Brown Wins Second Sprint Car Showdown in a Row, Schreurs, Simpson, and Songer Pick Up Feature Wins
SIOUX CENTER, IA A near capacity crowd made their way out to Sioux Speedway to see man and machine battle it out on the Sioux County dirt Wednesday, July 16. As the nightcap to the second to last day of the Sioux County Youth Fair, drivers congregated at the Sioux Center, Iowa racetrack for the 5th Annual Mouw Motor Company Sprint Car Showdown. The racing was quick and intense on the half-mile speedway all night. First on the card was the Glen’s Sport Center Hobby Stocks. Dustin Gulbrandson #6 and Drew Barglof #45 paced the field on the front row, but Jamie Songer from Ankeny, Iowa battled past Gulbrandson to gain the early lead. After putting his car out front, Songer was unchallenged and cruised to victory in car #96R. June winner Justin Luinenberg put his #17x in the runner up spot. Edgerton, Minnesota racer Trevor Holm took advantage of a late restart to move from fifth to third at the finish with the #17 car. Gulbrandson took fourth place and Barglof ended up in fifth. The second feature on the track was the Steve Brouwer Trucking B-Modifieds. Previous Sioux Speedway winners Dustin Kruse from Brandon, South Dakota and Jake Simpson from Algona, Iowa started up front and battled early for the lead. Simpson edged out in front of Kruse and settled into the lead. Several restarts saw Alec Vanden Brink and Nate Mosterd pose a challenge to the front runners, but both were involved in cautions themselves. Simpson took command with fast #5 and picked up his fifth career B-Mod win at Sioux Speedway putting him atop the winners list for the division. Tyler Johnson of Montrose, South Dakota charged from sixth to finish second. Dave Kennedy put the #00 car in the third spot. Kruse was fourth in #6, and Jim Gregoire from Ivanhoe, Minnesota was fifth in #7T. Gary Brown, Jr. tried his hardest to pick up his second Late Model Street Stock win at Sioux Speedway in as many tries. The inside line was the fast way around the track, however, and Travis Schreurs took off from the pole as the #1 car made its way around the track almost flawlessly. Dale Furby followed Schreurs in the bottom and a late restart allowed him to challenge for the lead. Furby’s nose got into the back of Schreurs going into turn one, but the #1 came out of turn two with the lead intact and just some body damage on the left rear. This did allow Gary Brown, Jr. to move into second with his #22 car. Brown hounded Schreurs and had his shot on the final restart. Brown was able to put pressure on the #1 machine and drive hard into turn one on the white flag lap under Schreurs. Brown had the advantage down the back stretch, but Schreurs was able to beat the #22 car back to the line by just a few feet to pick up the win. The Baltic, SD racer was followed by Brown of Brandon, South Dakota. Dale Furby made his first Street Stock start at Sioux Speedway since 1998 in car #15 and finished third. Corey Yeigh was fourth in #64 and John Hoing of Hartford, South Dakota finished fifth in #55.
Twenty-four JSTS Sprint Cars were on hand to battle as this event highlighted the start of the annual JSTS Speedweek tour. The field featured drivers from Iowa, South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, Illinois, Oregon, California, and Missouri including four-time Knoxville Nationals Champion Danny “The Dude” Lasoski. Lasoski’s night though would end early with mechanical issues. Roger Crockett, Brian Brown, and Seth Brahmer would pick up heat wins. Brant O’Banion won the B-Main. Fireworks lit up the sky as the JSTS Sprint Cars got ready for their main event. Once the main event started, restarts were key in the outcome. Wayne Johnson rocketed out front early in the #77x car and checked out, finding lap traffic within just a few laps. A red for a rollover by Matt Juhl in turns 1 & 2 restacked the field and Cole Wood put heavy pressure on Johnson and made his way past in the #17W car. Brian Brown followed suit in car #21. Wood’s command of the front would only last briefly. Brian Brown took advantage of another restart when Johnson had a mechanical issue with #77x and brought out a caution. Brown quickly got past the Californian, Wood, and cruised to victory winning the event for the second year in a row. Behind the Grain Valley, Missouri driver was Roger Crockett in #82 from Medford, Oregon. Third place went to local hotshoe Gregg Bakker from Sioux Falls in the #11X. Cole Wood from Auborn, California was fourth in #17W and Terry McCarl from Altoona, Iowa finished fifth in #6.
