Relocated to Denver in February, no 410's but a few Supers, 305's and midgets. Made it to three new tracks:
1. EL Paso County Speedway for High Plains Midgets and URSS 305 Sprints, very nice little fairground track near Calhan, Co with a rodeo arena in the infield.
2. I-25 Speedway for ERA Supermodifieds, tight, highbanked paved oval out in the desert near Pueblo. Kyle Ray FAST!!! Great conversation with HJ Evans before the races regarding the past, present and future of Supermodified racing.
3. Colorado National Speedway for ERA Supermodifieds (and figure 8 races), very nice facility near Erie, CO, fast, paved 3/8th mile oval.

My brother told me about I-25 and said that place is insanely fast in any race car..

quick, I'm in a goddamn hurry."

I live in Denver & have never been to any of those tracks. No interest in pavement racing, but I've thought about going to Calhan. How was it?

Got an invite from Maddog to visit Wilmot raceway to the "All-Stars" race. No complaints from me. Great car turnout (38-410's). Great racing. Cold beer. Great breakfast.

Three new places for me! Gas City, Terre Haute and Lincoln Park Speedway (Putnamville). Putnamville is such a neat little place! Definetely my new favorite place to watch a non-winged show!
Real race cars don't have fenders...

I feel kind of bad, you and I spoke via email earlier this year about getting to some races. The three times I have gone this year I always feel bad for not getting ahold of you but everytime we have gone we have had friends in town and it was already a big crew going.
El Paso County Speedway over in Calhan was a good experience, nice track, very nice facilities, good food, cheap beer, fast moving lines, good car counts in the midgets and 305 sprints and most importantly to me the night was organized and the racing program was timely and well ran.
If you get a chance to get over there, I would recommend it. They seem to have a good local group of midgets so it would be neat to take in a show there when the Rocky Mountain Midgets are there as well.

This year I moved from Wisconsin to California, so if added a lot of new tracks. Placerville (my favorite), Petaluma, Chico (was there for a Civil War race, AWSOME), Merced, Ocean Speedway (can't wait for this weekend), and Thunder bowl (Tulare). There are quite a few more to go, but I'll get to them.

Don't feel bad! I've been back east most of the summer visiting my 91 yr. old Mom, got to see 3 Pa. Speedweek races & Knoxville Nationals. Right now I'm in Kokomo hoping the weather clears up for Smackdown. Last nite they got in 2 heats & then it poured...... oh boy
We'll make it to Calhan one of these days

racingfish,
Over the course of about 10 years I lived both LA and Fresno.
If you can deal with the hassel of LA, you gotta get down to Ventura for either a weekly show or a USAC-CRA show. I can't believe KWS is going to run there, that's nuts. Growing up at Huset's, Ventura is the exact opposit, you can stand on the back of the bleachers and look at the ocean, the racers have to take high tide into account, you can see Palm Trees and Jim Nalor puts on a great show. Bring a coat though, when the sun goes down the ocean air is cold!!!
Perris is another track worth dealing with the LA traffic, it's great to sit in 1 or 4 and watch the Demon and Spencer just through those cars into the corner, ridiculous! Then stand in the infield at 1 and 2, watch them come out of the corner with that left front 18" off the ground. If your lucky, maybe the Ripper will saddle up a car with his kids.
If Irwindale runs a open wheel show, I would recommend checking it out as it is an amazing facility.
Santa Maria is in a beautiful area along the coast and a great weekend trip. If they get it up and running, Hanford is a cool fairground track, Bakersfield is a neat little old track with crazy concrete bleachers, The Thunderbowl is highbanked and fast and a great atmosphere, Madera is a cool fairground track and puts on good pavement midget and sprint car races and it is always cool to see the supers, unfortunately they are kind of dying, the concession stand lines there are painfully slow though. Not sure if Orange Show is running, read that they put dirt on it and are running a few shows. If they are, there again you have to deal with the LA traffic but it is a neat old fairground track with a huge old concrete grandstand. Chowchilla wasn't the nicest facility but saw a Golden State Challenge 410 show there and it was a good race. Saw a good USAC sprint and Midget show at Stockton many moons ago, was a nice tight little facility. Chico is cool and an old legendary fairground track.
Never maid it to Placerville, Petaluma, Watsonville or Merced, need to get back and check those out.

New for me this year has been Eagle NE, McCool Junction NE, Belleville KS and I76 Speedway in Ft Morgan CO.
Eagle,,,,,,should be on everyone's short list. lovely highbanked bullring with decent seating, concessions, announcers, etc. Easy to see why it is popular in a college town.
McCool.....good old fashioned high bank big half mile out in the sticks. Effecient format for USAC sprints, NASCAR LM's, Mods and something else....I forget. A nice stop on the way back to Denver just south of I80.
Belleville.....the legendary high banks may not be near as prestigous as it used to be and the car count for both Silver Crown and Midgets was extremely weak (13-15 cars each, of which 2 or 3 cars only ran a couple laps in the feature) but the action was good and overall an enjoyable weekend while visiting the Republic County Free Fair.
I76, poorly ran show, complete lack of visable safety crew or equipment, took over an hour break to let us walk amongst the vintage cars on their special night and THEN decided to water the track and run racecars around to dry out any evidence of water. Started 6 pm and left at 10:45 without seeing the RMMA, mod and sport mod features. Will go back on Legends night.
I have been kicking around the idea of going to El Paso Speedway SE of Denver tomorrow night. They have their 305 sprint Nationals tonight and tomorrow with ROcky Mountain Midgets added for tomorrow night. I have heard that they run a good efficent show so maybe I can see the midget feature I missed last weekend in Ft Morgan.

Regarding Orange Show. There were 2-3 shows on dirt, before the promoters of the newly formed URA had to pull the plug on the series. I read and heard some rumors, but I'm not familiar with the details. As usual, it boils down to money.
The track re-opened this year with an asphalt surface.

Park Jefferson Speedway-Twice- I was there to see the Isaac Schreurs victory lane, which was absolutely awesome. Comparable to the Mark Smith National Open prelim win in 2004(?) when he banged wheels with Schatz and won. The Schreurs moment was made for TV good.
Track was really racy. Kind of a big 3/8 small 4/10. Absolutely awesome the first time, still good but heavy the second. VIP experience is sweet. The place needs some improved lighting though.
Black Hills Speedway-Intersting facility. Seems to be a dry surface but probably typical west river. I thought the way cars exited turn 2 was odd. Kind of like high, low, high. Would like to go back. Great viewing for a 1/2 mile track with a great setup. Surface was the only issue.

Toccoa Speedway, Sunday, August 31, 2014 for USCS Sprint Cars. Nice little, tight and high banked clay oval in rural, wooded hills of northeast Georgia. It's weird to see the balck dirt tracks of the midwest and then the red/orange clay tracks of the southeast. USCS put on a good show and the boiled peanuts were tasty.
