Seems as of late slide jobs are about the only way guys can pass each other anymore. It used to be a tactic used by the so called dirty bastards back in the day while the so called clean racers simply waited for the pack to spread and make there move with a balls to the wall legitimate pass. These days the cars are going to fast and are to equal in my opinion for those kinda moves and the Nationals proved it. I think the guys that had wrecks this year where damn lucky to not have anymore serious injuries than they did, the cars themselves looked like they had taken a high speed tumble at Eldora which is famous for absolutley junking everything but the seat in most cases. I dont know what it is but I was ass reamed earlier this year by Bill W saying that there was more passing in 2007 opposed to the wingless era of the 80's, I talked to McCuen about it and I guess I now agree that statisticly you can fact check it and its true but how many near misses of disaster happened in 2007 and how many direct hits also were a result. Emotionally i think most would agress that 1980 had more actual passing guys had the full race to make moves, pass and most importantly put a show on as they usually stayed in a pack the whole race. These days you have a balls out fist fight for 3 laps complete with some nasty sliders and after those first 3 laps your pretty much settled in position for the remainder of the race in follow the leader fashion 5 bumpers apart. Somethin needs to be done to tighten the pack up and put the racing back in the drivers hands.

I TOTALLY AGREE. I first noticed this tendency in the early nineties. Now the slide jobs start so far down low  with so much effort and so little reward on the average. The wings created this but they keep so many alive and in the game. What to do?

Slide jobs are just a normal everyday thing in sprintcar racing. IMO the pressure to perform well for the teams sponsors has a lot to do with it, plus these guys are racers and the desire to win keeps them going.

I don't remember the "ass reaming" you speak of pizzadude, but I did see a lot of sliders during this year's Indiana Sprintweek...

When the fast way around Knoxville is the high side, like Saturday night, unfortunately, that is the nature of the beast. I think we all prefer tracks like Thursday and Friday. It was fast, but it had a top and bottom, and Shepard worked his way to the front on the bottom Thursday.

The ultimate "slide job"...

Maybe sprint car racing should adopt the same philosophy as the NFL...parity. They can hand out awards for participation...OMG!

Give me a break...retards!!!

It's called smaller wings and narrow tires.

While I agree that there have been some real BONEHEAD slide jobs coming around, all this crap about narrow tires, smaller or no wings will not change it. The fact of the matter is that in sprint car racing today there exist alot of parity and the only way to beat another guy is to do something over the edge a bit. There are alot of good drivers out there who are perfectly capable of doing this night in and night out, but the ones who aren't seem to get all the bad publicity because they took out "your guy" or destroyed alot of equipment in the process. If you want to see some of this boneheadedness come to a stop, let the drivers have a little more freedom when it comes to dealing with the ill effects of a bad slide job.......let them beat the guys ass like things used to be settled and then maybe some will think twice about a banzai move from the flagstand.

I work on the 4x car of Jan Howard who recently raced at Knoxville in both the 360 and 410 Natl's.
We race at places who mostly have the ASCS Medium right rear rule. When we bought a new RR for the WoO at Riverside in May, the first thing I can remember is people saying this harder tire was going to make the racing better. This thing felt like tack paper, super glue, anything soft or sticky you can think of.
If this is harder than what they ran before, I now know why the tire bills were so astronomical. These tires are still not hard enough, and then to see them blow apart like they did Sat night, it just amazes me. There are too many choices of compound still, and they are still way too soft. These tires are also ran at Benton Mo and Farmington Mo close to us.
Like Wngsprint50 said, no one change is going to fix everything, but it could be a start. I love all kinds of open wheel cars, winged or not, but safety has to be the first thought, and after seeing tires peel off of rims you have to wonder what is going on.

wngsprnt50, I don't see your point. If you give them a smaller surface area of wing it would be harder to get the locked down racing you see today. Narrow tires would also mean less grip and put it back in the hands of the driver again. I'm sure you are gonna see bonehead sliders but you wouldn't see as many and that's what the topic was about. At least I didn't say to put a plate on the engine for the big tracks.

Being in from Pa. my first introduction to a slider was at Williams Grove when Bobby Davis,Jr. in the Weikert Livestock 29 put a slider on Van May in the Sterner Concrete 69 between 1&2.Needless to say Davis won the race over the popular May which caused a near riot in victory lane.If memory serves me correct a victory lane photographer was hit in the head with a can of beer from the frontstretch grandstand.Since then it has become commonplace throughout all of sprint car racing.I feel that it has become a choice of who has the biggest set of balls or who has the most backup cars in your disposal as to if you lift or not when one is presented to you.If you are a low to mid level team you will probably lift and let the other driver slid you.If you are a higher buck team you will probably keep your foot in it and take your chances.I think nowadays the cars are too hooked up and something should be done with perhaps the downsizing of the top wing and smaller rear tires to makes for closer racing.Thoughts and opinions are more than welcome!

On tire rules, and potential changes....

Surely the worst thing that can be done , is making sure that Hoosier helps in the process.

Kinda like letting the wolf guard the hen house.

Of course they will always be soft, they are in business to sell tires ( not their fault, thats their job)

I Remember 1 involving Leland McSpadden & Jack Hewitt @ Eldora in the early 90's SCRA race that left McSpadden hanging in the fence in turn 1 & Hewitt tumbling down to the inside wall. It was bad looking & 1 could tell what was going to happen.

Ah ha, The Posse invented the slide job! That stands to reason since the wings were invented there too.
