The weather was perfect and so was Dale Blaney's set up for the first annual Open Wheel Championships at Atomic.

The racing was good all evening and included many breathtaking moves by the racers. The track held up well and I must say that there was plenty of water put on it to begin with. Speaking of water, Atomic's watertruck is the fastest watertruck I have ever seen! Atomic should let the watertruck driver qualify that thing!

The Charlie McCann Memorial saw 3 wide for the lead in the opening laps with Rob Chaney getting to the front and keeping it there for most of this event. However, Ian Madsen was moving up and a late yellow put him on Chaney's tail. On the restart, Madsen slid Chaney and Chaney slid Madsen. Back and forth 3 times until Madsen stayed in front the last lap to the checker. In victory lane it was revealed that Ian could take the money or start at the tail of the A-main. The crowd let out a hearty roar of approval when the Aussie said, "I will start on the tail because we didn't drive 12 hours from Iowa just to watch the A-main."  Madsen also thanked the fans, Atomic and the Renegades for putting on this event and said that the Renegades are a good group and that they are doing a good job. He also urged the fans to keep supporting this new series.

The sprint dash was good with some moving up to improve their starting spot. Jimmy Stinson won the $1,000 and was

joined on the front stretch by the 2014 Knoxille Nationals queen Miss Kemenah....after which the track announcer made fun of Jimmy's short stature and mentioned something about him having to stand on crates or phonebooks...

The 3 dashes and the McCann memorial provided plety of racing action to warm up the crowd. I was concerned the show would seem too short without qualifying and heat races, but it turned out to be just right in my opinion.

The feature started after a lengthy driver introduction and high five walk through a line of kids down onto the track and to their cars. Some fans were expressing their frustration with the extra activities that were dragging out the show, but the big money sprint A-main was done at 9:30.

The start had Stinson on the pole but he was quickly passed and fell back 3 or 4 spots. Lasoski went to the front and sped away. 5 to 10 laps in, Kemenah and Blaney exchanged slide jobs for a few laps as Dale moved up to second and then set sail after Lasoski. Well, it was just a matter of time until Dale would catch and pass the Dude and then drive away. Traffic slowed Dale down on occasion, but the Dude never seriously challenged after that. Greg Wilson was entertaining as he fought his way to third during the closing laps.

It was announced that next year's OWC at Atomic will be July 31 and August 1st. After discussing the format with the drivers and fans, it was determined that July 31would be Renegades Sprints for $5000 to win with modifieds and wingless sprints, all 3 classes to have a full show. Then Saturday would be $20,000 to win for the Renegade sprints with the modifieds on the bill as well.

Looking forward to this event next year!

When asked why they decided to make this Move now.

Those couple of laps with Madsen and Chaney swapping slide jobs/the lead were some of the best winged racing I've seen in years. Good show - racy place for sure.

Anybody know what happened to Dave Darland in the feature?  Went backwards like he dropped an anchor - Clausen too.

Found it kind of ironic that the All Star Champ won the Renegade's biggest race to date!

Why does sprintfast have such a hardon for the Renegades?  Is he going to be all over Quiring's sh** if a Big Game car runs the NSL?  Does he complain when a WRG official favors an Outlaw over a local?

Relax dude and enjoy some racing.  After reading posts as recently as a year ago about how sprint car racing was dead, it's awesome to see this many opportunities for next year.
