I've always imagined that no other racetrack in the world could possibly be closer to the beach than Ventura Raceway. Information from a friend in New Zealand, Allan Batt, and google maps satellite imagery reveals that this is not the case. Beachlands Speedway in Dunedin, NZ is probably a little bit closer. Perhaps even closer still would be Oceanview Speedway in Whanganui, NZ but if there's a track that's closer to the ocean than Greenstone Park Speedway in Greymouth, NZ it would likely be able run only at low tide. Check it out for yourself, pretty interesting.

I was really little when I was taken there, but I remember a track in Huntington Beach near the oil fields that seemed like it was in the sand dunes. Was I dreaming?

That track was Huntington Beach Stadium, AKA Legion Stadium, AKA Talbert Stadium, located at the southwest corner of Beach Blvd. and Atlanta Ave. The track was about 1 mile from the water and was there from 1946 through 1957. There is a mobile home trailer park and a town home project on the property now.
