Interesting change from prior years.

Then why bother with qualifying? Not that I don't like to watch but with the draw for inversion and no points to gain it kinda takes  away the  incentive to be a top qualifier.

I don't disagree. I wonder if this is the first step towards potentially getting rid of the invert?

Qualifying points were added as a way of discouraging "sandbagging" during qualifying. In 2015 (and an inversion of 4 in the heat races), it's MUCH tougher to try to "sandbag" qualifying for a front row starting position. (AND the four or five fastest qualifiers who transfer from their heat earn starting positions in the dash as well).  So the "need" for a larger qualifying bonus no longer exists.

Thanks Johnny,  I didn't know they went to a 4 car inversion.

The heats have actually been a 4 inversion for several years now.  The incentive to be a fast qualifier comes from locking the 4 (4 heat program) or 5 (3 heat program) fastest qualifiers into the dash PROVIDED THEY TRANSFER from their heat.  AND the dash (before the inversion draw) is lined up straight up by times, so if the 0 pill is pulled for the dash inversion (1 in 8 chance), the fast qualifier COULD start up front in the dash.  There was more incentive to "sandbag" when the heat inversion was 6 and only the top 2 in the heats went to the dash. (And again, in my opinion, it's nearly impossible to "sandbag" qualifying with a 4 car heat inversion and the cars as equal as they are today.)

Still not sure about that.  It always seemed that Donny knew how to make sure to qualify 16th (and therefore get Spot 1 in the invert) every damned night.

Right, and he programmed the time that he had to time in at into his traction control. Smile

Not a fan of the 5-4-3-2-1 system.  I will leave names out, as this is not personal.  In 2013, the driver that won the Outlaw points title won the title by 14 points.  This driver had 10 more quicktimes than the driver second in the season points race, or in other words, an additional 50 points earned from qualifying.  You could make a case that the driver won the title qualifying, not racing.  I'm sure I'm about to get ripped to shreds, but the numbers don't lie.

Sprint car racing is life. The rest is just details...

I need to ask because my mind is a little tired. Can somebody explain how the (8) cars qualified for the dash last night at the WoO show. I must be missing something. I've had (2) different people explain their version to me but neither of them make any sense. Johnny G.? Thanks in advance...z

z - It was a 3 heat show, so the top 5 from qualifying plus the 3 heat winners make up the 8 car dash.  In a 4 heat show it would be the top 4 qualifiers plus the 4 heat winners to make up the 8 car dash. The one caveat is that the top qualifiers also have to make the A main transfer in their heat to make the dash. All 5 did last night.
