That is so funny. And you think that Steve and Sammy HAD personality? My God man...What are you smoking? Steve and Sammy were the absolute WORST when it came to engaging with a fan, for whatever reasons. Bad, just bad......... I did not go to see them race, and I will go when they are gone. Life will go on for the WoO
|
Steve and Sammy were not great talkers, but that has nothing to do about whats in thier hearts and mind. Talking to strangers if tuff, I do not do it well, but my wife can talk to anyone and it takes the pressure off of me. Give Steve and Sammy a break. A.J. Foyt was never a great talker, but I saw him recently in an interview on Speed Sport News and he did really well.

I think Sammy will run his own car with his motor of choice (Parker) and run tracks that he likes, next season.. Time will tell...

Um...have you even seen the crowds at most NASCAR events the last couple years. I don't know that the gigantic swathes of empty seats at most NASCAR races these days is proof positive of "putting fans in the seats." I would think the Outlaws hope to do better than to emulate the NASCAR crowd plunge of recent years.
I am not even a NASCAR "hater", but their crowds are just embarrassing when you see huge sections of stands with almost no one in them.

NASCAR has hurt its self because it is over exposed to fans. They have hours of practice and tim,e trials on TV days before a race. They have hours of talk before and after a race. Each announcver has to analize every event. There is an old saying that you want the fans to want more. If you give them all this BS they have had thier fill of it. One reason you see alot of empty seats at NASCAR events is because the tracks went on a big seat expansion program several years ago. Instead of adding say 5000 seats, they added 20,000. Bad idea. Why do sprint drivers want to go to NASCAR. The Indy 400 paid over $400,000 to the winner. It is almost unheard of a WOO driver winning that much in 80 races. Donny S. might but at only $10,000 a race it would be hard.

Bill Russell. Michael Jordan. LeBron James.
Stan M gets it.
Steve and Sammy retiring is definitely the end of an era. But hardly the demise of the sport or the WoO. 20 years from now there will be young WoO fans and their only knowledge of Steve and Sammy will be as the guys grandpa reminisces about.

Great point! Kinda like the Knoxville nats. stretches 4 nights of racing into maybe 1 or 2 nights of racing with 100 cars.Earl Baltes put 252 cars into the worlds biggest and best dirt car race the World 100 into 2 nights. I prefer the best bang for the buck and its always been the 4 crown nats, and World 100 at Eldora!

I don't think Sammy has even entertained the idea of funding his own car. He said it was the Chili Bowl only that he would race in and I believe him. Now if a good team gets in a pinch next year for some reason driver-wise and the situation was just right I could see him running some. But no way Jose on his own car.

Since everyone seems to get all warm and cozy over the dudes behind the wheel instead of the cars, youre hosed because the fake nascar money will always take our really good drivers.
Luna's Ford engine style that won 2 WoO titles and 3
Kings Royals before a weight rule against the best EVER
in their prime and now DOMINATES super dirt late model
racing is no longer allowed/wanted in a WoO sprint
car.... Was Luna a miracle worker?

More weight, more regulation, more similarity in the cars.... that will ensure plenty of thrills for years to come. Only the most average talent behind the wheel will be needed with such awesome equipment on the track!

If you lived in PA and attended weekly racing around here you would forget about the "outlaws" All the outlaws bring is a higher gate fee to pay the "sanction fee" that pads the pockets of the crooks that run the show.

Not to mention those crooked drivers who race for purses double and triple what they normally run for. Who do they think they are?

If Steve was that much of the face of the WoO, then the NST would have fared much better.

i somewhat agree but with fred brownfield' passing...
Ascot was the greatest of all time..
West Capital wasn't half bad either..
Life is good...

I attended my first WoO race in 2002 at State Fair Speedway in Sedalia, MO. Prior to this my dad and I were I-70 Speedway (local 1/2 mile asphalt track now defunct) regulars. We had seen USAC at I-70 many times before.
After that first race I was hooked. I didn't know who Steve Kinser was--or any other driver for that matter. Now we go to Knoxville several times a year including the Nationals and to the Kings Royal. (8 years straight on both). We go because of the racing and the ability to see the best drivers in the world
I like Steve and Sammy but realistically I root for the guy that is the hard charger every night--the guy who starts 5th in the feature and drives his ass off to the front. I like to see racing. That is what is so great about dirt track racing and the WoO.
As long at the WoO is the premier group of Sprint Cars I will be there.

Someone mentioned that NASCAR was supposed to die with Earnhardt. It didn't because Earnhardt wasn't bigger than the sport itself. The same is true for sprint car racing without Swindell and Kinser. Those guys are not bigger than the sport itself. If they were, then they wouldn't have been able to make their living doing it. We'll miss 'em, but life goes on....

The Woo will survive but without the heroes of today or in the past , is what they are missing . There are great drivers of today but not as it was years gone by . But the real challenge of WRG is to keep the costs down , which is not happening . More tracks all over are having car count problems and I see alot of local dirt tracks crowds declining that are having 410 and even some 360 tracks as well . It is time for the WRG to step to the plate and do something NOW not later to assure good racing , lower car costs , and keep attendance up besides there own races , as they have chosen to be industry leaders in 410 winged racing .
