Jeff announced that 2015 will be his last year running for a title. This will be a huge opportunity for Hendrick Motor Sports and possibly a young, upcoming star? Kind of like what he did with Jeff. Good Luck Jeff........

Might as well let Nascar screw him out of one more championship, right Maddog?

I'm surprised, yet realize that this day would come sooner rather than later (Jeff always said he wouldn't be racing when he was 50).
Some young driver (cough, cough CHASE ELLIOTT cough, cough), will have a great car and team next season and hit the ground running and contend for wins and titles.
Hopefully Jeff will get his back issues figured out and go out with another title this season.

This shows how the chase has done more harm than good overall. Without the chase ever existing you would have Jeff Gordon, more than likely a 6 time champion looking to tie Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt as the only 7time champions and i believe in a couple of instances the championship battle would have been closer under the old format versus the chase.
Instead, you now have Jimmie Johnson winning 5straight titles which hurts Nascar (not taking anything away from Jimmie, great driver, not a fan, but a great driver and will be a hall of famer) and he was not the best driver overall over those 5 seasons. He was the best over the final 10 races but not all 36. I want me champion to be the best all year, not the whole season. Big lost marketing opportunity now for Nascar because of the Chase.

I don't remember the website, but there is one out there that shows ALL of the hypothetical final season standings if there was never a Chase system put in place. According to that site, Jeff Gordon would have won his 7th championship this year under the classic points system. He is the one driver, by far, that has been hurt the most by the point system change. Jimmie Johnson, on the other hand, would have 3 championships at this point, instead of 6.
It's a very interesting website and I would recommend checking it out if you haven't seen it before. The problem is, I have no clue what the address is - help anybody?
EDIT: found the website!

Thank You....I have felt this way since the Chase started. I always said, leave it alone. If they got tired of one guy dominating the WHOLE year, then the complaining drivers should have got BETTER. Oh well, it is what it is. NASCAR lost a huge fan in me when they did that, I still watch, but haven't gone to any races. Now I'm going to go weep....

Thanks for the link, i remember looking at this last year and finding it interesting. When Johnson won his 5 straight there was no way that team was the best the whole year especially in 2010. I understand that Matt Kenseth had only 1win in 2003 and a few people cried about it and how could someone with 1 win be champion but math does not lie. He was the best driver that year by far becasue he was constantly up front. Only 1 other time and 1 more time since 2003 would someone win with only 1win.

I was aware that Jeff would have won his 7th this past year--would be going for the record this year. There is no doubt in my mind who the top 3 drivers of all time are--and Jimmie ain't one of 'em. Top 5 or 6? Sure. Championships lost a lot of luster when the Chase came around. Then, they throw this absolutely absurd format at us last year. I prayed for Kevin to blow a tire (not for his misfortune) so that Newman would win the Chase with that absolute joke of a season--just so Nascar could see how ridiculous it was. When I bring this up to some fans, they say "you didn't think that was exciting?". Yep. Just one problem. There was only one car in the final 4 that deserved to win the championship--all of the others were eliminated by dumb luck.
When I compare the top drivers of all time, I have to compare apples to apples. Dale and Petty won no gimick championships so I'm not going to count gimick championships. I'll give Jimmie 3 like he deserves and Jeff gets 7.

Guys, NASCAR is a slave to the money. They figured out that if they have "dramatic" finishes frequently, more cars on the lead lap, and a dyn-o-mite points battle at the end, they will continue to get billions of dollars in TV money. You may have hated the new Chase format, but I'll bet you tuned in out of curiosity at least.
Pure, run what you brung racing is typically bad for TV. One guy gets a technological advantage and boom, no close finishes. If it gets to boring, no one watches. Think back to mid to late 90's and early 00's for Formula One. How many of you watched those races? It made for boring TV and their American audience has usually been minimal. NASCAR figured it out pretty quick and they are rolling in the green. If you look at it from that perspective, their decisions make sense. It's all about ratings and how much money those ratings can bring.

No real argument for anything you said. However, Ryan Newman having a chance to win the championship is proof that they may have their heart and pocketbook in the right place, but common sense is not prevailing! Their system is very flawed!
