First Five NSL Drivers Announced!

Windom, MN (November 25, 2014) – The first five drivers committed to the new National Sprint League are in.  Drivers are already planning for 2015, and memberships are arriving at NSL headquarters in Minnesota.  National Sprint League members receive the benefit of insurance, reduced pit passes, contingencies and more.

Brian Brown, Danny Lasoski, Ian Madsen, Terry McCarl and Dusty Zomer are the first five drivers in the books for the National Sprint League.  The series, founded by Tod Quiring of Big Game Treestands will boast a $350,000 point fund, and a number of special purse events throughout 2015.

A look at the drivers alphabetically…

Brian Brown

Brian, who will again pilot the Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21, finished up 2014 on top at the World Finals in Charlotte with his defeat of the Outlaws.  The Grain Valley, Missouri driver’s 2014 season also included his first Knoxville Raceway 360 Nationals championship and his second win in a row at the Front Row Challenge at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa.  Brian has finished second in the Knoxville Nationals for three years straight, and has two track championships at Knoxville.

Danny Lasoski

Danny will be piloting the Big Game Treestands #2.  The “Dude” from Dover, Missouri has four Knoxville Nationals wins to his credit.  He was the 2001 World of Outlaws champion, and has wins at the Western World and California’s Gold Cup.  He is the all-time leading feature winner at the Knoxville Raceway with 100.  He is a nine-time track champion at Knoxville and a three-time Huset’s Speedway champion.  He has over 375 feature wins to his credit.

Ian Madsen

Ian just wrapped up the 2014 Knoxville Raceway track championship in the KCP Racing #18.  The St. Mary’s, New South Wales, Australia driver also picked up this year’s Capitani Classic at Knoxville.  In 2013, Ian won the $50,000 Sydney Speedway Challenge in his native Australia.  He also picked up his first career World of Outlaws win that year at the Deer Creek Speedway near Spring Valley, Minnesota.

Terry McCarl

Terry drives his own TMAC Motorsports #24.  The Altoona, Iowa driver is a seven-time Knoxville Raceway champion, and eight-time Huset’s Speedway champion, where he is the all-time leading feature winner there with 95 victories.  He has over 280 wins in his career at 62 different tracks. TMAC has won with seventeen different sanctions, including the World of Outlaws.  He has the distinction of having WoO wins at the Knoxville Raceway, Eldora Speedway in Ohio, the Tulare Thunderbowl in California, Williams Grove Speedway in Pennsylvania, Volusia Speedway in Florida and several other venues.

Dusty Zomer

Dusty will be in the seat of the Blazin’ Racin’ Buffalo Wild Wings #82 in 2015.  Pairing up with the team late in the season, he grabbed two September wins, one at the River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and the other with the IRA at the Superior Speedway in Wisconsin.  He was the Knoxville Raceway 410 Rookie of the Year in 2006, and since then has shown his versatility, qualifying for the Knoxville Nationals A main five times in four different cars.  In nine seasons, he has never missed the top ten in Knoxville Raceway points, having finished in the top five on five occasions.

Drivers are encouraged to get their memberships in as quickly as possible, as the official website for the National Sprint League is close to being launched as well!

pretty exciting line up already. I would pay to see those 5 and whoever else shows up. Hard to say who will be the 1st champion.

Yes it would be hard to pick just from those 5, hope GrandForks River cities speedway grabs a show.  I'd be glad to pay an extra $12 to $15 for it.  What a great deal for midwesterner drivers.  Mr. Quiring (spelling) definitely speaks with his pocketbook  as well as his mouth now grabbing Jackson Speedway too.  Gawd do we need a lot of people like him in love with this wild sport to open their bank accounts.

Any speculation as to who else maybe be doing the full schedule? The series is said to be able to support about 10 full-time teams. The rest of the top Knoxville guys have day jobs, so I'm wondering how many other teams could realisticly become full time race operations. Loyet, J.Johnson, J. Swindell, Herrera, C. Wood all come to mind, but I think of those guys as primarilly ASCS drivers. Who else could do it? Thoughts?

I would have to think the #13 would run this series.  I think it all depends how much the point fund pays for drivers 6-10 and beyond and how many races you have to run... 100% or 80%, etc.  I could see a guy like Lynton Jeffrey trying to do it.  Maybe Davey Heskin.  Justin Henderson.  Wayne Johnson.  Brooke Tatnell.  Would love to see Balog run this series, but considering it's not going into Wisconsin at all this is probably too much for that team.

Heard at the IRA banquet Balog wants to do NSL but has no crew that can support the schedule and he is looking for crew guys for 2015.

They may have more sign up as long as they don't schedule against other "major" events in the US.  They need to reconcider their October date against the 3 day event at Williamsgrove,Pa.

I'm willing to bet that there are more drivers excited to have a high paying event in their back yard than there are drivers disappointed that they now have to miss the National Open.

Even with the NSL coming onto the scene in 2015 it's still going to come down to how much racing car owners and sponsors are able to support.  If some are working full time they're going to have to be able to take time off to make some of these races and their help will have to be able to do the same.  The NSL is a good deal but the people backing these individual drivers will still have to take it up a notch from running weekly tracks and a few specials per season.  The five that were announced weren't really a big surprise in that they already had the funding and were racing for a living.  I think most of us would have been surprised if their names had not shown up on the list.

Tip:

If you schedule a 2 -day event at I80 or Eagle, dont do it on a Husker home game weekend. I am amazed how many times this has happened in the past 10 years with WoO or ASCS and the Sat show is a massive fan count flop. Husker games schedules are out years in advance, why even chance it? Even if we play at 11 most games because we suck, at least 70% that may have gone to the Sat race wont go that night when the Huskers played earlier that day and they dropped $200 to be there. Just avoid it is my advice unless front gate $ is of no importance. Hell, here is Husker FB schedules to the end of 2016 season.

2015 Nebraska Football Schedule Sept. 5                  BYU Sept. 12                South Alabama Sept. 19                at Miami Sept. 26                Southern Miss Oct. 3                    at Minnesota Oct. 10                  BYE Oct. 17                  Northwestern Oct. 24                  at Wisconsin Oct. 31                  Michigan State Nov. 7                   at Michigan Nov. 14                 Indiana Nov. 21                 at Penn State Nov. 28                 Iowa

2016 Nebraska Football Schedule One non-conference game TBA Sept. 3                  Fresno State Sept. 10                Tennessee Sept. 17                Wyoming Oct. 1                    at Northwestern Oct. 8                    Wisconsin Oct. 15                  BYE Oct. 22                  Minnesota Oct. 29                  at Michigan State Nov. 5                   at Indiana Nov. 12                 Michigan Nov. 19                 Penn State Nov. 26                 at Iowa

The Midwest Fall Brawl at I-80 Speedway has alredy been moved to accommodate the WoO at Cedar Lake Wi. This race was the 3rd weekend in september, now the first weekend in october. There is no other time to run it as the Jesse Hockett Memorial is the weekend before at lucas oil speedway in Missouri. These races are far enough apart that they should`nt hurt car counts either place.

You must be thinking of the Jerry Richert sr. Memorial and not the CLS WoO show.  The Outlaws have been coming to CLS late June, early July depending on how the 4th falls for decades.  This year they're running a two day WoO show in July.  The JR SR Memorial is an IRA race.  It's also on the NSL schedule but CLS just released their schedule and it only shows IRA on their version.
