with.

Yup, I think so too. Just got home from Eldora, and while it was a LM and Mod show, it was 5 grand to win for each class. Under 30 LM and just over 30 mods.
I hope this isn't a sign of the times, but it concerns me.

Hope it works out well enough to use for 21+ fields too. The next step would be to dump time trials all together and use the Chili Bowl/ASCS format for everything.

I disagree Speedbump. I see the two heat format all winter in Australia, and I don't like it. One heat is enough if there are at least 7 cars in a heat. (In my opinion, 32 cars is the perfect amount for a full race program. 4 heats of 8 cars, one 8 car dash, a 12 car B, and a 24 car A. And again, in my opinion, 3 hours from the start of hotlaps to the end of the final A-main. Percect.)

I understand and don't wholly disagree.....2 1/2 to 3 hours from first hotlap green to final checkered is perfect. I just think it is high time for a major shakeup of format in favor of something different. The new 20 car or less format is something different and hopefully a positive thing for what otherwise is getting very close to the wrong side of the price of admission vs entertainment value decision that most of us have to make. I like the ASCS format because it puts a lot of laps out there for the fans.
Put it this way Johnny, the way I understand it, the average Aussie sprint car meet attendance is much higher than the average American sprint car race.....if this is true, why? Maybe the format?

16 cars last year, 21 the year before. SoCal is not exactly a hot bed for winged sprint cars.

Too bad, just costing the car owners more money.
Extra laps on the equipment- another chance to get into a wreck.
Its not the car owners fault the car count is low..

Actually, from what I've seen in Australia, the biggest weekly crowds are at Valvoline Sydney Speedway, where they have eliminated the 2 heat program in favor of a World of Outalws format.

You try to give the fans the same amount of racing at each track. 20 cars or less 2 heat races and a 2 qualifiers, 24 up to 30 cars 3 heats of 10 cars or 4 heats of (2) 8 car heats and (2) 7 car heats max, 34 to 40 cars 4 heats 10 cars max each plus if any more than 40 cars add to back of heat up to 44 cars then add another heat.

Johnny.. I don't think that's a fair comparison.. That also happens to be close to the biggest population center in Oz.
A fair and balanced way would be to measure the population within a 1 hour drive and divide by the fan count.
Valvolines curfew plays into their format.

I agree with Johnny that a 32 car field is perfect. At least near perfect. 32 to 40 would be best. However when the field falls to 20 or less, I believe it is time for some real concern. With that few cars, is a general admission of $30+ justified? Why is it that more local or regional area cars are not there to increase the field? Should the WoO consider withdrawing from tracks in areas where the car count falls this low? I don't claim to know the answers to these issues but it seems that when the local car owners dont feel like it is worth there effort to race with the WoO, couldn't some incentive be offered to make it worth their while, even if the car is a 360? Perhaps comp the pitpasses and a few general admission tickets? Or just offer a few hundred dollars to pursuad them to enter. Years ago it was common for promoters to pay extra for top names to come to their track and race, why not offer a little extra to fill the fields to the desired 32?

From the pics on twitter that I saw, seemed like a good crowd. Last year they had 16 sprints, so I can't believe this was unexpected. California teams seem not to want to travel down there, so short of co-sanctioning with king of the west, not sure what you could do.

+1 that works for me. The small car count format worked well last night at the PAS. Good show all around. Thank you.
We need more sprint car racing at our home track.

I sure wish the KWS series made a better showing at the PAS last night. I drive to No Cal for a lot of their shows. Guess that will change. Also I don't believe they had a race scheduled agains WOO last night.

Should unhook them so 360s can run with them so they get more than 17 cars in the first place.
They don't even know how to spell sprint car

I applaud them for at least trying something. Between the extra racing and the USAC cars on the program I believe I got my money's worth!
