Podium gives Stephen Allard 2007 Silver Dollar Speedway track championship
By Gary Thomas
Chico, CA - August 18, 2007...When Stephen Allard and 1m Racing re-joined forces midway through last season, there wasn’t much certainty what would come of it. Stephen had just split ways with another team and was without a ride when former car owner Skip Jones came forth and brought the 1m Racing machine out of the cobwebs to allow SA to finish out the ‘06 Silver Dollar Speedway season.
This year newer equipment was purchased in hopes of being a serious contender for the track championship, but early on it was a bit of a slow start. In early April, however, a switch to Rocket Chassis was made and it seemed to be the spark that boosted the performance level. Then the addition of tuner Larry Shelton was the final piece to the puzzle and ever since then Stephen has had one of the fastest cars on a weekly basis.
The 34 year-old driver parlayed that into strong runs week after week and as we go into the final point race of the season, he has locked up his first career solo track championship at the Silver Dollar Speedway. Following a podium finish this past Friday night, coupled with Sean Becker’s 16th place finish, it has given Stephen enough points to have clinched the title with one race to go in the Feather Falls Casino point season. The championship is a testament to hard work and determination that the entire team has put forth all season long.
The next to last point race saw Stephen qualify second fastest out of 31 cars aboard the Johnny’s Lock & Safe, Cross Creek Trucking, Finley Farms No. 1m. A fourth place finish in the opening heat transferred him into the feature where he started from the outside of the second row. The track had become single file on the bottom, but SA gave it a hard run and was able to use the outside more than anybody early on. It was very treacherous though and he moved to the bottom during the last half of the race just like everybody else. At the checkered flag Stephen brought home a solid third place finish.
With the championship decided Stephen can go into the final race focusing on picking up his fourth win of the season. The final night of the ‘07 Feather Falls Casino point season will be this coming Friday and will pay a nice $2,500 to win with extra sponsorship money being thrown into the pile. This coming Friday will also be the final tune-up prior to the 54th annual Gold Cup Race of Champions which is coming up on September 6-8.
