Last night Shane may of drove the perfect race. After two outstanding starts that saw him move from 6th to the top 3 in just one lap (both were brought back) he settled into 5th and then mythodically (sp) picked his way to 2nd. For the next 10 laps he and Bill Rose ran side by side all the while Jimmy light was making a charge of his own. With 3 to go Shane reached lap traffic and quickly disposed of the first 2 then on the last lap came up to two cars battling blocking Shane's path to the checkered coming off of four towards the checkers Light made a last ditch effort as he and Shane dragged raced down the front strectch with Shane picking up his first win.
I have had the oppurtunity to work with a few pretty good race car drivers over the last few years but to watch Shane's growth over the last 6 weeks has been an incredible way to spend the summer. It was just 2 weeks ago Shane took the biggest ride in his life when he went 10.5 times down the backstrech at this same track. (yes it was 10 and a half times I counted) They say you don't really know till they take the big one and how they respond. Well I am glad to say he responded pretty well.
Shane has done what very few have done in a career let alone just days after turning 16 Win a pavement Midget race and a Indiana Non-Wing Sprint Car race in the same season and my guess he will find victory lane before the season is out in the Winged Car as he heads back to California tomorrow.
To top it off he is a great kid from a great family, when things were a struggle he shouldered all of the blame and after victory he took none of the credit.
Over the the last few years I have been fortunate to be standing in victory lane at some pretty big races and I can honestly say none felt any better then last night standing on the front stretch with my very best friend and his family as they celebrated the biggest win of Shane's career.
Congrats Again Shane!!!
PS this almost tops Gasoline Alley in 2000
