the track is going to see a lot of rain tonight and tomorrow night, but there should be plenty of racing on it by the time the sprint cars roll out on Thursday.

How many cars?   It will be on smaller but wide as heck 3/8 mile track.   Gonna be a fun show.

I went to see them back about 5 or 6 years ago at Farley.  Had 15 or 16 cars I believe.  Wasn't the greatest show ever but was definitely worth the drive to see some sprint cars run.  And they made the late models look like they were sitting still going through the corners

Sadly,  one of the final track appearances that Doug Wolfgang made before retiring.

Doug raced in Farley Iowa right before his wreck in downstate Illinois?   I was working at the Farley track then and do not remember that.    I do remember when Hewitt ran the UMP LM Summernationals race there....he unloaded his brand new two seater but did not fire the motor.

Egras,  the last time the Invaders raced at Farley, they were on the big half mile.    All races in Farley this year were on the 3/8 mile, including everything at the Yankee.     The LM's will look even slower than last time,  they are now IMCA spec motor late models,  but they will only be hotlapping on Thursday.

Should be a great show,  rain last night and tonight and gonna be cold......but lots of moisture + cold air means fast racecars, right?

I was not aware they cut to a 3/8 mile.  Did they redo the track or is that inner track that they added?  If my memory serves me correctly, the Invaders ran the inner-track last time and the late models ran the 1/2.  ?  Can anyone support me on this?  I am not 100% .   Sure miss the full 1/2 mile with all of the haulers in the infield.  The Yankee used to be a very, very big deal--one of the highlights of my year.  120-140 cars in 5 or 6 different classes, all running features.  Didn't get any better for non-sprint cars.

Also, I would be curious if that is true about Wolfgang running there right before his accident.  ?  Anyone?

Same track....cut off 3 & 4.  I think the Yankee is on the upswing last year and this.   No where near what it was 30 years ago, but 100 laps on.3/8 mile track will be fun

Who are the heavy hitters they have been getting lately?  I remember some big name Late Model drivers driving there through the years.  A lot of them made it to bigger, better places.

Where you from Speedbump?  I am about 1 hour and 20 minutes east of Farley, back in northwest Illinois.

When did they start racing at Farley?  Was it a fairgrounds track someone made functional?

I remember years back going to Eldon, Bloomfield, Cedar Rapids, Spencer, Boone, Stuart, Burlington, Corning, Webster City, Mt. Pleasent, maybe even Columbus Junction for Sprint Cars.

Wasn't familiar with Farley.

I was there in 1973 pit crewing for Mike Niffenegger. It was just kinda out in the middle of nowhere. Don't think it was ever a fairgrounds track.

Last time I was there was for a WoO Show, It was late 80's maybe early 90's but I remember they had a sign at the ticket booth stating Doug Wolfgang would not be there due to an Injury at another race. Nevertheless I remember the track being pretty bumpy in the corners but it was a good time (Don't even remember who won)

Farley was built back in 1969. It has always struggled and closed for the last time in 1985..  Al Freiden purchased the property in 1988 when they paved the Hawkeye downs racetrack. He spent a lot of time and effort rehabbing it, and moved his Yankee dirt track classic from Cedar Rapids to there in 1989.I worked there from 1992 to 2005.  Keith Simmons from Freeport gave up his life in north carolina building engines for SABCO and others in 2000 when Al passed away and began another string of improvements including more sweets, the palace ballroom and restaurant, and cutting turn 3 & 4 off to make a 3/8 mile inside the big half.  the race track was a cornfield in the middle of nowhere before it was built, now it is surrounded by Simons trucking and a couple of farms.

the scoop on tonight, is that we are racing. It will be a very heavy tacky track. The pit area and in field will be very very soft. Lots of mud everywhere.it really is a promoters second worst nightmare very cold damp rain in the air and we're going to have a race. If anyone makes it, find me with the black jacket on with a Smokey Yunick patch on the back

as far as drivers names in Late Models, it is no an IMCA show so you get Guss, Simpsons, Eckrichs, Kay, Aikry,DeFrance, etc.  60-80 LMs put on a good show no matter who you have, but no Big Big boys anymore

no worries about the number of support classes....most will only bring 8-12 cars.   Sport mods might get up to 20.    I will be wearing a black motorcycle jacket with "Smokey's Best Damn Garage in Town" patch on back.    Say hi!
